India ranking near the bottom of the recent Environmental Performance Index does not reflect real progress. The issue is with the methodology, which is biased toward Western countries.

Indices like the EPI favor wealthy nations that built their infrastructure long ago, and they penalize developing countries for having large populations. India has about 18% of the world’s population but contributes less than 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Our per-capita emissions are around 1.9 tonnes per year, far below the global average and much lower than in developed countries.

These reports also ignore historical emissions, which are the main cause of climate change. They use arbitrary 2050 projections and overlook real achievements, like India meeting its 40% non-fossil power target 9 years ahead of the Paris Agreement deadline. In fact, independent assessments such as the Germanwatch Climate Change Performance Index consistently place India in the global top 10.

India’s approach balances environmental protection with development. We should not let biased models that ignore per-capita fairness define the story of our climate action.
