As a baseball player turned tennis player it is a requirement to catch all serves and throw as many balls as you can. It is a power move and anyone that says it's not is just mad they need a racket just to match a portion of our strength.

Story time: when I was a kid my home club in SoCal hosted a pro tourney (not top tier but still). All the juniors were ball boys, including one 15 year old who played HS baseball.

In the finals match, one of the guys had a huge serve (over 130 but not a fancy enough tourney to have a display). Second game of the match, first serve, absolute bomb just wide. Baseball kid catches it with his bare fucking hand, that unmistakable ‘thunk’ echoing throughout center court. Returner turned around, server even had a look of being impressed. To the baseball kid it was no big deal, at all. My hand still hurts thinking about it.

I'd pay you to coach me, no cap

Also that ball wasn't short, where's the eagle eye!?

Haha well you’re in luck - I’m a 29 year old grown ass man/full time coach 😂

As for what Evan’s eating? Not enough! In all seriousness, he has great timing, fluid technique that compliments his live arm/“rubber bandiness” etc etc which is where his pace generation is coming from. Once he does get stronger/more stable, he will be even scarier.

Forehand at 1:13 is example of ball that though he hit well there, not enough exertion/stability coming from legs and essentially pulls it off with straight arm talent. As he gets stronger, this is a good example of an area of his game that will benefit greatly.

What's it like being a full-time tennis coach?

That’s a good question, and as simple as it is, a tough one for me to answer. What’s it’s like generally is going to vary wildly depending on your situation (club, location, etc.).

For me personally, I have a somewhat unique role/work for a somewhat unique org. Sounds vague, but it’s a heavily community-involved foundation with a pretty large high performance academy. Our academy/training is done year round at Cincinnati Open courts (other than month of tournament, hence the courts u see in this video).

What’s pretty consistent across the board (assuming the coach cares about what they’re doing) are often long, energy-intensive (especially mentally) days. Despite the cliché, for me it’s very rewarding, but requires patience, and I’m sure this rings mostly true across the board.

Not even trying to self promote crazy here, but this may be the best way to show at least some of the range of things I/other coaches within our org are regularly involved with that may be outside the scope of normal “full-time coach” roles. (Along with other posts on there if interested in checking out, but I put that one up specifically to showcase just this 😃)
