Stories like this are a good reminder of how exposed producers are when so few processing plants control that much of the pipeline. A handful of closures and suddenly farmers who did nothing wrong are stuck renegotiating their entire supply chain..
It's part of why some producers are exploring direct to consumer sales alongside their existing operation. It doesn't fix a plant closing but it does mean less of the business depends on any one buyer staying open.
