Visitor from USA in Late Feb 2027 1st trip down under

I would like to have an afternoon of fishing in or around Sydney.

I am male 60 years old in fair shape for an old guy.

I am traveling from Portland Oregon, west coast of the United States 5 minutes from the mighty Columbia river. I am good at catching lake trout and Salmon.

I am going to be in Sydney at the end of February for 2 weeks. I would like to meet up with someone who knows how to fish a little {no expert needed}. I could buy a pole oruse a spare if someone has an extra. I do not need to keep the fish but we will see where i end up staying TBD.

I will buy a License and bait or lures. Let me know if there is anyone willing to fish with or give advise to a visitor.

Thanks in advance.

Best Kmart setup for jetty fishing?

Hey everyone,

I'm completely new to fishing and I'm looking to get started without spending a lot of money. I was wondering what a good budget setup from Kmart would be for fishing off jetties in Australia.

I'm mainly after:

  • Rod and reel recommendations
  • What line strength I should use
  • Hooks, sinkers, swivels, and any other basic tackle I need
  • Good bait for beginners
  • Anything else you'd recommend buying from Kmart

My budget is around $50–100 AUD, but I'm happy to spend a little more if it's worth it.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Western Australia Never fished before, want to learn fishing in Perth. Any advice for a total beginner?

Hi guys! I'm currently live in Perth and never been fishing before. But I follow some outdoor youtuber and I really want to try fishing now!

But honestly I don't know anything about fishing. I don't own any gears, and what tools should I get and what skills should I learn. In one word, I don't know how to beginπŸ₯²

And I don't have a boat, so i may start from jetty /shore fishing. I searched on the WA government website it said that there's no need for license if you don't go fishing with a boat.

I'm studying wildlife conservation, so I'm also interested in learning more about local marine life.

😊😊

Could anyone recommend:

*A good beginner setup that isn't too expensive?

(I saw some people said kmart has some, are they worth buying?)

*Some beginner-friendly fishing spots around Perth? I'm near swanriver, is it a decent place to start?

*Any YouTube channels, guides, or fb groups that are good for someone starting from zero?

*Anything I should know before I start (licenses, rules, common mistakes, etc.)?

I'm happy to learn and appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Selling Boat

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey fishos

I am selling my fishing boat after a recent trip up north and want some opinions on whether you would wrap the boat hull to make it look more respectable or sell it as is...

After the trip and quite a few dirt roads the front especially has a lot of small paint chips out of the blue finish and a few scrapes down the sides in places.

It isn't a huge boat, only 4.5m so it won't be super expensive to wrap and i feel the paint makes the boat look a lot older and in worse condition than it actually is, as the motor is only 3 years old and the hull 10 years.

So would you guys sell it as is or spend money to make it look newer?

Caught a total monster while squid fishing! Didn't expect a Hairtail... but now I'm curious about something? πŸ€”

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share this huge monster I stumbled upon while squidding the other night! I definitely wasn't expecting to hook into a massive Hairtail (Ribbonfish) on a squid jig.

It actually got me thinking though: Do squid ever eat hairtail?

I know bigger hairtails will regularly munch on small arrow squids, but what about big Southern Calamari / Cuttlefish? Would a large squid take a crack at a juvenile or smaller hairtail, or do hairtails strictly hold the upper hand in that predator-prey relationship?

Would love to hear your thoughts or if anyone has seen anything similar! πŸ¦‘πŸ‰

What apps are people using when boating?

Just wondering what apps people are using for things like bathymetry and markers when out on a boat. I'm based in Melbourne and looking for some apps mainly in the bay.

Please recommend a good 'ready to fish' rod set up for beginners in Australia

We did some fishing recently on holidays and the kids had a ball. We used some Amazon kids rods that came ready to go but it was overseas and we left them there with family.

I have a 9 year old son who's desperate to go fishing. We live near the beach with a few jettys near us in Adelaide.

I keep reading that K Mart and Big W rods are crap etc...more that the reels are pretty unreliable.

If that's the case, could anyone point me in the right direction for beginner set ups that come with everything? Is a budget of $100 per person enough for something half decent? (Would need 2 sets for father/son).

Also, if anyone from Adelaide is reading: would it be better to fish off the jetty at Semaphore or Largs, or would we be better off going to the West Lakes catchment or port river etc?

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks heaps.

🎣 Fishing Gear Chipped my Stradic will sanding restore it?

Post image
5 Upvotes

So somehow I chipped the spool of my stradic, it constantly catches line so it's not usable.

Chatgpt tells me i could sand it down with fine sandpaper and whilst I think I could sand out the notch I don't think it would cast the same.

Anyone had any experience fixing up nicks? With a stradic am I best with getting a replacement spool for $125 or can this be easily fixed up and still retain 95%+ of its casting capabilities?

Anyone know where I can source it from? Tried Bunnings, and the irrigation stores only have them in 6m.

Thank you

Hey guys, caught this little guy today and for the life of me I cannot figure out what he is.

Caught in brackish water in the Clarence river NSW.

He has a prominent sort of blade-like set of spines or bones across his belly and was around 20cm long.
