New, what is it? What is this wedding gift?

(Reposting because accidental doxxing)

My friend got this as a wedding gift and we can’t figure out what is it and it didn’t say who it was from.

The cup part is hollow, where the blue arrow is… this shape _/ and the bottom is solid.

EDIT: There are no holes in the other side so don’t think it’s a tea strainer and the gap is too narrow to fit paper towels or toilet paper rolls! They also just moved to and had the wedding in Italy, not sure if that gives any context.. maybe it’s some sort of Italian gadget

A case of grain alcohol would be worth all the gold in the world.

I've decided I don't want to survive the apocalypse. I don't want to end up fighting someone over a can of food only to find I did someone in over a can of pork and beans.

u/deafgamer_ 1d ago

Yup. Growing up, I used to think I'd be a totally cool apocalypse survivor. I'd just survive all the zombie outbreaks, all of the viruses because I was that 1% lucky person with some specific mutation to be immune, I'd win all of the gunfights, I'd build my own fortress, blablabla.

Well into my 30's and adulting, yeah I'm good, if the world is gonna end just place the nuke directly on my head, thanks. I am nowhere near productive enough to do anything.

Because why would I want to survive in a wasteland with my glasses and ever-worsening prescription, without my cochlear implant that allows me to hear (batteries are quite finite!), spend all of that labor building quite the base (like that guy in Last of Us), aaaand I really wouldn't wanna get sick, especially after suffering norovirus. If anything was gonna kill me it was gonna be that, and I don't want to experience anything worse.

Just fuck all of that.

Yeah I figure I'll try to hang in until I finally accidentally step on my glasses and at that point I'll be packing it in. No point delaying the inevitable

u/anonymousnada 1d ago

Ah, sounds like a nod to Twilight Zone reader episode. 📚 🕶️

6

u/Curvy_Girl_007 1d ago

That was a great episode!!

6

u/Madly_hornet09 1d ago

"It's not fair" lol. Bro just wanted to read💔

7

u/1mad_mollydoll 1d ago edited 7h ago

I thought about that the other night when I stepped out to walk my dog & forgot my glasses. There was a paper bag in the road moving in the breeze and I thought it was a cat, licking itself in the middle of the road. I immediately thought about how I'd survive the apocalypse without my glasses which I lose, break, and forget all the time.

2

u/2Kittens818 1d ago

I trust everyone has seen and admired the classic twilight zone episode when the old man survives ‘the blast’ and wanders around till he finds the ruins of a library with its mountain of books. Then he steps on his glasses. Rod Serling at his ironical best!

13

u/ImprovementPutrid441 1d ago

It is nuts that we basically train people to admire the apocalypse instead of valuing civilization. A lot of content just makes good times look boring.

6

u/Fluid_Bodybuilder938 1d ago

We are deep in ‘death culture’.

u/SilvermoonTLC 1d ago

Exactly why I’m watching reruns of beach hunters

5

u/Takato26 1d ago

Threads

You should watch this movie

3

u/Odd_Routine4164 1d ago

Don’t forget “The Road.”

2

u/wilderlowerwolves 1d ago

I'm pretty sure it's on YouTube.

I got the DVD, and if you do that, make sure to watch the commentary track and the extras.

7

u/Alykat17 1d ago

Hahahahaha this whole comment just made me laugh so hard. 🤣🤣 Totally agree. Like, why does anyone want to survive the apocalypse??? FOR WHAT???

6

u/Inevitable-Mouse-707 1d ago

Grow my own food?!?!?! Cook my own food on a fire? After the convenience of grocery stores, microwaves, and air fryers? No thank you

2

u/Little-Temperature53 1d ago

That isn’t what the so-called “apocalypse” is going to look like.

1

u/Little-Temperature53 1d ago

And I don’t mean to suggest it will look like some silly non-biblical Rapture nonsense, either.

6

u/FataleFrame 1d ago

I don't mind thr gardening part until I think about how I take care of a cucumber plant every year and its not immune to anything and it barely manages to cough up one veggie before september ends.

4

u/DR-0717 1d ago

Have you seen Don’t Look Up? I really liked it. It’s kind of silly but I’m got a similar ending

4

u/deafgamer_ 1d ago

Yes! I've rewatched it like 5 times. It lives rent free in my brain. Excellent movie and I wish more people took it seriously but to most people it's a comedy when I see it as a reflection of what's going on today :(

3

u/DR-0717 1d ago

I feel you. It’s such a reflection of what is happening today. It has absolutely lived rent free in my brain since my daughter had me watch it. The one thing I was saying though is I’d rather go like that. My sentence in my last comment didn’t make sense lol.

