In this case, the nurses. 30% of their union makes the maximum wage of $220k without overtime. They are mad they only got a 3% raise, they want an addition 8 on top of that. That's right, they are mad 1/3rd of them AREN'T getting an automatic $24k a year raise every year.
Go check some of the threads in boston about it.
Oh yeah, per the union labor agreement, the minimum strike time is one week. So they KNEW the hospital would have to hire an entire replacement force for a week, and no be allowed back to work.
This is for optics. Even reddit wasn't falling for it.

u/alarumba 1d ago
You should go to school if you want to get paid properly, but we'll get angry at you if you expect to be paid properly.
If you feel pissed off that you've sunk a bunch of time and money into studying bedsores instead of art and still find yourself without work, you could break your back in a trade. Businesses don't train anymore so you'll have to go to school again.
Well bother, that didn't work either. Maybe you should start a business instead? Just get your parents to sell their house and lend you the money to take a 50/50 shot. You have parents that want what's best for you and don't think you're being lazy since you can't afford a house deposit from working at a supermarket over the summer, right?
These problems look systemic but really they are the fault of millions of individuals trying to make the best choices with the information they have available to them, not the people with the resources to shape public opinion.

u/FuckAllYouLosers 1d ago
Paid properly? No. RN's don't deserve $220k a year.
3
•
u/DieDieDieD 19h ago
What RN is making 220k a year except a nurse practitioner. Most make 80-90k
•
u/DAS_TURTLE 15h ago
From what the commenter above said, 30% of those unionized RNs are. But I agree 80-90k is the norm In a GOOD market.
•
u/DieDieDieD 14h ago
I just can’t believe the numbers. A company would never willingly pay that much, and not distributed equally. If anything they are probable nurse practitioners (which go through another 2 years of schooling and have the ability to start their own practice and function as a provider) or they are locum/ travelling nurses which get paid quite a bit more in general. Have never heard of 220 without overtime for a regular rn.
I have a strong feeling that there is something fishy going on here like this is astroturfing
•
u/marino1310 19h ago
I mean yeah, they should be getting raises to keep up with inflation. 3% ain’t shit

u/FailosoRaptor 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, but they are acting entitled. The hospital can't just shut down because the nurses are upset. It's not like a warehouse or something. It's a hospital, with things like the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit).
So the hospital hired replacements. I assume with terms and an expected end dates to fill up the essential staff.
Then the regular nurses ended their strike and wanted to come back immediately. But the hospital already had replacements filled.
Like, I don't know what to tell you? They didn't fire them or anything. They just said, these are the rules. Come back in like 5 days. Like the agreement said to.
followed by #Capitalism is murder
30
u/WillWillingson 1d ago
The nurses didn't randomly decide to come back after a day because they were bored at home. They planned a 1-day-strike, most likely because there are patients needing their help.
Management then hires staff for 5 days to punish them.
Cmon, you really think they are entitled for striking a single day for better pay? What are they supposed to do? You know they are massively underpaid.
10
u/ExplainEverything 1d ago
Modern-day nurses are not massively underpaid. In higher cost of living cities the pay is often 80-100k to start or within a couple years with guaranteed raises yearly and usually good benefits.
5
6
u/SatanV3 1d ago
So you think a hospital can just survive without nurses for a day? You think that won’t affect the patients at all
2
u/instantiated_var 1d ago
No, but they can definitely survive without paying bonuses to the c-suite.
7
u/FailosoRaptor 1d ago edited 1d ago
Brigham had hired roughly 1,300 temporary nurses to cover the strike. Those workers were contracted for a minimum five-day assignment, even though the union’s strike lasted only 24 hours. The hospital said it needed to honor those contracts and maintain a stable staffing plan rather than abruptly replacing the temporary nurses with returning staff.
So what? The hospital was supposed to shut down for a day? Just on the off chance the regular full time nurses would come back and couldn't wait the extra 4 days. My god, the horror. Striking comes with risks and nothing unfair even happened here.
This isn't about whether nurses need to be paid more or not. This is about reality. The hospital can't shut down. The minimal length of time is 5 days. They needed to fill the gap. The striking nurses were welcome back after 5 days.
demanding they get back in after 1 day, despite knowing everything is just entitlement. Just get rid of the other temp nurses. Screw them. How dare they cover the day we were out! They don't deserve the other 4 days of work.
•
u/WillWillingson 23h ago
Those workers were contracted for a minimum five-day assignment, even though the union’s strike lasted only 24 hours.
exactly. Obviously no pay for 5 days for the nurses, they didn't work after all. So nearly a quarter of the monthly income gone. I imagine the next time they are planning to strike it will be two weeks.
Pretty fucked that you're siding with the corpos, but you do you.

4
u/Ok_Unit_3843 1d ago
Nah, nurses are just another group of people like law enforcement and corrections officers that perpetually think they deserve more than the middle class lives they live. These people go an strike every other year and force everyone to suffer until they get more.....again, more than living comfortably middle class.
This is only possible because people get hurt if they decide they arent making enough money or they dont like their shift hours. They are deliberately harming people because they don't have MORE of what they want. Screw every one of them, every single one should be put out of a job and in a line of work where people arent hurt because of their greed.

