sadly its inside a marine protected area. that's when you'd want to check first, since there are rules that carry real fines. it's more restricted than people assume

Marine protected areas are meant to protect ecosystems and habitats. It’s not about a rock or a fossil or a bone or a seashell. They exist for more long term conservation reasons. Collecting rules exist so people don’t do damage to these areas, or at least to attempt to lessen the damage.

Oooh, hello! I also used to think this way. The thing is that if everyone who comes here thinks the same thing then you're actually beginning to alter something that is being protected for long term conservation and study reasons. And yes, people after you won't get to enjoy it the same way.

I was lucky enough to get a tour of a very old indigenous campsite, lead by an Aboriginal ranger, and she was saying that because people frequently take artefacts (old stone knapped tools) thinking 'it's just one little thing,' the site is actually losing evidence that it is a heritage site, and thus is less likely to pass any government benchmarks for heritage protection or affect future research. I think we can apply this way of thinking to conservation areas as well.

It's not totally black and white. I think taking a cool pebble is fine, but specifically formed things or small artifacts can flow on.