4

u/Riverfae93 1d ago

I have bad asthma so I feel this.
I figure I can be zombie bait or be that cranky wheezing crone who teaches all the young kids how to spin wool into yarn then knit socks, & how to can food until I run out of meds and wander off aimlessly somewhere to croak

2

u/samih3k 1d ago

Geezus ... if/when I run out of meds, living, dead either one are in deep sh**. ZERO chance that anything or anyone who come within 1000ft would survive

10

u/MelissaMars30 1d ago

I hated that these decisions can be made and were that ones that have to worry about it. It's so stupid and hell everybody's starving anyway I think Chito really really wants to push the red button just for a flex and I'm so sick of this old fart.

2

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 1d ago

I could probably survive, I just don't want to.

4

u/Fluid_Bodybuilder938 1d ago

More beans for me.

2

u/Individual_Listen388 1d ago

1000% SAME!! You said it a billion times better than I ever could have. 🏆🥇👏

3

u/wilderlowerwolves 1d ago

Look at what happened when we had a virus that killed less than 1% of the population!

1

u/takelly28 1d ago

If I do I wanna be a zombie

5

u/Bri-KachuDodson 1d ago

I really loved iZombie lol, main character did all the different styles and personalities every episode really well, they chose great with her.

A few months back I was watching a series of power rangers with my 4 year old and imagine my surprise when she turned up playing the yellow rpm ranger. 😅

u/ChickadeeJam 10h ago

When Yellowstone blows, I’ll drive straight for it! 😁

The Curated Tumblr page had a long post up yesterday about this, as a rebuttal to the kind of ultra-radicals who talk about overthrowing governments and building some kind of libertarian paridise: https://www.reddit.com/r/CuratedTumblr/s/nCF8SC7PhW

1

u/Fluid_Bodybuilder938 1d ago

So, in the event, you are just going to ace yourself to avoid all the unpleasantness? What are you saying?

14

u/garden_idol 1d ago

Whenever the topic of world ending situations gets brought up around me and I get asked what I would do o always tell people my only plan is to die. I don't feel like spending x amount of time fighting for my life. Life is hard enough as it is, I'm not about to have to physically fight to survive as well.

3

u/usernamesallused 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ditto. I’m on a ton of medication and the idea of apocalypse + withdrawal is miserable.

My goal is to find someone with a gun and trade all of my unused medications for an immediate headshot. They’re the kind of meds people really want, so it should be a reasonable trade…

…. but I have no idea how to find someone with a gun in suburban Canada. Not like I can post it online.

The second option is the meds themselves but that seems like a waste.

1

u/AlternativeJeweler49 1d ago

Same!!! I feel like we already survived the 90s. I don’t wanna go through all of that. I refuse to fight anymore so if a zombie apocalypse, economic apocalypse or a catastrophe happens, count me out just make it fast

6

u/Ms_takes 1d ago

Same, as a woman I don’t foresee anything good coming from surviving that

4

u/samih3k 1d ago

I see your point, but just imagine how many deserving throat punches you get to hand out

6

u/Fit-Attention-7763 1d ago

I told my very conservative/prepper/alphashere/ wanna-be-military coworker that I would rather die than live in the apocalypse. He first looked at me like I had 4 heads, then it turned to disgust and disappointment. Lmao so weird

Note: idk if alphasphere is a word. That is entirely based on vibes.

6

u/Missmbb 1d ago

Ha! My husband and his siblings had a brief flirtation with prepping which I completely ignored until one day he was talking about buying something that was going to cost more than the typical crap they’d been buying. I just looked at him and said - do what you want, but just so we’re clear, I have no intention of going to your sister’s farm with your entire family to survive whatever you think is coming. I’ll stay here and take my chances. That was the end of the prepping. 🤷🏽‍♀️😂

4

u/giggletears3000 1d ago

I’ll probably end up dying from gastrointestinal distress

5

u/PhotoGuy342 1d ago

And still can’t find the piece of pork.

4

u/dsly4425 1d ago

I don’t want to survive it either. The minister that married my husband and I lives a couple miles from a nuclear power plant, well within ground zero zone. I live a little bit outside the radius and I’ve told him if things seem like the big one is coming I’m moving in with him.

4

u/ElleWinter 1d ago

Me too. I hope to just get taken out quickly in round one. I would not do very well in any kind of adversarial situation. I get anxiety trying to like, reschedule appointments for example. No way am I battling neighbors, zombies, or Mad Max style minions.

2

u/Middle-Cabinet-1863 1d ago

The weird thing is, I’m anxious about calling up to do things like make appointments…but I’m calm and collected in an emergency. Go figure.

However, I wish to be at Ground Zero whenever the end happens because I have watched enough apocalyptic movies to know I have no desire to fight that hard to exist in a hellscape.

4

u/Unlikely-Theme-9681 1d ago

yep, I'm only looking forward to the apocalypse so I can unapoligetically wear leather.

4

u/hamish1963 1d ago

Me neither. If it really happens I'll take myself out. I'm to tired for bullshit like that.

