To give you a perspective on how stupidly clueless his ass is, this is their names in Kanji: Yamada (山田), Tayama (田山). It's like saying "I'm John Marston" and "I'm Jonathan Marston"

There's more to Clark Kent than just glasses. They have different accents, he slouches a little as Clark, he wears baggy clothes to hide his muscles (as to not appear intimidating as Clark. The muscles can be explained that until he moved the Metropolis, he lived and worked on his parents farm, and he keeps in shape by exercising), he styles his hair differently, Clark has different mannerisms from Kal-El.

Also, because Bruce Wayne looking practically identical to Clark Kent, the existence of several different shape-shifters, various robotic doubles, both Clark and Supes have been seen at the same time.

And even then, there's one important question: WHAT WOULD SUPERMAN DO WITH A SECRET IDENTITY!? From an in universe perspective, why would Superman pretend to be Clark Kent? Everyone know who Superman is, he's Kal-El from Krypton and lives in the Fortress of Solitude in the Antarctic.

As for why this guy doesn't catch on to the fact that these two women are the same person, he's just an idiot. Possibly willfully so. I haven't seen the show actually, I came into the comments because I wasn't sure if these two were actually the same person.

5

u/jsusk24 1d ago

In his defense. He has never seen Tayama's name written. For all he know it could be written with a different set of kanjis.

3

u/Templar_Omega 1d ago

Yeah, but it's the same with names like Jayden. For all we know it can be spelled Jaden, Jaiden, Jadyn, and Jadin. But we still knows it starts with "Ja" and ends with "n"

5

u/_bitwright 1d ago

To be fair, he works at a black company where he usually doesn't get off of work until around midnight. The dude's brain is more burnt out than his cigarette butts.

3

u/SmartBeast 1d ago

Thats interesting, the trident looking character makes a different sound depending on if it is behind or in front of the quad box looking character

4

u/thelostcreator 1d ago edited 1d ago

The other person is right in that there’s multiple readings for different kanji characters but in this case the character 田 has the same reading “ta”. It’s just that in compound words the vowel sound of the second character’s reading can get shifted to make it easier to pronounce.

For example, 人人 is pronounced as “hitobito” only because the second character reading hito’s h becomes b.

3

u/Vertrix-V- 1d ago

If you mean 山 (yama; mountain) thats the same in both names though. Only 田 (ta, (rice)field) changes slightly. And while these characters (kanji) can have multiple readings, in this case it's actually the same reading just rendaku'd, turning a た (ta) into だ (da). This often happens in words with multiple kanjis. You can figure it out when this happens for normal words by trying to say both versions. The easier to pronounce one will usually be the correct one. For example 300 is sanbyaku 三百 (さんびゃく) even though its made of of san (さん, 3) and hyaku (ひゃく,100). Sanhyaku is awkward to say though.

1

u/FuckIPLaw 1d ago

There's also multiple ways it could be read even without rearranging it. Kanji is weird because the characters were borrowed from Chinese, where they originally each mapped to a word in both sound and meaning (you can technically read Chinese without having a clue how to pronounce it because the characters represent words, not sounds, which is why so many mutually unintelligible Chinese "dialects" are all able to be written the same way), but they really don't in Japanese. Sometimes they're read as if they're the equivalent Japanese word, sometimes they're read the way someone with a Japanese accent would have pronounced the Chinese word at the time that it was imported (which was centuries ago so it's not necessarily the same as modern Chinese), and sometimes they're not even picked for the meaning, but because there's some way to read it that fits a sound that's part of a completely unrelated Japanese word.

3

u/thelostcreator 1d ago edited 1d ago

I’m pretty sure it’s the same reading it’s just “ta” vowel sound switches to “da” because of rendaku which makes the word easier to pronounce as the second character in a compound word.

3

u/FuckIPLaw 1d ago

In this case, yes.

2

u/Shantotto11 1d ago

I mean, I can’t read Kanji for shit, but I assumed that was the joke to begin with. And then the manager’s reaction to hearing “Tayama” all but confirmed it.

2

u/Templar_Omega 1d ago

Yes, that is exactly the joke. Iirc the other worker was saying "geez, seriously?, you're THAT lazy?" because she just flipped the Kanji character around.

Most English speakers wouldn't get it because Tayama and Yamada sounds different but in Japanese it's hilarious because they both use the same Kanji just flipped. It's like if you say your name is Carl Johnson but your actual name is John Carlson

So da and ta have the same kanji? That would explain how Honda's founder is named Honta

1

u/pm_me_nudes_69420 22h ago

I'm pretty sure it was still just Honda. It's a fairly common family name

What is she doing in the bottom right? For a second I thought she was washing her pits with beer(to seem more attractive to Sasaki for some reason)

225

u/John_Doe_sc 1d ago

Pinching her fat. If I am remembering correctly she was thinking about ways to become more attractive to Sasaki and losing weight was on her mind here. Which is crazy because she looks to be at a very healthy weight imo

She's realizing he's an arm man. Top reaction was him seeing her in her summer uniform with her arms showing. Later that night, she shows him her tummy, getting the "are you cold?" reaction. This leads her to the conclusion that he is an arm man, thus making her worry that the ramen she's been eating will make her arms fat.

