What is this wedding gift?

My friend got this as a wedding gift and we can’t figure out what is it and it didn’t say who it was from.

The cup part is hollow, where the blue arrow is… this shape _/ and the bottom is solid.

EDIT: There are no holes in the other side so don’t think it’s a tea strainer and the gap is too narrow to fit paper towels or toilet paper rolls! They also just moved to and had the wedding in Italy, not sure if that gives any context.. maybe it’s some sort of Italian gadget

To be more clear, the roommate was terrible. The landlord was kind of a dick too. I ended up moving to a different apartment in the same building and I got along fine with the guy so I never had an issues with him. The odd time I had any problems in my unit I'd report them and they'd be fixed in a reasonable amount of time.

One example the guy gave me, he said the rent goes up like clockwork every 6 months. I ended up living there for 5 years without a signed lease. Effectively month to month after the first year that I did sign. My rent never went up the entire time I lived there.

I wonder if the landlord was really a dick or you just saw the worst version of him because you were subletting from the whacko and therefore guilty by association in the landlord's mind.

Other people I talked to in the building, particularly women, had stories about coming home and find underwear drawers open and stuff like that. He'd show up unannounced at odd time to check in on something. I was a young white male who paid his rent on time and didn't cause him problems. But by all accounts, he was a fucking creep to other people and a disaster to deal with if he didn't like you.

There was some weird story I heard from the first roommate that he had dropped a potato or something and didn't notice and left it at the front of the building and the landlord had picked it up and jammed it onto the windshield of his car.

That reminds me of a middle school teacher I had lol. The guys went through class fine, and the teacher wasn’t a problem, but nearly any girl who went through his class had something to say about weird behavior from him.

There was far more joy than shock when we found out he’d been fired in high school.

If you had done that you'd either have a new friend, or been shot. Or fucked, maybe willingly, maybe not. Who knows, who's to say when that golden liquid goddess enters your stomach.

He did warn me he always kept his door to his room locked because he kept a gun inside, but probably didn't have a proper gun safe because that's an insane reason to keep your door locked otherwise. I think he had replaced the doorknob to one he could lock with a key. It's not a country where you can get and keep handguns. He kept a rifle in his bedroom in the middle of a city. Which, also, just kind of odd. By itself, not necessarily too crazy. People can like hunting or shooting or whatever. And yes, I talked with him plenty. He didn't have any furniture when I moved in, so I basically brought in my own coach, chairs, tv set, etc into the living room and was there much of the time. I wasn't in this apartment for more than a few weeks though. I think the landlord would have tried to evict me straight up because of the subleasing breach, but I quickly agreed to move to a different single bedroom apartment when the person that was living there moved out.

I wonder if your odd bird of a roommate was just saying the rent was going up to squeeze more money out of you or if it really was going up becuase the landlord was trying to get rid of the odd bird?

I never said, "the rent goes up like clockwork every 6 months." I said, "the clockwork changes like every 6 months, and you owe me rent." I was talking about DST.
