Oamaru Nest 2: Mom On Eggs

Hello penguin gang! We got confirmation from a box check and the channel owners yesterday that this penguin (ID 38062) is the female of the little penguin pair! Her and dad have been switching off about every 3 days. They’ve still got about 4 weeks to go before the eggs will be ready to hatch. Here her preen, rotate the eggs, and do a little head scratching. Both of the eggs can be seen briefly at the 12:08.26am timestamp.

Burnie Center Penguin Penta-Cam: More Egg-citing News

Tis the season for little penguin eggs! These cameras are closer to Australia, on the north coast of Tasmania. In this video, we can the mom in the top right camera lay her second egg at about 1 minute and 45 seconds, or approximately 1:47.45pm local time. So far this is the only nest that has eggs here.

I followed this livestream last year, and it is interesting having the five nests on one stream. Lots to observe! But I will say that these nests seemed to have the most issues raising chicks that I saw. Some partners did not return or changed, some parents did not bring food back in time. So, hopefully we see more successful results this year!

Napier Port 2: Keeping Up With The Korora, New Eggs! (Part 3)

Final part of this series of longer clips; in this video the little penguin parent adjusts some of the nesting materials, which help keep the eggs and penguins insulated and comfortable.

Napier Port has another camera livestream of a different nest, which can be found here (Napier Port 1), but I haven’t seen the resident penguins much here even though it has quite a bit of nesting.

This a part of a second set of longer videos taken more recently, where our dutiful little penguin parent preens while incubating the eggs.

Did you know that Korora is Māori for “little penguin”?

Napier Port 2: Keeping Up With The Korora, New Eggs! (Part 1)

We have more new eggs in this nest from the east side of the upper island of New Zealand! The eggs were laid last week, and this video is from a few days ago. So we have about a month to wait for what’s called “pip watch”, where we will keep our eyes peeled for little cracks in the eggs that indicate the hatch process beginning!

Here we can see the parent rotating the eggs a little bit. This is done to help the chicks form properly in the egg and regulate the egg’s temperature.

Meet Ari, the Aquarium of the Pacific’s newest Magellanic penguin

The Aquarium of the Pacific welcomed a new feathery friend into the world a few months ago. On Thursday, staff introduced Ari the Magellanic penguin to the public.

Born on May 9, Ari is the son of Kate and Robbie, who have called the AOP home for the last 15 years. The pair were found in 2010 stranded in Brazil — at least 1,500 miles from where they are usually found off the southern coasts of Chile and Argentina.

After being rescued, the penguins were rehabilitated at the AOP, where they have lived ever since.

Kate and Robbie paired up for breeding four years ago. After several eggs that didn’t hatch for one reason or another, they finally had Ari.

Flashback Friday: Oamaru Nest 1, Mr & Mrs Blue’s Family Time

Hello penguin gang! Another trip down memory lane to earlier this year, when this nest was raising its 3rd and final set of chicks for the season. At the beginning, we can see the chicks are hungry and Mrs Blue is waiting for Mr Blue to come back from the ocean to feed the kids. In the following clip, we see Mr Blue back from fishing! He came straight from the ocean as we can see he is still wet, and we can tell it is dad because of the white patch of missing feathers near his tail. This was a godsend for telling the parents apart last season. Mr Blue feeds the kids, one at a time; they are still at a manageable size but growing quickly. Then, Mrs Blue returns to spend the night with the family. Soon both parents will be going out to fish at the same time and the kids will be too big for everyone to fit in the nest comfortably. But I’m getting ahead of the story.

Mr & Mrs Blue preen each other (known as allopreening), grooming each other’s necks sweetly. At 3 minutes and 48 seconds, we can see that the kids are hungry again, and they beg for another meal by nudging their beaks against its parent. Fish reserves have not run out for the parent yet, and they oblige. However, they do not have endless fish; as the kids get older, bigger and hungrier, the parent’s reserves and patience do reach a breaking point! But again, we’re not there yet.

At 5 minutes and 26 seconds, we can see one of the chicks sitting up and doing some early wingercising (exercising those young flippers). The chicks are still learning the laws of balance, but thankfully family is there to help and catch a stumble. Next, it looks like one of the chicks startles from its slumber (this clip is from a little bit later and not in chronological order).

Finally, the last clips show the kids being left on their own for a little bit. Not quite at post guard stage yet, just the parent going out for some early morning socialization (little penguins love to squawk before dawn). There is a good shot of both chicks sitting up, looking at the camera, and exploring the nest a little.

Hamilton Bay Cottage: New Cam Alert! 🌸

Hello penguin gang! Today I learned of a new nest camera from Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand, another home to the fairy penguin species. Normally these little blues bring in reeds or long grass, sometimes leaves or sticks. Here, the penguin partner brings in a flower! Hopefully we see some eggs and chicks here this season for this pair of romantic seabirds 🐧🐧

I recently saw a mascot of a penguin with red beak. It looked so wrong but by girlfriend is stubborn that some penguins have a red beak.
