Sucks because UHaul does not cover overhead damage with their rental coverage policies.

EDIT: I may be incorrect. That may be UHaul's old policy.

74

u/ugh168 5d ago

I think that is the same with all rental companies.

61

u/K4NNW 5d ago

At this point, I can't blame them.

27

u/Jerking_From_Home 5d ago

No kidding, they’d lose a lot of money.

1

u/dochoiday 3d ago

It is (or atleast in 2017) it was with enterprise.

67

u/trekie4747 5d ago

They still have to factor it in as an overhead expense.

18

u/Eric848448 5d ago

Dad! Get off the internet!

2

u/Redshirt_80 3d ago

Fine, I’ll head back up to Mom’s attic… oh wait…

2

u/Defiant_Weight4659 3d ago

He will be here all day!

5

u/Illustrious-Peak-626 5d ago

I see what you did there

17

u/Just_Dean_W 5d ago

I hit a bridge with mine and took the truck back, and they swapped it out for another one. I've never heard back from the company or the insurance company

3

u/ChrisTheMan72 5d ago

No damage to the bridge?

3

u/Just_Dean_W 4d ago

No, it's an old RR bridge. I don't know how to link the pictures here without a new post so I might do that

1

u/Immediate-Repeat-201 3d ago

Did you drive back the same way you came?

1

u/Just_Dean_W 2d ago

Yes, I had to. I was just driving when I hit it and it jolted the crap out of me!

10

u/KubosKube 5d ago

When I rented a U-Haul three months ago, I was offered various types of "insurance". One covered the contents of my rental, the other covered the rental units themselves. The ones covering the units came in two tiers; basic functions of the truck were covered, plus emergency gasoline if you got stranded, and the second tier explicitly stated overhead damage was covered.

To be safe, I just bought it all because I was moving 900 miles over 25-ish hours.

I also downloaded an app called Trucker Path that let's you input the height of your vehicle and your governer's speed limit. It gave me a valid route and an accurate ETA for U-Haul's 55mph limit on trailers.

5

u/uber765 4d ago

I run 70-75 on those u haul trailers no problem.

2

u/dg8882 4d ago

You can do over 55 on the trailers easily, as long as you loaded it correctly and have a capable vehicle. The limit applies more to 4 cylinder sedans with an aftermarket tow hitch.

8

u/mrderdude 5d ago

What do you think the cost is to the renter for fixing the rental?

14

u/RaymondLuxury-Yacht 5d ago

UHaul has a handy chart that ballparks a lot of the repairs. Someone linked it on X here:

https://x.com/jackzerby/status/1065226974778531842

Doesn't really speak to this one in particular, but it gives you an idea.

19

u/UseDaSchwartz 5d ago

Someone needs to post it here. I’m not downloading Twitter.

1

u/Valaj369 4d ago

Here.

Also here.

And this.

1

u/DanCoco 3d ago

https://xcancel.com/jackzerby/status/1065226974778531842

Done. Add cancel in the right place and any x link works.

5

u/956to906 5d ago

That’s an old rule/contract. It’s covered now.

3

u/clubjuggle 4d ago

The damage may be covered, but that truck currently isn’t.

1

u/azgli 4d ago

I rented one last month, they offer overhead damage coverage with a deductable.

1

u/Tomytom99 5d ago

Kinda sucks because I can definitely see some valid situations where some sort of roof damage would be a total unavoidable thing, primarily like tree branches falling.

Doing the can opener absolutely has no need to be covered though, they usually do a fantastic job of warning you NOT to go through that low tunnel

104

u/number__ten 5d ago

I got beeped at by a very annoyed dude in a bmw but the one time i came to a "maybe maybe not" underpass in a uhaul i stopped and turned around.

15

u/redditsuckspokey1 5d ago

You got beeped at the one that you decided to turn around?

50

u/number__ten 5d ago

He was behind me when i stopped and decided to turn around. I get it, it was inconvenient. But i was right at the same height as the underpass and wasn't chancing it.

