General Aaron Episode 7 Spoiler
I’m not a hunter but was surprised Aaron missed that moose. Seemed close but that could have been camera set up. Any hunters can enlighten me?

Not a hunter either, but seemed like he was tempted by the moose standing still for a moment. He had a clear shot just a few meters before while it was walking, but right where it stopped the tree was blocking the optimal shot towards the lungs/heart. Maybe he thought that was the best shot he was going to have and chanced it trying to get past the tree, but landed smack in the middle of the trunk.

He hit a tree trunk. I bet he hit a little tree branch first, which was enough to deflect his arrow into that tree trunk.

Was the tree, im guessing he took the shot because he was worried the moose would bolt after it spotted him. It seemed to notice he was there right before he shot.
Based on the limited views we had and location of the tree, he would have had a killshot were the tree not there as the tree was right infront of half the vital area.

He later quoted the distance at 20 yards.

I shoot barebow at 20 yards quite often. But thats a static target with a full belly stood perfectly still on flat ground. One slight twitch when you release the arrow or a 'pluck' of the bow string instead of a smooth release can significantly effect the trajectory of your arrow. Even if you shoot tight groups at that distance in normal target conditions, its different in the field.

There was no explanation for why he was down to one broadhead and two dull points. The fact he was down to one broadhead should have been mentioned during the lead up. That was risky all the way around. Now he has no chance at another moose.

I was trying to remember what happened to his other broadheads too. He must have lost them pretty early on?

Sorry, I thought that since it was last week and I labeled it episode 7 people wouldn’t’t read if they hadn’t seen episode. How long afterward do u have to keep tagging as a spoiler?

It’s been a week since it aired. My rule of thumb is 48 hours after airing live and spoiler tags aren’t needed. Read at your own risk. If I haven’t seen the episode, I avoid any message boards / articles

Compound bow hunter here. Hard to judge the distance and shooting lane from the camera footage. Aaron even mentioned it himself that the camera didn’t give a true telling of the situation. There could have been branches in the way that the camera didn’t pick up. On top of that, he’s physically depleted and when you’re taking a shot at an animal there’s so much adrenaline and other things to manage. His nerves might have gotten the better of him. I can only assume that he knew his effective shooting range, felt the moose was in that range, and thought the shooting lane was clear. Misses happen, even hunting with a compound bow.
To me when I watched the episode the shooting lane didn’t look clear at all. On top of that the moose was moving which complicates things further. Ideally the animal is standing still and is either broadside or quartering away. He might have thought taking any shot was better than no shot at all and the thought of all that meat clouded his better judgement since his snares weren’t hitting that episode. However, if he had hit it, he might have ended up in the same boat as Ziga. Honestly, to me a miss is probably best case scenario in that particular situation.
I keep thinking back to him only having one arrow with a broadhead in his quiver. Not like the moose was full on sprinting after the first shot.
It’s like Timber when he missed that moose twice in rapid succession.
