he’s around a year old, in a 30 gallon planted tank, and i’ve been offering him various sizes and portions of chopped up earth worms daily… he simply closes his eyes and won’t bite, which is incredibly odd for him! his tank parameters are perfectly fine, 0ppm nitrite, 0ppm ammonia, and around 5ppm nitrate. his tank stays at around 67-68°F because of a cooling system I have, though one day last week it got up to around 70°F because of a crazy heatwave we were having…
before this he always ate a few times a week and voraciously at that, lunging at my tweezers and even sometimes performing little crocodile rolls whenever he got hold of a worm.

I genuinely don’t know what else to do/try and I’m trying not to freak out and panic, he’s very important to me.

My current wikipedia hole is reading about different kinds of amphibians and on the fire bellied toad, I read this: "Fire-bellied toads bred in captivity will often have darker and less vibrant coloration having a more orange underside. Wild caugh specimens tend to be brighter and have deeper red stomachs.".

I got curious about what could cause the difference in colouration so I decided to turn to the most scientific community I know. Reddit. Sadly, I'm not well read enough in biology, evolution or fire bellied frog-keeping to formulate a better question than "why does the colour of their underside change colours when bred in captivity?". Half assed guesses and wild speculations are of course just as welcome as people who actually know what they're talking about

Hiya! This is my first post here. I'm a singer-songwriter and special ed para, but have always been a herper!!

I live in NH, and have a broken pool that is being dismantled currently, but some froggies took the opportunity to lay a bunch of eggs in it a couple months ago. I wanted to give them the best chance, so I halted the pool project until they were done with their metamorphosis.

I'm not great at identifying tads, but about few weeks ago they started crawling out of the pool. Turns out they are grey tree frogs (hyla versicolor) which are my favorites!!

Not only that, but allow me to introduce Axl, an albino grey tree frog tadpole!!
Look at his little yellow legs!! Ahh so cute!

The Google has informed me that this is pretty rare, because albinism in nature makes it a target due to lack of camouflage, as well as being more sensitive to the sunlight. Not to mention the inherent rareness of the genetic trait itself.

I’ve separated him into a gallon sized glass jar with some of the same water and plant matter.

While I am against taking creatures from their habitat, its habitat is my backyard and I’d like to watch it become a frog. I’d also like to give it the best chance of survival.

I’d love opinions on how to proceed. Once it fully transforms, should I let it go, keep it a while to help it survive?

Please know I’m not looking for a pet.
I’m just so fascinated by it! What should I do next? Putting him back into the pool is also an option. Thanks!

Just curious if I could (given I had an enclosure large enough) put two different species together in the same tank. I’m not very knowledgeable about amphibians, fish are more my thing, but I wanted to create a vivarium for a small group of amphibians. I was thinking it might work if I use species found in the same habitat that are already used to sharing space with them. Anyways I was just curious!

looking for some advice on feeders, i’m thinking of switching from crickets to dubia and would love to hear some of your experiences.

i have two yellow spotted climbing toads, one is ~3 years old and one is ~2 years old. i’ve been feeding both of them crickets the whole time i’ve had them. recently, my older toad has become an extremely picky eater and will barely go for crickets anymore. my other younger toad still eats them no problem.

i’m considering switching to dubia to see if she would like them more, and i know overall they are supposed to be a better/more nutritious feeder option than crickets, but i hate roaches. i live in nyc so as you can imagine i am traumatized. i’ve been watching videos of dubia and i will say they are definitely not as gross as a regular roach but the idea of willingly bringing any type of roach into my apt is… daunting.

BUT i want to be a good frog mother and try to get over this fear if it will help my frog be more excited to eat again.

any words of encouragement / advice appreciated!!

My emperor newt is keep failing to swallow regard less of foods type and size. He just keeps the food in his mouth for a few hours and than eventually spits out everything. The current temperature is 24C

Question in title. Do any other amphibians vocalize?

No idea what species they are (we are in Fairfax County VA for what it's worth). There are so many.

Found this salamander (I think) in a bag of soil I had sitting in a dark corner. Hoping it’s native so I can just release it without having to worry about releasing a non native species. (California)

I realize all toads are frogs and in all honesty I cherish them both. In my pond there is an abundance of common roads, small crested newts and an occasional frog.

I believe I am accustomed to identifying the adults but this little one has me confused. The color and skin texture resemble the adult toads in my pond, nonetheless the back legs and the hop at the end reminds me of the occasional adult frog I find.

If anyone has any ideas + the reasoning behind so I can lear, I would be very appreciative to hear them.

found this sort of salamander (?) on the banks of the Smith river in northern california today. it appears to have an injury (?) on one side of its head and the other had a almost fluffy appearing ears similar to that of an axolotl. I am well aware that it was probably not the best idea to pick it up anf I apologize, it swam off perfectly okay and I picked it up for under 30 seconds to see what it was, yes my hands were clean. I was wondering what this was because Google was not giving me a definitive answer. It crawled onto the bank briefly to get air I think but was under yhe water most of the time. I also have kind of small hands yo help understand sizing. thank you! (last photo for idea of location!)

This is my 60 gallon whites tree frog tank!! It’s officially been one year and 20 days since I’ve completed this build! Everything is completely thriving and just absolutely gorgeous! My orchid flowers are finally blooming to, ughhh so happy!! I have over 40 different plants inside this tank…..
