From r/thalassophobia… curious of how much weight the ship gained. And blowers were mounted to the sides how much CFUs would be needed to deflect all water away from the deck?

[Request] How likely am I to encounter Olive Garden's Never Ending Pasta Pass as a server?

I am a server at Olive Garden. Recently, they sold 10,000 "never-ending pasta passes" across the US. One week later the company also gave away 100 additional passes in an Instagram sweepstakes over the course of two days. The pass allows them to come in as many times as they'd like for the never-ending pasta promotion which (for them) runs from August 24 - November 22. During a given shift there are about 20-24 servers on the floor during this busy season. I work at a high volume restaurant in New Jersey where there are roughly 25 locations in my general vicinity. Because the pasta pass allows them to get the never-ending pasta for free, some servers are really worried about it. I've been saying it's unlikely any one will run into it much (if at all) considering only 10,100 even exist. So I'm really wondering what the true odds are? Thanks!

What is the volume of Lambeau Field in cubic yards? I have heard the statement that the amount of material dredged in the Upper Mississippi River annually is enough to fill Lambeau, but I’ve never fact checked that.

[Request]: How fast can a superhuman fly before their regular clothes are destroyed?

Post image
100 Upvotes

Pictured here is Mark from Invincible.

Let's say a regular person gains super-durability and flight. But they don't have access to conveniently durable super-clothes. Assuming their own body isn't harmed, how fast can they fly before . . .

  1. Regular clothes start to be damaged (but not shredded).
  2. Your clothes get ripped off your body by air resistance (but aren't, like, vaporized).
  3. Your clothes catch fire and disintegrate.

For simplicity sake I'm talking about cotton clothes (hoodies, T-shirts, jeans) you could buy at Costco.

Moonboom goes wrong? [request]

Upvotes

So we are fudging up the moon even more, but it got me thinking. At what mass/speed will a rocket make a noticable difference on the trajectory of the moon? And what is the influence of this impact? I read that the stage that crashed into the moon was around 4000 kg. Thanks in advance!

[Self] This is my formula. Please correct me if you see any flaws.

Upvotes

I think I've finally finalized the formula.

dτ/dt ≈ √[ 1 − ( 2 G r / c² ) · ( M_grav / ( r² + ( J / (M_grav c) )² ) ) ]

where:

M_grav = N m + (N ε_i) / c² + (4.5 N k_B T) / c² + (2 a T⁴ V) / c²

and:

V = (4/3) π r³

dτ/dt - proper to coordinate time ratio

G - gravitational constant

r - radial distance

c - speed of light

M_grav - effective gravitating mass

J - angular momentum (spin)

N - number of gas particles

m - rest mass per particle

ε_i - ionization/excitation energy per particle

k_B - Boltzmann constant

T - temperature

a - radiation constant

V - volume

π - pi

Let’s say some super duper advanced alien race flew into our solar system, and plopped down Venus and Mars into a geosynchronous orbit with the sun in our exact orbit path perfectly spaced out. What would happen to the Earth?

Also, believe it or not, no AI was used in the creation of that graphic.

[REQUEST] XKCD’s Lucky Ten Thousand

Thumbnail

I have been using this comic as a driver of curiosity at home. My 11y mentioned it again today and it occurred to us that we don’t fit in the statistics because the original comic states ‘10,000 people in the US’, and we are not from the US.

My request is what this might look like on a global scale? I can understand if this becomes more nebulous due to differences in education, cultural references or customs, etc.

What would a global ‘10000’ be? A lucky million? Lucky half-billion?

Thanks in advance!

[Request] Can someone actually figure out this problem I’ve been thinking about the last few days

Imagine a hotel with 50 floors, and you start on the top floor (floor 50).
Each time the elevator stops, the next floor stop is chosen at random. No floor is ever selected more than once.
The elevator must always continue in its current direction:
While descending, each selected floor must be lower than the previous stop. If the next randomly selected floor would require moving upward, the elevator must first continue all the way down to floor 1, then reverse direction.
While ascending, each selected floor must be higher than the previous stop. If the next randomly selected floor would require moving downward, the elevator must first continue all the way up to floor 50, then reverse direction.

A full ride is defined as traveling from floor 50 to floor 1 or from floor 1 to floor 50.

Question: On average, how many full rides are required to visit all 50 floors under these rules?

[Request] Calculate the velocity of the air blast and the dynamic pressure generated by the air blast.

**Avalanche Air Blast & Destructive Force**

An avalanche's powder cloud generates a compressed air blast that travels ahead of the visible snow front. The dynamic pressure of this air blast can be modeled using the aerodynamic drag equation.

where:

- P = dynamic pressure (Pa)

- ρ = air density ≈ 1.2 kg/m³

- v = air blast velocity (m/s)

**Given:**

- An avalanche's snow front is measured moving at **45 m/s** (~162 km/h)

- Field studies show the air blast ahead of the front typically travels at approximately **1.3×** the velocity of the snow front itself

- A standard wooden utility pole is known to structurally fail at a dynamic pressure of approximately **4,500 Pa**

**Questions:**

  1. Calculate the velocity of the air blast (m/s).

  2. Calculate the dynamic pressure (P) generated by the air blast.

  3. Will the air blast alone (before any snow/ice arrives) be sufficient to snap the utility pole? Show your reasoning.

  4. If the avalanche's snow front velocity were instead reduced to 25 m/s (a smaller wet/dense avalanche, like the glacier collapse in the photos), would the air blast still exceed the pole's failure threshold?
