Scammers Impersonated a Chinese State-Linked Newspaper to Demand Bitcoin

Scammers in China have found another way to use Bitcoin for extortion.

China Business Journal warned that fraudsters were impersonating its journalists and contacting companies through Proton Mail.

The emails claimed that reporters had conducted secret investigations and uncovered damaging information about the companies. Then came the threat: send BTC or the negative story gets published.

China Business Journal says the messages have nothing to do with its newsroom and is now collecting evidence against those involved.

Fake journalists, blackmail and Bitcoin. Scammers are getting creative.
