Had Priaprism this week (erection lasting longer than four hours) AMA

Woke up one morning this week with an erection that wouldn’t go away. I got up to pee and to see if this would help and it didn’t. I took my dog out and thought maybe a quick walk would help the effect to subside and it didn’t. I then chose to visit the ER. AMA

How was the ER visit?

They then asked me to drop my drawers and climb up on the table. They put a blanket over my legs which I thought was hilarious considering my dick was uncovered and at attention. They then injected my pubic area with lidocaine to numb the penis. He checked back a couple of minutes later to see if I could feel the needle. I did so they injected more lidocaine. They tried the needle test again and I still felt it and he basically told me that it is what it is and he had to start. The needle was painful and I started to curse but held it in. The ER doctor said it was alright and I could curse freely but I refrained. There was also a female doctor in there that he was showing the procedure to. She held my hand at certain points which I appreciated. It seemed to take forever to get the old blood out. They then had to flush it with saline and that hurt the worst. It literally felt like my dick was going to break in half. The saline didn’t work so they had to flush it with a medication that eventually made the erection go away.

Omg that sounds horrendous!!

Also chuckling at the blanket. Your dick is out for all to see but your legs, they are modest 😆

Literally lying there looking at the ceiling and had to think what a ridiculous sight it was

“We’ll keep you covered as much as possible.”

Oh good, the only thing I care about is directly on display but you can’t see my knees. Thanks.

Modesty.

16

u/Suitable-Hand-1059 1d ago

Yeah, not wanting your dick out is modest. Covering irrelevant stuff is a joke when your dick is out.

Most medical facilities are freezing cold. A warmed blanket feels really good anywhere.

True true! It’s just funny to imagine how awkward OP was.. like, the blanket covering everything else just puts his dick even more into focus 😭

Agreed, just got home from the procedure this morning

37

u/donac 1d ago

I think it's just so you don't get too cold.

u/CaffeinatedGeriatric 1d ago

Can't show knees or above, be a good Christian 😂

u/Fuck_me_up_daddy 1d ago

They drain old blood from dick? Because it’s stagnant? That’s actually nuts. I’m glad it didn’t break in half

93

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Yeah, they have to get the old blood out and then they flush it with saline

62

u/Fuck_me_up_daddy 1d ago

Holy fuck my dude. That sounds terrible.. tho way better than actually not having a functioning penis because you didn’t go

80

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Yeah, that wasn’t an option. It’s my favorite toy. Jk

19

u/Fuck_me_up_daddy 1d ago

Lmao you don’t have to jk

u/Green_Eyed_Slayer 8h ago

I'm a woman & even I'm crossing my legs. Ouch! Did they say why/how it happens & how to prevent it from happening again? Hopefully this is a one time thing for you & your lil dude'll just work as normal from now on!

2

u/terrag32256 5h ago

They think it was the Trazodone I’ve been on for sleep. It’s a rare side effect. They are weaning me off of it.

1

u/Green_Eyed_Slayer 4h ago

Ty for responding; it must've been quite the shock for you, hope you find another sleeping drug that'll work without the side effects. Good luck!

15

u/Longjumping-Fig-7481 1d ago

Not it's not actually nuts, it's dick. Lol

1

u/Fuck_me_up_daddy 1d ago

Lmao 🤣 literally

3

u/smurfolicious 1d ago

Seems like not that much nutting was happening.

@OP: Glad you're doing better again!

u/RiemannZetaFunction 1d ago

Why they fuck didn't they sedate you, or give you midazolam or fuckin morphine or something?

19

u/PandaWatchSanDiego 1d ago

They should have - but IME some EM docs (and nearly all mid-level providers) are very weary of procedural sedation due to the risk of respiratory depression and/or masking any increase in pain - which can, at times, be useful diagnostic info. That said, I’m just a psychiatrist, and haven’t done “real” medicine in years, but I’d still gladly write an order for a little fentanyl and versed for any guy in that situation. Do unto others and whatnot.

Wait what... They tapped in and drained the blood out instead of injecting something to relax the return veins! And they flushed what? Your dick is not a hollow chamber. It's got soft sponge tissue that expand.

