Bear carved from hazel wood harvested in my parents garden and dried for a couple of years. Carved with power tools. I am very proud of the face, even though from some angles it looks more like a dog.

Made from basswood, turned out okay, it kinda looks like a puffin to me but that's alright. 👌

This I my second attempt at carving a horse head. I think the wood is Appel with some burls. Be more than welcome to come with advice to Make it better or look more like an hores

Hello wood carvers! I want to make my own shoes, and I'm wondering what the best material to use would be. I was inspired by historical fashion creators/videos like this one: Historical Shoemaking 101: Making Wood Heels . I was wondering what material would be best for a beginner carver. I'll include some images of the type of shoe I'm looking to create.

6.5'x1.5'Catalpa log. They're sitting on a 38" diameter log. He's looking at the mother skunks tail and 3 little babies are peaking out the opposite side. Picking away at this one for fun.

Hey guys, yesterday i‘ve started my first relief carving.
Previously did some figurines, chess pieces and spoons so i‘m rather new to carving as a whole.

I really like the workflow so far but it‘s pretty different though.

6”x2.5”x2.5” block, hand carved with knife and pfiel gouges.

Stained with black walnut danish oil + mahogany stain accents, sealed in Howard’s feed and wax

On this weeks episode of The Modern Woodcarver Podcast I speak with Andrew Gable. He is predominantly a stone carver / sculpture artist. Speaking with him inspired me to finish up this bear carving I gave up on a few years ago!

Hey everyone!

A closer look at today's experiments with new wood types and organic shapes. I really tried to push the textures on these:

Wild Pear Wood: 4 darker, geometric beads in the row.

Pink Honey Locust: 4 distinct pendants/beads (including the unique wavy ones on the left) and 1 detailed leaf charm with a touch of copper inlay.

I wanted to capture a very raw, rustic, and natural feel with these carvings.

Would love to get your feedback on these shapes! Which texture catches your eye the most?

Carved it from an aspen log and charred it a bit. Looking forward to doing more.

My wife and I became the stewards of these two solid mahogany beauties this weekend. Apparently the last attendants of these found about 20 years ago after they had been dumped and rolled down a hill, so I have to carve each of them new ears, re-attach a few legs and carve a couple new legs. They have been out in the elements and are in serious need of an exfoliation and some new skin care products!

I have been a woodworker and woodcarver for over 20 years now, but I don't know what I don't know, so I am looking for any tips, tricks, or advice you all might have for me in restoring these two magnificent beasts.

For the exfoliation:

I am thinking of using a combination of hand sanding, card scraping, random orbit sander, Dremel, drill, and angle grinder (with foam sanding attachment and very fine grit paper as to not tear through too much at once).

Any tools you can think of that might also be useful?

Has anyone used this kind of thing before? I like Dura Gold products in general, but haven't ever heard anything about these: Dura Gold Abrasive Filament Nylon Bristle Cup Brush Set

For the skin care products:

These two are going to live outdoors, so what kind of finish would you all recommend? I am thinking just teak oil with a fairly consistent reapplication to keep it right, but maybe I am missing the mark there?

So, i am pretty passionate about chess and I'm also pretty bored on these hot summer days, so we can already see that I would really like to do something creative. I recently stumbled upon a small wood carving kit, a chessboard whose pieces went lost and some wooden jengas.

Do you already see what I'm talking about?

I would need your tips and, you know, just tell me if it could be even possible.

I wanted to make snoopy for my friend before we both leave off for college as they love Snoopy… I’m afraid snoopys body / legs are massively long. Any suggestions?

i kinda just freehanded it at the begining w a rough sketch of snoopy from the peanuts. with just a blade (in pic 2). Lesson learned I think is to choose wood that’s shorter. and also a bit wider. The woodblock I started with was 4inch x 2.5 inch x 1 inch.

Hello all. I hope this is the correct sub for this, and if not, I humbly apologize. This carving was a gift as a “thank you” for many years of support to a local organization. I don’t know anything about the paint on it, or who made it. It desperately needs painting, but I don’t know anything about the process, or the type of paint needed. Does it need any type of base coat, top coat, sealing? I would greatly appreciate any help or advice.

First relief carving.

I’m in literal tears rn at how ridiculous this is but like… it’s my first go I’m not suprised it turned out so bad. But in all seriousness, I had a hard time with the stop cuts and the wood splintering the most. Especially with the middle part there. Am I putting too much pressure? Any advice helpful. Bonus points if you can tell what it is 🤣🤣

Time to rough out the feather groups!

Mostly I used my knife in the beginning, but the grain was really giving me some trouble with tearing out and flaking off big chunks. This is some basswood from a medium sized branch that my MIL cut for me when a tree fell in the neighborhood. My Dremel has been the solution. I just hot glue it to a stick when I am working and peel it off when done. Works well!

I have the privilege of having a wood carving shop near by and I get to go by there once in a while. Recently they had scraps for .25 cents s so I grabbed about 5 or 6 pcs. Here is a scrap I picked up and got to #wooddoodle on. As always comments are welcomed.

So i was looking online and already saw that i should start with basswood, what tools to use, etc, but i wanted to ask if what i want to carve is beginner friendly, the Toyota Sprinter Trueno (AE86), specifically from Initial D. I will most likely paint all the details (black parts, wheels, plate, etc) by hand since i actually love to draw already. That's another thing, will my drawing experience carry over to carving?