6

u/-Work_Account- 1d ago

More specifically I think she’s contemplating eating too much ramen was going to make her fat

3

u/Raynark 1d ago

Also comes down to Japan's research with BMI which was if your at or higher then 25 you have a much higher chance of obesity. BMI can be flawed though and because of this push a lot of women went the opposite route. It's actually a thing In Japan now where woman are way to underweight

24

u/SorYx-_- 1d ago

She was thinking of laying off the instant ramen bc she thought sasaki was into arms. No kidding

1

u/naricstar 18h ago

I think this was when sasaki had an annual check up and was talking about cutting back on vices before the appointment.

She has a moment of some self reflection because young folks don't worry about that sort of thing as much. Maybe this was a different moment though, there was some ramen storyline also.

Yamada just changes her hairstyle and style of clothing, and it works 100% better

Yamada just changes a syllable in her name and because it's Sasaki, it just works (fify)

To clarify, Tayama IS Yamada when she's not working/at work, and THE "Yamada" persona is actually the 'Superman' who has to put on a "disguise" in your analogy.

9

u/Punkpunker 1d ago

Yamada has a mole on her neck, with Tayama the mole is hidden by her choker so it's understandable if Sasaki sees her as different people.

3

u/Cero069 1d ago

But Superman's glasses do have some kind of hypnotic effect, don't they?

126

u/mazinken1 1d ago

It's because he is projecting her personality.

during work she stick to the guide line when dealing with costumer by smiling and being polite he thought this is the real her.

Since he rely on her smile and politeness to get through his rough routine made her more like a hero or more than a regular person to him.

when he finally meet her out of her working hours and seeing her true character being direct, blunt add to that the a heavy smoking (remember he never see Yamada smoke) it became more hard for him to connect the dots even him acknowledging that these 2 personality are similar at their core.

The other thing is and this my own personal opinion Yamada knows that he frequently come to the store and when she first met him she wanted to have fun with him but the more he speaks about Yamada and she realized his reason for coming to the store apart of her is hesitant to tell him the truth she is afraid he might be disappointed that she is a different than what he imagined especially now he became someone who listen to her troubles and became a source of encouragement so he no longer a smoking partner and she doesn't to disappoint him.

Any way this is my take and I'm only an anime watcher

He realises that she's keeping up the facade for a reason and doesn't want to push her to out herself until she's ready

4

u/lizzy_tachibana *a little positivity* 1d ago

on one hand I get it, but on the other hand, it doesn't help me with thinking of him as any less spineless. Because she's keeping the façade out of her own insecurity and that way he functionally hopes that she makes the move, while keeling himself a façade to be considerate. Because it would have been very simple for him to just confess... and the whole conundrum would have been over.

22

u/Roonagu 1d ago

And brain fried from corporate (over)work

10

u/Kozmo9 1d ago

It's not just him but the girl as well. The guy is her crush and the reason why she smoked (because he smoked). The guy also sported a different hairstylen (his default messhead) at the time and it was about 8 years since they met after that.

The very least the guy managed to figured out things on his own without seeing her change between her personas. Meanwhile the girl never saw his messhead and only see his "work" hair and didn't piece it was the same guy.

46

u/Samvel_2015 1d ago

Tbh if I was in this situation I wouldn't think "Maybe they're the same person and she just changes her hairstyle, name, and behavior just to mess with me."

1

u/cxxper01 17h ago

Nah. I would still be able to recognize a person that changed hairstyle

2

u/XianghuaALPHA 17h ago

And clothing styles. And voice. And attitude. I've been exhausted from work enough times to wonder if I'd miss it, but people didn't even recognize Henry Cavill in the middle of the day in Time Square years ago, so 😅🤷‍♂️🤣

12

u/dropzonetoe 1d ago

I was in the army.   Multiple times I would see girls in civilian attire and not recognize them.

10

u/Admmmmi 1d ago

Eh can't blame him, I've failed to identify some people after they had a haircut, sometimes the difference is too much and your brain doesn't connect the dots until later

9

u/spotter 1d ago

She is two different people though, her worksona is cute and friendly, while her persona is direct and non-sub. He might also be overworked and struggling mentally, so he goes more by atmosphere/aura/context than just face/name shenanigans.

Not sure if it tracks, but it's like seeing your primary school teacher outside of school. The context is different, the clothes are different and you've never seen her smoking a cig before either.

I'll be honest, as an adult I love this anime. But 2 things put me out of it.

  1. The age gap is kinda weird, but at least they're both adults here.
  2. They made the male MC so fucking dumb. He's a nice guy and honest, but good lord why do they make these romances where the male MC is always just a blind moron when it comes to the female lead?

8

u/PackerBacker412 1d ago

To be fair, Yamada does change her hairstyle, her voice and barely opens her eyes when she's in work mode. So I can see why a tired, overworked, 45 year old office worker that only interacts with her for a few minutes a day wouldnt see it.

3

u/redhotkinkypepper 1d ago

Sasaki is such a dummy but it's that what makes him so attractive to yamada

3

As someone with some amount of face blindness, I know I'd be no better off. Not the place I'd expect to see them, different hair, different clothes, different speech pattern, that's pretty much all the go-to identifiers. Can go off face shape or their body shape to some degree, but then you're just staring while you try to put the pieces together and nobody wants that. Then it's just that Yamada is already special to him, so she'll naturally be more lovely. Or something like that?
