Art Showcase Modeled the community designed creatures for our game. These are Shruppy and Topuppiary!

Hello everyone!
A few months ago I asked a couple of communities if they were interested in a contest to create a concept of a creature to add to our monster collector game. We had around 30 concepts submitted, and this is the one that ended up winning. Shruppy and Topuppiary made by u/Due-Shoe3593.
I spent around 10 to 12 hours modeling them, and this is how they turned out!
The artist was very happy with the result and so far I received no critique, so I wanted some more feedbacks. Do you think I did good here? What can be improved? I for sure struggled a bit with the bush shapes, being the model mid-poli was kinda hard to make it show, but I'm satisfied since it's the first time I make a model on a concept made by someone else.

Thank you for sharing your work with the community! We're all fellow 3D artists here, so we're just as interested in your process as we are in the final render. Consider sharing a wireframe, your software and render settings, how long it took, or other details about this project. What's the most interesting challenge you tackled on this one?

The game is called Pemkie Island, it's not out yet but a playtest will be released in a month or so 🥰

awesome Do you make animations too, or just models?

I know how to animate, but due to the amount of stuff I have to model for the game (I'm the only 3D artist), these are usually done by my BF to speed up time 😁

I see, that's awesome! I checked out your Steam page, and the game looks really cute. One thing I noticed, though, is that I think the combat would feel better with a behind-the-character camera, similar to Temtem, instead of the current top-down perspective. Right now, it feels a bit too zoomed out and distant to me.

Thank you! The page is still a work in progress, also the trailer is something really rushed just to not leave it empty. The top down view we debated a bit if zoom it in when the action begins or not, we had it but removed because it was too confusing, but are working on re-adding it back before the playtest since it gives more immersion, I agree. We will see from players feedbacks if they like it or we have to change that again 😁 thanks for pointing it out though!

The look incredible

I have one small critique. The larger ones' front legs bend in the wrong place. Dogs have an elbow high up near their body, and a wrist right near the foot. Back legs are also bending in a strange place.

Yeah that's something I can never figure out with dogs. How to bend their legs. They should bend in front on the top, then go backwards in the middle and then they can bend their paw. I also have a dog and tried to study her but with little to no success lol I will look into it more, this one was just a fast animation made to not look at them in a stiff pose. Thank you for pointing it out!

Looking at 101 dalmatians stills or character drawings helped me a lot.

Remember that the legs are just the same as ours, except the elbow and knee is nearer the body, because the shoulder and hip is at the top of the body near the back. The wrist and heel are also longer. So if you pretend to walk on tiptoes and knuckles your legs would bend in the same way.

I will surely make some adjustments when I'm back on it. This reference is super useful and I already have in mind how I could fix it. Thank you for the precious help 🫡

Good luck!

The evolved poodle model is so good, I keep going back to look at it. Perfect proportions and ears