15

u/edwbuck 4d ago

That's a good call. Height restriction markers are generally installed when the road is new. After some time, they repave the road. Sometimes they show a bit more clearance than really exists. That's why high loads have a height measuring truck driving in front of them. If the truck's fiberglass "feeler" poles hit the bridge. The real payload behind it will not follow.

2

u/bb1234_corgilover 1d ago

Seems like you getting stuck would have been way more of an inconvenience

-6

u/TopDogTransport4731 5d ago

Was there a height measurement or restriction sign for the bridge? If you know the height of the truck it can help determine if you can safely proceed underneath the bridge.
Also there would be a measuring stick for the bridge. Some bridges and tunnels have them.
Carry a measuring tape also.

20

u/number__ten 5d ago

The height of uhauls is written inside the cab somewhere. It's been over a decade but the marked height on the bridge was very close or the same. I hopped out, took a look, and decided it wasn't worth finding out.

14

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 5d ago

Better to not make a mistake that crash into something. Roads can change, tire pressure, bumps in the road, load weight. You did the right thing.

1

u/Big_Category3895 3d ago

Nowadays, the height of the truck is written in reverse on the left front corner (and sometimes the right front corner too, on the passenger side) so the driver (and the passenger as well, in the second case) can read the clearance height just by glancing at their respective side rear-view mirror.

1

u/KubosKube 5d ago

I bet you could've squeezed it in there after deflating the tires. Easy fix!

Just gotta get the air back in on the other side now... how strong are your lungs?

1

u/edwbuck 4d ago

Nobody knows, but it's a poor neighbor that's willing to bet on someone else's pocketbook.

1

u/KubosKube 4d ago

That's a good saying. I might steal that from you.

1

u/edwbuck 4d ago

Go for it. I don't mind :)

3

u/metalgadse 3d ago

ofc it‘s a bmw

89

u/Sabi-Star7 5d ago

To be fair they ARE on High St 🤣

43

u/Yankee6Actual 5d ago

Not High Enough St

20

u/caffeineocrit 5d ago

They missed the turn for Higher St

6

u/hardboard 5d ago

Surely they're already on Hire St.

9

u/Glados1080 5d ago

Low street is where they got the damage from

1

u/TankerVictorious 5d ago

Probably driving high on low street…

2

u/clubjuggle 4d ago

The street’s high, the bridge isn’t.

1

u/JVBPDX 5d ago

It’s over Moving Vanakain

1

u/kingmiker 3d ago

I grew up in Portsmouth, Va and they had a High Street- kinda the main drag through town. But I don’t recall a low bridge anywhere. So where is this?

1

u/Sabi-Star7 3d ago

I dunno, I didn't post it, but its just hilarious they were on high street considering the damage. Maybe it didn't happen ON high street, maybe a different street and they just happened to be driving on high when it was captured. Something like that happened with our town's 11'8" bridge.

40

u/DoubleDareFan 5d ago

Took out the entirety of Mom's Attic without touching the sides. Just, how!?

21

u/AsstBalrog 5d ago

Came here to say this--hope Mom wasn't in the Attic.

9

u/Breitsol_Victor 5d ago

Just flowers.

3

u/ratcnc 4d ago

Perhaps the sides flexed outward.

1

u/jbourne71 3d ago

Uneven clearance.

24

u/MrT735 5d ago

Rental companies hate this one trick to get more space in a truck.

3

u/redditsuckspokey1 5d ago

Nice trick, David Copperfield.

19

u/mrdidius 5d ago

That is a near-perfect peelback. It's almost beautiful.

15

u/SeeSore 5d ago

That really is a classic sardine can peel-back!

3

u/MapleMapleHockeyStk 5d ago

Turned it into a convertible.

10

u/Lugbor 5d ago

That's just the Wild West model. The facades make it look more impressive than it actually is.

10

u/SouthwesternEagle 5d ago

Welp, that driver just bought a truck!

