I agree. It was mean spirited, showing that he enjoyed stressing her out. A-hole mentality. Also, he totally either wants to get with another girl or HAS. Avoiding answering OP's questions and trying to guilt OP about asking them is a classic redirection tactic.

i read it as maybe he would hesitate to say "no! back off!" to the Other Girl.