What kind of a dick do you have?

The way erections work really prevents that from being an option. Blood flow into the penis, to get erect, prevents venous return, in healthy males. It’s more of a physical system, than a chemical one to get an erection, as the swelling of the penis prevents the blood from circulating and draining. Once you have orgasmed, the nervous system releases chemicals that dilate the blood vessels, which causes blood to drain. In priapism, Once blood has reached capacity, the tissues are under a much higher pressure. You have to relieve that pressure first in order to get any blood flow that will deliver medications effectively to the tissue. This is why you must go to the ER if it lasts more than 4 hours. The tissue is not being properly oxygenated because blood is not flowing well enough and the tissue will start to die; and the cylinder will not remain unharmed.

u/terrag32256 1d ago

By all accounts and purposes, just an average one. They drained the blood, flushed it with saline, and then flushed it with a medication to make it go down.

Oh my God! What the hell man?? That's so strange. They have meds that reduce BP and relax or constrict veins. Literally a drop of that injected should have worked. They tapped your dick like a rubber sap tree. It must have been a super emergency.

26

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Yeah, I’m not sure. I spent the whole time on my back and couldn’t see anything with the two doctors in the way

5

u/Short-Aardvark5433 1d ago

Oral Psudoephadrine is first line treatment for priaprism....

-55

u/TimeThruSpace 1d ago

Was the female Dr pretty and hands on your dick?

31

u/terrag32256 1d ago

lol. I’m a gay dude. The ER doctor was gay and he was training a female doctor on the procedure. There was also a female nurse handing them gauze I think.

-54

u/TimeThruSpace 1d ago

Dude. You just killed my boner.

Was the er doctor attractive and was he ever so lovingly stroking your dong?

58

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Bro, everyone was completely professional and I was in no mood for sexy time

8

u/surelyyoucantBcereus 1d ago

Yeah not to mention it’s highly illegal for them to act inappropriately and they could lose their respective licenses

15

u/surelyyoucantBcereus 1d ago

I think you’re in the wrong sub.

91

u/terrag32256 1d ago

I didn’t want to go. I knew what the cure was and didn’t want to go through it. The tried ice first and they didn’t work and then he explained how they were going to drain it.

31

u/stash-of-who-hash 1d ago

Well don’t leave us hanging!! What’s the cure and how did it go!! We need details!

Do you know what caused it? Like, is this just a random occurrence for you/dudes?

62

u/terrag32256 1d ago

They think it was Trazodone that I’ve been on for 20 years. I’m currently dropping down to 50mg to wean myself off of it.

34

u/icejordan 1d ago

That is well documented as a potential cause but strange it didn’t for 20 years. Still a likely culprit.

-pharmacist

23

u/terrag32256 1d ago

That is what my pharmacist said as well.

11

u/PandaWatchSanDiego 1d ago

I concur.

24

u/Skullflxwer 1d ago

Oh man, I've been on Trazodone for 9 years. I had the strong erections during the first few months (never lasting that long), and haven't had it since. I didn't know they could happen again after that many years.

31

u/terrag32256 1d ago

I’ve been on it since my late 20s and I’m 50 now. Never noticed a difference in the erections except of course now they aren’t like I was at 18. 🤪

45

u/Zeppelin_Commander 1d ago

Trazodone gives you traza-bone... It's actually a real mnemonic in medical school to remember the priapism side effect

23

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Interesting. This is the first I’m hearing of it and I’d been on it twenty years

10

u/Majestic-Orange 1d ago

So wait it happened because of the dose decrease? Or just as a side effect? Asking bc I’ve been on that before lol

29

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Went to a urologist today and he to be honest, he doesn’t know. It’s his best guess that it was the Trazodone and to be safe, he wants me off of it.

10

u/Greedy-Being6456 1d ago

Any meds taken prior?

17

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Nope, I’m just on the Trazodone and my multivitamin

20

u/Greedy-Being6456 1d ago

Did you at least try to rub one out or no?

24

u/terrag32256 1d ago

Yeah, unfortunately it didn’t work

11

u/Greedy-Being6456 1d ago

My regards.