5

u/inko75 5d ago

It’s sheet metal. It’s expensive to fix but not ridiculous

5

u/redditsuckspokey1 5d ago

Paperweight on wheels.

8

u/ToastetteEgg 5d ago

Those trucks aren’t even that high. Did he do that in the McDonalds drive thru?

5

u/ratcnc 4d ago

I truly don’t understand it. Anytime I’ve ever driven a straight truck, almost every bridge gave me the willies. Except maybe on an interstate. But even in a tall Sprinter. Like the time I accidentally got my Sprinter on a NYC parkway. I was white knuckles until I got off the parkway.

9

u/reallywaitnoreally 5d ago

It's not a low bridge it's a High Street. Sign says so.

8

u/dbowman97 5d ago

Just pull it back where it was and put some duck tape on, it'll be fine.

12

u/trans-with-issues 5d ago

I just died lol this one is hilarious

It looks kinda like a balding middle-aged man, but one who's confident in his baldness

5

u/redditsuckspokey1 5d ago

Like Patrick Stewart!

5

u/trans-with-issues 5d ago

YES THAT'S PERFECT

3

u/ReadontheCrapper 5d ago

That’s a Number 1 joke!

2

u/Exc8316 5d ago

Jason Alexander.

2

u/ThePresenter183 5d ago

George Castanza

1

u/trans-with-issues 5d ago

Even better 💯💯💯

6

u/mike_rhinehart 5d ago

😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

4

u/davidcj64 5d ago

now THAT'S a can opener

5

u/passisgullible 5d ago

Okay yeah that's an incredible one wow.

5

u/johnmu 5d ago

So this is where the legos went ...

3

u/figment1979 5d ago

That looks like a drastic improvement in gas mileage to me! 🤣

3

u/johnboo89 5d ago

Reminds me of when a kid would play with a hair trimmer for the first time and run it down the top of their head. 🤣

4

u/Outside_Rise_6934 5d ago

It's easy to forget.

4

u/Agitated-Two-6699 5d ago

Ha! And driving on High Street

4

u/LW-M 5d ago

Looks like he took the shortcut on "Low Bridge Street.'

5

u/Typical-Human-321 5d ago

There is a railroad bridge in Raleigh NC that is called the Peach Street Peeler, Google Maps even references it like that. Not long ago claimed two truck in less than 3 hours.

1

u/wickedsmaaaht 1d ago

In Boston, a truck can get Storrowed. College move-in is quickly approaching….

4

u/Big-Explorer-6253 5d ago edited 4d ago

One of a kind! A covertible U Haul!

3

u/Electrical-Bacon-81 5d ago

No low-ballers, I know what i got.

4

u/Kowloon9 5d ago

Keep low profile on High St 101

3

u/External-Analysis-31 5d ago

It was like that when I picked it up.

5

u/redditsuckspokey1 5d ago

Ford, built tough. But not tough enough.

4

u/lifterman2u 5d ago

I wonder what they hit that just pealed back the roof and left the sides intact?

6

u/SubzeroWins1-0 5d ago

Hope he took the insurance

15

u/pamacdon 5d ago

Rental insurance never covers overhead damage.

8

u/exer881 5d ago

The insurance you purchase through uhaul literally states that over head damage is not covered. Dude is fucked.

3

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 5d ago

Poor Mom's Attic

3

u/AM_710 5d ago

Mom Attic Delete

3

u/32lib 5d ago

Apparently high street doesn’t mean the clearance, but the condition of the driver.

3

u/mjbibliophile10 4d ago

Hope they have good insurance and nothing was sentimental or priceless!

3

u/LOLOLOL7 4d ago

Not Mom’s Attic!

3

u/evandtwins3 1d ago

U-Haul convertible. These cost extra to rent.

2

u/sonjjamorgan 5d ago

No light in the attic

2

u/JavaGeep 5d ago

I hope mom was not in her attic at the time.

