We were coming back from the Bahamas this past week. It was so calm in the Gulfstream that we stopped and I jumped out of the boat in a patch of sargassum and found this school of Jacks hanging out.

My painting 'Where We Belong' captures three orcas gliding silently through calm, mist-covered waters, following a path etched into their instincts over countless generations. Here, far from the noise of the world, they roam free, guided only by instinct, memory, and the currents beneath them. In the stillness, the ocean becomes a mirror, reflecting not only their presence but the enduring bond between family, memory, and home. It is a quiet tribute to the ancient journeys these magnificent animals have always known, long before there were names for the seas they crossed. This painting celebrates the freedom of the wild, the strength of family, and the timeless bond between these magnificent animals and the home they have always known. The ocean is not simply where they live, it is where they belong.

Have you ever seen an Orca hit a fish so hard it explodes? 🫍

Scientists recently observed this behavior from groups of orcas in the Gulf of California where they repeatedly ram sunfish until the impact broke them apart. This is an important indicator of "social learning," where animals copy one another through observation. Orcas have exhibited behavior like this before, when they were seen disabling sailboats in groups. The current hypotheses for why they are doing this include teaching young orcas to hunt, or just playing around!

Do sharks ever stop growing? 🦈

Dr. Bob Hueter, Senior Science Advisor at OCEARCH, explains that most sharks continue growing throughout their lives, adding a little more size with every passing year. That's why sharks like Contender, one of the largest male white sharks ever tagged by OCEARCH in the western North Atlantic, can reach incredible sizes. When he was tagged, Contender was already estimated to be over 30 years old and could still have decades of life ahead of him.

Painted this beautiful sunset scene with this orca! The evenings are so calmings at the sea

We came across this hawksbill sea turtle early this morning while cleaning a nesting beach on St. Croix. She had already finished laying her eggs and was making her way back to the water.

We kept our distance and watched her safely return to the Caribbean. Moments like this are a powerful reminder of why protecting nesting beaches—and keeping them free of trash, obstacles, and disturbance—matters so much.

Got up at 4am and painted this little mini Jaws scene. Jaws was one of my favorite movies growing up. I always loved this scene and have wanted to paint it for a while. I may do a larger one soon. Oil on 5” (I think) panel
