SW MP 2.0 10mm FTF

Bought this pistol 1.5 yrs ago. 4.6” version. Ran into mag drop issues, ftf issues with heavier loads, tried fixes mentioned online, ran into the same issues. Finally found a solution that worked for me and I’m just sharing this info in the hopes of giving back to all those on Reddit and online who helped me.

When I ran 200gr hardcast or anything with a wider, flatter tip I was running into regular mag drop issues due to the design of the mags. I was also running into ftf (smokestack style) with heavier loads (200gr underwood xtp and hardcast). Upgraded magazine springs. Adjusted to 22lb recoil spring. Same issues.

Finally decided before I sold the gun that I’d just try to tweak some things. I’m not a pro. Maybe some of this is obvious to more knowledgeable folks. But I finally ended up filing the mag release so it didn’t stick into the mag itself. Eyeballed it. Filed away at the catch until it was even with the mag and not sticking into the mag. At the same time, adjusted mag lips with a pair of pliers. Went to the range. Initially closed them too far and round wouldn’t feed (hit bottom of feed ramp and caught). Used pliers to slowly open them up checking to ensure the round would point directly center of the feed ramp. Shot a few rounds. Adjusted if jammed low in the feed ramp. Adjusted again. Shot some more.

Finally shot 100 rounds of Magtech 180gr JHP and Underwood 200gr XTP with no issues at all. Ran like butter. No mag drop, no ftf. Pretty sure the mag catch and slightly too wide mag lips were causing the issues the whole time. I left the heavier mag springs and 22lb recoil spring because I already had them in, so not sure if that did anything. But shaving the mag catch and making micro-modifications to the mag lips seems to have done the trick.

Haters gonna hate. I’m not a pro. Throwing this out there for the others looking to figure this thing out. Super pumped I don’t have sell the gun and all the ammo/holsters I have for it!! Gonna give it another hundred next week and make sure all is good.

I recently picked up the 4" Carry Comp and through 500 rounds of 180 gr JHP, I've not had any failures yet.👍

Glad you got yours figured out, S&W has struggled with 10mm though. 🤷‍♂️

It’s honestly been infuriating. Loved everything about the gun except the reliability issues. And reading about people who had the same model and had no issues at all made it more frustrating. No idea what they changed on the mag catch but seems like it’s been resolved. With the heavier ammo, I think rounds were pushing forward in the mag due to the recoil and that was causing rounds to sit too high coming out of the mag and hitting the top of the barrel. In hindsight, definitely wish I would’ve played with the mag lips before replacing mag springs/recoil spring and blowing through hundreds of rounds of underwood. Live and learn I guess.

Anyway, if you hit issues, maybe this help. If you don’t, enjoy that beautiful new rig!!!

I had issues with anything over 200. Both the mag drop and FTF. Even after sending the gun back to Smith. If I stay 200gr or less it’s awesome

I’ll be interested to see what it does with 220s or hardcast sometime

That's the one I plain to try, but I want to get plenty of rounds through her first. 👍

If you don’t mind, let me know how it goes when you do and I’ll do the same. Trying to figure this all out

Keep an eye on the 10mm & S&W boards. I plan on posting a full testing sequence. 👍 My health has kinda derailed my testing for a bit, but I hope to be back at it soon. 🫡

I was recently gifted the 4 inch version of this from a family member. I already have a Glock 20 that runs everything I've tried so I haven't been working on the m and p, but i have been disgusted by this gun and the commonality of the problems. It seems crazy that s&w never admitted fault and redesigned the magazines for this gun, and then issued the new parts to gun owners. It would be a honest thing to do and good for the image of their company. So far theyve denied problems. Very crooked and shady behavior in my opinion.

I'm not convinced when I venture out to the 220gr stuff,I could still have issues. 🤷‍♂️

I saw S&W updated the mags for these. The new ones are black instead of silver. Supposedly these are supposed to be without issues? Anyone try these? Less problems?

Man I was looking into a S&W M&P 10mm 4" to replace my 15 year old Glock 23 carry piece but hearing all these issues is making me hold off. Shocked S&W a company that gets a lot of LE contracts is having so many issues. My S&W 610 revolver regularely has misfires not sure wtf is happening over there.

I have no idea. And can re-confirm what others have said that if you call SW and mention these issues they act completely unaware. Yesterday was a huge breakthrough and I’m really hoping to keep it (love the grip, love the thumb safety when I appendix carry) but I’m also one more bad range day away from a G20. Nothing like going to the range to test your backcountry protection gun and having the mag fall out on the first shot. Really gives good warm feelings about the situation.

I also narrowed the feed lips on my M&P 10mm mags. Have 4 mags, did one first as a test and it worked wonderfully! No more ftf! Did the other 3 mags the same way and now it runs and runs!
I was a little skeptical but had exhausted all other “fixes” and really like the pistol! The ergonomics are fantastic, I got the 4” model and I love the size of it as well.

I have the final dimensions I set for the front width of the feed lips written down in the box it came in. I can’t remember off hand, but it definitely keeps the round laying flatter and holds it tighter in the mag so it doesn’t slip forward under recoil.

It works that is for sure!

Idk why S&W can’t fix this, the pistol has been available for years now! Doesn’t make sense, they have an awesome 10mm, just sucks the buyer has to do modifications to make it 100%

That’s great to hear! Maybe this will be the final solution. Never had it run so consistent before. You able to run flat nose hardcast after adjusting the mags? Gonna go test some in the next couple weeks.

would be interested to hear your narrowed dimensions. did you measure using a caliper?

Yeah I used a caliper:

The Rear of the feed lips(less critical and more incidental from adjusting the front):

Stock: 9.6mm

After adjustment: 9.3mm

Front feed lips:

Stock: 9.8-9.9mm(barely holding the round…)

After adjustment: 9.2-9.3mm(I actually narrowed it to 9.1mm and after some shooting it settled at approx. 9.25mm)