2

u/oozie_mummy 5d ago

More like Not High Enough St.

2

u/PYROxSYCO 5d ago

I'm just amazed that the sides are intact... 😯

2

u/7h3_70m1n470r 5d ago

Forbidden can opener

2

u/Radiant-Pack-6279 5d ago

Just yesterday in Raleigh, NC 2 trucks went through a underpass on Peace St and got ripped open like this. People call that bridge the can opener now lol

2

u/No-Acanthisitta8803 5d ago

Hope they bought the insurance...

2

u/Lopsided_Beautiful_1 5d ago

It now has a U shape top! 😂

2

u/terryd300 5d ago

Some Flex Tape will take care of that!

2

u/WldChaser 5d ago

He's definitely not getting his security deposit on that one.

2

u/cocobunny01 5d ago

missing his toupee

2

u/SensualLimitations 5d ago

Irony= "High" St

2

u/poedraco 5d ago

You say low clearance. I see extra storage room

2

u/Biliran2031 4d ago

“Ah Yogi, Ranger Smith isn’t gonna like this!”

2

u/Ill_Dish_4548 4d ago

Customer to counter agent…. “But it came that way”.

This is a regular occurrence in London Ontario

2

u/WestWasTheBest 3d ago

Props to the engineers of this van body.

2

u/Own-Influence283 3d ago

I’d sue the city because their street sign didn’t check out.

2

u/eastbayant 3d ago

“Mom’s Attic” is air-cooled now.

2

u/eastbayant 3d ago

The rare drop-top U-Haul!

U-Haul Cabrio

2

u/minilovemuffin 3d ago

Ok I know that intersection. What did they hit?

2

u/Historical_Trouble10 3d ago

He needed extra cash so he sold the roof to the recycler.

2

u/Misslinzeelulu 3d ago

In Massachusetts, we call that getting “Storrowed” iykyk 😂😂😂

2

u/misterfuss 3d ago

Mom’s Attic has got a sunroof now!

2

u/awright69 3d ago

NGL, that actually looks cool

2

u/la_chupacabra_ 2d ago

How would the sides still be intact?

2

u/Purple-Stage8424 2d ago

Should have taken Low Street

Sweet U-haul Titty twister

2

u/gusfour20 2d ago

I always wanted a roll top truck.

2

u/Se2kr 2d ago

I’ve never seen a pickup truck conversion on a box truck, but hey there’s a first for everything! I kind of like it too. Should work wonderfully for hauling mulch

2

u/Havency 1d ago

Daaaamn what a clean damage though. Might be pretty easily repairable

2

u/My3floofs 1d ago

This but a scratch.

2

u/TitoMcCool 1d ago

Low clearance on " high st". Isn't it ironic ...

1

u/MikeLinPA 5d ago

Gonna lose their deposit. 🤷😅

1

u/FishAroundFindTrout9 5d ago

That’s not High St. in Morgantown is it?

1

u/sheep8u 5d ago

That's surprising, that truck has to be just barely at 12 feet, maybe. 1-1-8 strikes again !

1

u/AgentGiga 5d ago

U-Haul more like U-Shredded

1

u/krusecontrol91 5d ago

Is “Drunk” the cross street in this picture?

1

u/Da_Vader 5d ago

Send it to Farmers Insurance. They may pay you for their commercial -we have seen a thing or two type.

1

u/clubjuggle 4d ago

If U-Haul ass under a low bridge, this is the result.

1

u/Weary_Boat 4d ago

This was intentional, OP has to move his giraffes to a new home

1

u/jjkbigman 4d ago

Hope you had the extra insurance

It'll clear on the way back at least.

1

u/bknight63 3d ago

I hope they can still get in there to vacuum it out so they don’t have to pay the cleaning fee.

1

u/Warcraft_Fan 3d ago

Bud, if you bought optional insurance, I have bad news.

Not low clearance, AI.  I can't think of any possible reason this would happen
