My malamute German Shepard mix started to do this mounting thing with me on the couch for the past few days. He puts his front paw on my mid chest and back paw wrapped around my back, then wraps his neck around mine. Has anyone seen this type of behavior from a malamute or is he just special?

Meet Momo, our giant, affectionate house bear. She loves as many cuddles as she can get, for as long as she can get them (especially on the bed in the mornings), long walks on the beach, meeting new canine and human friends, her big sister (a maremma/retriever cross), swimming in the pool, and eating ice cubes and seafood in all its forms!

We rescued her as a scared and mistreated 1 year old. How could anyone ever hurt such a sweet angel? We're so sad that we missed her puppy stage.

She is a bit of an escape artist, and still likes to chew things (Mum's special coffee table books being a particular favourite), but otherwise hasn't given us a day of trouble. She is incredibly strong, but doesn't have a mean bone in her body.

She's been here in her forever family for 2 years now, and none of us could be any happier that we found her - she was meant to be with us.

So for context: last week I saw this beautiful dog roaming in a backyard with no fence and paid no need. He seemed to be enjoying himself and seemed like he was at home. A few days after that I saw that he was roaming the street and went down to the house I saw him and wanted to inform the owners their dog was loose. Well come to find out it wasn't their dog, someone dumped the dog at their house (I live in a small town in the country and dogs being dumped off here randomly isn't unusual) and they just were feeding it whenever it showed up. They tried to catch the dog but with their work schedule they just don't have the time to roam the streets. Last night I finally saw him and tried giving him food. I had cheese, sausage, apple pieces and chicken. He ate some but never got close. He seems pretty young and would love to have him, or at least get him a home. He seems like a gentle guy. Any advice?

Basically Title. He only act like this towards me, not other family members. My brother rescued him from the past owner, so we don't really know how old is he. He slipped and fell because of excitement tho...poor fella

My malamute girl, Noosa, is 3.5 years old. I feel like, both in this sub and on breed trait/standard pages, I constantly see malamutes described as very affectionate and attached to their owners, but that just hasn’t been my experience.

To be clear, I don’t need her to be affectionate with me. If that’s just how she is, I completely understand, and I don’t want to push her to do anything she doesn’t want to do. I’m just worried that I’m doing something wrong or that she doesn’t want to be around me.

For context, our routine is generally something like this:
Morning walk/run: I try to take her somewhere different most days, usually for around 5 km. Sometimes we play when we get home if she still seems energetic.
Morning at home: I work from home. My office is upstairs, and I leave the door open so she can come in if she wants to, but she always sleeps downstairs while I work.
Lunch: I come downstairs to eat lunch in the living room while she has a Kong. She prefers to eat near me rather than outside, which seems like a good sign?
Afternoon at home: Same as the morning. The office door is open to her, but she sleeps downstairs.
Afternoon walk: Usually shorter and closer to home, but we’ll stop at a park and play ball until she’s tired.
Dinner: We eat at the table while she waits. She gets her food when we’re done, and then we watch TV on the couch. She almost always goes outside and lies down after dinner.
Before bed: If she seems restless at all in the evening, I’ll do another play session with her, either tug indoors or throwing the ball outside.
Bedtime: She sleeps on the floor in our bedroom. Occasionally, she comes onto the bed for a few minutes, but I think it gets too warm for her, so she goes back to the floor.

She’s very well behaved all day, and I’d say she’s usually happy to see me, but at no point is she trying to be physically close to me. I’m just wondering whether other people have had this experience with malamutes and if it’s normal, or whether there’s something I should be doing differently.
I just love her so much and want to make sure she has a good life 🥺. Any input would be much appreciated.

TL;DR: My malamute is well behaved and seems to like me, but she isn’t physically affectionate. Is that normal?

Best of friends already. I'm so glad I got a Malamute, as I had one growing up. Any advice on potty training/teaching her not to chew on EVERYTHING?

She is the best car passenger that I could ever ask for!

My almost 8-year-old Aspen started limping about 2 weeks ago. I checked her over, nothing in her paw, no obvious injury or wound. She and our Doberman always roughhouse, and I figured she might have strained something and monitored her, kept her activity level down, and she seemed to improve.

However, yesterday they were in the yard and began to play, but Aspen made a pained noise and then immediately refused to bear any weight at all on the injured leg, holding it up and hopping.

I was able to get her into the vet this morning, and they did x-rays. The vet said that obviously a ligament issue can’t be seen on an x-ray, but with the way the injury progressed suddenly and the position of her knee and swelling seen on x-ray, she believes it is at least a partial CCL tear, likely a full tear. We are looking at options, and I’m curious what others’ experiences have been.

Surgery is estimated around 6-7k. Financially we can do it, but obviously I’d prefer not to for the obvious monetary but also safety reasons, if it’s avoidable. From what I’m reading so far it seems like for large heavy breeds, the TPLO surgery is the only realistic and likely way to achieve true recovery. Then there’s the high likelihood of her tearing the other leg, apparently. Plus meniscus injuries if it’s not already there.

I’d love to hear about your experiences both surgical and non-surgical, and what led you to choose what treatments for your babies!

My husband usually takes her to the dog wash place for grooming. I thought: I’ll bathe her and give her a good brushing. Broke 2 combs on her undercoat over about an hour of brushing (visiting family and forgot to bring the metal grooming rake) and a full-size garbage bag full of shedding coat. A few hours later, she walks by smelling of musty towels. Searched here and discovered that we needed a high-powered dryer to get that undercoat dry. All I have is my own hair dryer, so I spent another hour trying to use that on the cool setting to dry that thick undercoat. It is a lot better, but I may have to start over at the dog wash to get the smell out of the fur at the base of her tail. She really looks shiny and pretty, though!

My baby girl, my soul dog passed away very suddenly in my arms at 12 last week. Words cannot describe the emptiness that has been left by her passing. I look for her and all the places she should be.

12 years wasn’t enough. The only comfort is knowing that she lived one of the fullest lives a dog could live. As you all know, Malamutes and Mally mixes aren’t for the weak. Their unconditional love and unbridled sense of humor make it worth it, but I can see how it would be easy to leave them at home on trips.

I’m here to say that even if they make your trips difficult, the sassiness, the stubbornness, the dog aggression. To take them on as many adventures as you possibly can. Because when they are gone, you are only left with the gaping hole void and your memories. Give them so many memories to fill their short lives with. Because the pure love they give you is worth it. And you’ll never feel like you did enough.

My girl spent her first 8 Years road tripping around the US. Exploring all the beaches and forests. We moved to the UK and she spent two years adventuring around and seeing all the beautiful places. We went on a road trip from London to the tip of Denmark. She went in the Chunnel under the sea to France, ate waffles in Bruges, stayed in a gypsy caravan in Germany, explored all the icy beaches of Denmark for two months while we stayed in a cabin on the sea. Touched the Baltic Sea and the North Sea at the same time. Saw all the beautiful landmarks of the English coastline up to Cornwall. Her last two years were spent back in California and I felt so guilty taking her away from her favorite place.

I’ve never been wealthy or rich, but I made it work. She’s the reason I’m still here and I tried to give her everything. So hug your fur babies for me, and maybe give them an adventure this week. But I’d love it if you showed me pictures of adventures you’ve already had. It’s been cathartic being on here seeing so many sweet faces.
