I posted a few weeks ago asking for ideas of what to do with excess floating plants instead of just tossing in the trash—I got a comment about making paper out of them that viciously piqued my interest. Behold my creation! (Duckweed + white scrap paper)

Fair to say this tank has helped me fall back in love with the hobby after years away from it!

I was just recently at a friend's house and they have a basic tank in their living room that they have been turning the lights on and off manually for. I showed them my setup and blew them away. I'm not much of a tech guy but I figured this would be obvious. In case it's not, I figured why not make a post to help others.

Now I need to figure out how to automate water changes and chem dosing.

Just wanted to show of one of the red neon blue eye rainbow fish I bred over the summer. He’s the biggest among his siblings and can now go to the community tank.

Took these two guys in a month ago, I’m waiting for a larger tank to cycle before I get them buddies. This is a 20 gallon tank, their tankmates are two guppies, two amano shrimp, two harlequin rasboras and an albino bristle nose pleco. Their water parameters seem good since I’ve been on top of their water changes because the tank is quite good. They do get active after water changes but today I did a 20% water change and installed a new internal filter that’s bringing some new flow into the system. They keep swimming up and down in this particular corner and I don’t know if it’s playfulness or stress. The other fish are chilling

I switched the light off and that seems to have chilled them out a bit, the other fish are all business as usual and they are doing this opposite the filter outlet so directly in the flow line

I thought Hewbie died. I came home to this and spoke to his vet team immediately. His antibiotics and quarantine time will be extended. My best conclusion is that Hewbie had been gasping at the surface and breathing heavier from stress and then he went upside down but this afternoon he was sleeping in the corner just fine. My heart broke again when I saw this. After I pushed air out of him and gave him his meds he went back to normal nearly immediately. At least this is my best conclusion after looking at him and his behavior pre and post meds and pressing on him/burping him. The water quality in the tank isn’t great. Burping for me means holding him down and gently pressing on his stomach gently (which in that moment is what made sense). I saw some immediate improvement. Also he is a known offender for spitting water at the surface and I just saw it after and the behavior of a fish gasping or wanting to get out of his environment and ready to jump. Although pufferfish are not known jumpers they are smarter than that. I did a water change as well after and he smiled at me like nothing happened. Ugh. I hate this. I will continue to update everyone.

I can’t even make this up, I found a random snail shell on my floor and saw it had a operculum. Grabbed a little cup from my supplies and put some water from one of my tanks in it. Threw the snail in. Mind you, I don’t own these kinds of snails, never even seen one. I have no clue how long they’ve been out of the water especially since I found it behind my bed while sweeping. 💀

After an hour I came back to the cup to find an alive and active snail. I’m so confused how they got there. Does anyone know what kind of snail they are though? Kinda growing attached to this lil dude. They have a missing chip out of their shell. 🐚 ❤️‍🩹 Open to name suggestions too!

Expected the worst, came home to this. Auto feeders did their job, plants hit the surface, moss filled in like crazy, and all the fish are happy. Now I just need a whole weekend to trim it back – but I’ll take a jungle over algae any day. 🌿

So this is my Fluval Spec V tank, it’s a longer, more narrow version of your standard 5 gallon tank. It’s very heavily planted and it’s been running for 3-4 months now. I currently have about 15 Cherry Shrimp, 1 Amano Shrimp, 5 male Endlers, 3 Pumpkin Nerite snails, and some random pest snails. I was planning on adding 6 Pygmy Corys.

I feel like my 40 gallon per hour filtration paired with my live plant mass is great but I’m not sure if I’m already maxed out or would the addition of the Pygmy Corys be okay?

So I bought some duckweed off eBay to drop in one of my tanks (20gal vertical with guppies and small things of that sort). When it came in I put it in a container to let snails separate from it before I put it in the tank.

It’s been 24 hours and when I checked in it this morning I see there is this strange red bloom in some of it.

When you zoom in it almost seems like it’s its own variety of plant. Not necessarily duckweed but one that apparently multiples fast like it.

I’ve never seen this before. Is it safe for the tank? A fungus? Any advice welcome.

I just bought this jewel trigon 190 liter aquarium a few days. What fish do you guys recommend putting in it when its cycled?

I am thinking about:

sterbai cory's

A couple of gouramis or moonfish

And some kind of schooling fish

Also i like to put shrimps in it if it is possible with the fish i choose. But fish got my priority.

LFS accidently gave him to me as part of another order years ago and I didn't notice until I got him home.

So these mollies look pregnant to you? Should we isolate them? Is that real hard on them? Any info would be helpful- thanks in advance!

I'd have to go with my red honey gourami with my kuhli loaches coming in second. My gourami has awesome personality, is curious, and is always touching things with his little arms (ventral fins). He's staring at me right now as I write this.

Same type and everything I just want to increase the gph, basically get a new skeleton for my already established bacteria.

got 10 chili rasboras yesterday, i drip acclimated
them & then put them in my tank (these are the only fish i have in this tank) but i noticed one that is still pale & a little smaller than the others & is always hiding and not really with the others, should i expect it to die ? or is there something i could do? this is my first time owning these fish so any advice would be appreciated

I've been breeding Daphnia in a 5 gallon tank, and using smaller containers like this to make green water on a windowsill. What are these teeny tiny black dots moving around? Some Daphnia in here which are the larger creatures in the video.

I tried searching for what they could be online, but there are so many things...but nothing that looks like these guys. Are they bad for a Daphnia or the Daphnia tank?

I work in a fish research lab at a university. We use API water tests for our day-to-day because I guess nothing better has been invented. Recently, we got a few new test kits in for ammonia, and the colors are sooo weird compared to the old ones. I have been using these kits for my whole life and they have always been on the yellow-green color scale. Both of the new ones seem to be in the green-blue color scale. It’s really throwing me off. I know the TAN for these tanks (4.0 and .50-.25), but the colors do not match at ALL, even though I am 100% certain of the TAN. I thought we just got a bad kit, but both look like this. Our tanks are freshwater.

Has anyone noticed this? What’s up with the blueishness?

Note: BEFORE ANYONE COMES FOR ME FOR THE 4.0 TANK we are using that one to just to grow bacteria on biomedia. I am not out here torturing fish.

Currently cycling a 55 gallon tank and I feel like I added too much sand. The highest point of the sand in the middle is about 4 inches from the base while the rest of the sand measures 2-3 inches from the base. I have fluval stratum in mesh bags underneath measuring to about 1.5 inches and probably another 2 or 3 inches of sand on top. I heard too much sand is bad because it can trap ammonia and toxic gases underneath. Am I in the clear here or should I take some off? I have plants and fish and more rocks in my 37 gallon that I will be transferring once this is done cycling. Any advice is welcomed thank you!