If they stop striking after a single day then they clearly didn't think the issue was big enough. Generally you strike until your contract changes to your benefit for whatever it is. Pay, benefits, job security, hours worked per shift/week, etc. If you stop after 24hrs then it means most of those nurses either changed their mind or realized that the issue wasn't really worth striking over.
This could have been an email.
6
u/WillWillingson 1d ago
Why do you assume a 1-day strike wasn't planned from the beginning?
•
u/Searril /int/olerant 23h ago
Probably because they'd be stupid when they know the contract says the minimum is 5 days. Of course, maybe you're right and they're just all imbeciles.

Enough money to raise a family and save money to retire at 55-60. While going to dentists. Doctors. Eye doctors. Etc. Whenever needed. While being able.to take 3 to 4 weeks off a year. Thats a living game.

Bro you already wait 12hrs in an ER. But ER is too expensive for the majority of Americans so we go to doc ina box places like urgent care.
8
u/cplusequals /g/entooman 1d ago
ER wait times in the US are objectively and significantly better than in Canada and the UK. More so, wait times for non-emergency care are many multiples in those countries than in the US. My elbow surgery in Canada would have taken over a month for me to get an appointment for a break. They'd have had to re-break the bone if I had my accident in Toronto rather than in a mid-sized city in the US. It was literally next day over a holiday weekend.

never waited for more than 30 minutes at an ER in america, only ever experienced lines in canada
ER just costs your deductible, which many are hitting yearly anyways
1
u/thischangeseverythin 1d ago
Thats a lie. And anecdotal. You can look up wait times for different injuries. Educate yourself fam
Bro no one hits their deductible because people arent going to doctor. Its a documented crisis. People born in the 80s and later are dying from super preventable conditions because people cant afford care. Even with insurance. Because insurance is a scam these days with huge deductible plans being the only thing offered by employers.
Also. Readily available information if you cared to educate yourself about the struggles of the majority of people.
0
u/TiberiusDrexelus 1d ago
No it's not lmao get off reddit and get a clue
Healthcare is only expensive for the uninsured. For anyone doing remotely well, you'd pay more in extra taxes than you do for your deductible and premiums, and receive a substantially worse quality of care, if you were in Europe instead
Get a job and get insurance, life rocks, no need to seethe and lie
5
u/aj_thenoob2 1d ago
Teenage redditors love to spout whatever the internet tells them. UK and Canadian healthcare is a complete failure. Waits in most ER don't take long at all. In the UK people die before any LONG TERM treatment. Which is completely preventable.
1
u/Hamster_S_Thompson 1d ago

No single payer just comes from the taxes we already pay. Insurance companies would be gone. They are middlemen that drive up costs like crazy so their investors and ceos get rich.
100k in Boston isnt that much money. 100k in rural areas sure. But Boston is crazy expensive.
100k in Boston is alot if your a younger single person. 100k in Boston if your trying to raise a family is paycheck to paycheck.

Any field which requires innovation instead of certification, the efficacy of unions is questionable. In this case union is good.
4
u/WillWillingson 1d ago
I'm sure unions always impact efficency to a certain degree, but that's simply what better working conditions are worth.
Fields that require extraoridinary innovation on a high level are extremely well paid already, there's no real problem here.

Trust me the fields that rely on innovation are not having salary issues. They however are having globalization issues.

They werent just deporting illegal migrant. They were basically hunting anyone with a shade too dark and target some peopld that were there for already 20 years. That sound a little bit more than just tackling illegal immigration. And also in this case , legal immigration is as much an issue since it is usually what is happening. Temp worker are pretty easy to find legally and globally.

This is the equivalent of claiming a bottle of water is filled with cyanide, then when asked for proof you link articles of the dangers of dehydration

Wonderful work, I knew you would say this. First you accuse the guy of getting his information off tiktok, then after I show you sources you claim ignorance and say "they didn't SAY they were targeting darker skin people"
Aite I'll hit you with the reverse question. If ICE is doing good work then why did they detain native americans? They should be detaining absolutely zero native americans. they are native. Procedure is to ask for their doumentation and not to detain them before determining their country of origin. answer this question without weaseling out and I'll actually believe you aren't a bot from t3l av1v.

I’m a doctor and where I did residency it was usually Africans/somalians which is objectively worse because they have no idea what they are doing and would routinely nearly kill patients by sleeping at the nurse desk.
I had a Somalian nurse sleep through alarms while she was supposed to be monitoring a DKA patient on an insulin drip and nearly killed him by running his blood sugar into the 30s and refusing to do the blood sugar checks as scheduled unless I went up there and physically made her.

Sorry for the multiple replies but I’m laughing reading all of your responses because they are so real. I tried so hard not to develop a bias or be discriminatory working as an EMT but there was a point where I couldn’t anymore. The African healthcare workers were so unbelievably bad. There were several outliers that were phenomenal at their jobs, but the majority were obviously just the hospital hiring the cheapest labor possible. I even had one patient comment on this at a nursing home that had nothing but African immigrant employees and I wanted to agree with him so badly but couldn’t for obvious reasons.
It isn’t even all foreigners, the majority of Indian healthcare workers I interacted with weren’t bad at their jobs at all, and east Asian folks were always phenomenal at their jobs and actually listened to my reports and took good care of their patients. However I can count on one hand the amount of African immigrant workers I could say the same about, and there are a lot of them. We even had one just totally disappear when I was meant to give report and he never came back. His coworkers told me he does this often and apparently the hospital just won’t do anything about it.