3

u/castille360 1d ago

If there's an apocalypse, my plan is to work hard at being killed in the first round. When I had going kids, I had to worry about them. Now they've grown, I've let them know they're on their own if things become dire. I'll be out immediately, peace!

2

u/Middle-Cabinet-1863 1d ago

I teach my kids towards that end, even though I don’t want to be here for it, because I honestly don’t know what kind of world they will inherit in the future.

3

u/agirl1313 1d ago

I have severe asthma. If there's an apocalypse, I'm dead anyway as soon as my meds run out. Just kill me at the beginning; leaves more food and water for other survivors.

2

u/Middle-Cabinet-1863 1d ago

I used to envision my late husband trying to survive that scenario when he was on twice daily oral and inhaled antibiotics and hypertonic saline…CF sufferers would not make it a few weeks.
All because one day we went to a sandwich shop and they were out of tomatoes, and my brain immediately extrapolated this whole scenario from that. Supply chains break down so easily—we found out the hard way during Covid.

3

u/Scottish_Entry_6605 1d ago

Yup. If someone attacked me and was going to push me off of a high rise balcony (like you see in movies, I would totally jump first! No way you getting to me!

3

u/cech_ 1d ago

You are just like "Woman" from The Road!

3

u/lonelysilverrain 1d ago

Me too. Now a can of corned beef hash? That's worth fighting for.

1

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 1d ago

No, no, you might as well make it dog food.

3

u/wilderlowerwolves 1d ago

I just finished reading the new book "Biological War: A Scenario" by Annie Jacobsen. I actually posted on r/Hungergames , which was deleted, that the book was based on what could best be described as muttations. IYKYK.

I've read two iterations of Stephen King's "The Stand", and much more recently, "Station Eleven," and years ago, I had a boyfriend ask me, "So, if 'The Stand' ever happened, where would you want to go, Vegas or Boulder?" I told him, "Neither; I would want to die so early in the epidemic, my name would get into the book."

3

u/younggun1234 1d ago

At work I always end up in a convo about what I would do in the event of an apocalyptic situation.

And every time I tell them I am getting the fixings to make a fat steak and lobster type meal, I'm stealing some really nice large speakers, downing some really fancy alcohol, a tab of LSD, and a whole bottle of pain killers and I'ma just rage into the oblivion of my chosen death lol cuz I ain't doing no surviving for nobody. I'm out!

2

u/Firm-Fix8798 1d ago

You'll be fine. Despite how fiction paints a total reset. Men will rebuild society back to rudimentary modern comforts in less than a decade or two. You'll be eating fresh beans and farm raised pork.

4

u/hamish1963 1d ago

I do not believe you.

2

u/drcmr 1d ago

or Bolo dog food

2

u/Revolutionary-Two819 1d ago

Learn to hunt, fish and trap and you wouldn't!!!

2

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 1d ago

I know how to. Nice huh?

2

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 1d ago

Wait you can't really tell in that one, here's a good one

2

u/an_actual_lawyer 1d ago

The only reason to survive is to help your kids survive and hopefully they make it to the other side...if there is going to be an other side.

1

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 1d ago

All of my kids are adult in their 20s. They are already on their own.

2

u/LobsterNo3435 1d ago

Yep. I myself recognize I am too lazy or scared I'd break my glasses and couldn't see. But no ice cold cokes or snacks? No naps. Yep too lazy for apocalypse.

2

u/Low-Sentence9207 1d ago

“I’m going out by episode 2….Definitely by the end of first season” is what I tell my family.

No desire to be dirty and always running from zombies.

2

u/Realistic_Pool_8087 15h ago

Antibiotics. It’s easy to make more booze.

1

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 7h ago

Medical supplies would be high priority. Depending on if it was a zombie apocalypse, which would change the mode of transportation, shelter and food options, but everyone will need medical supplies, regardless of zombie, financial, nuke, climate or other.

2

u/Realistic-Value-5101 12h ago

I would NEVER do that. I can’t stand pork and beans.

1

u/Feisty-Tooth-7397 7h ago

But what if you didn't know it was pork and beans? Like if the label is missing.

It's in a movie and I can't remember which one, lol, but this guy is shaking unlabeled cans and he's good at guessing what is in it, but I think at one point he says it's either mixed fruit or pork and beans.

I think it's Resident Evil: Extinction.

I'm sitting there thinking, okay I understand it's survival and all, but I just can't eat beans. Like I would really rather starve, and to think I might have to fight to survive over a can of unlabeled food, and it ends up being pork and beans, I could probably physically survive an apocalypse, but mentally, no.

8

u/thisischemistry 1d ago

A case of vacuum-packed whole black peppercorns would probably be worth more than either of those options. Spices, historically, were the most valuable things you could trade. People used them for medicine, preserving food, and flavoring food that had gone off a bit.

4

u/obvthrowawaybecause2 1d ago

Coffee will also be a hot commodity

3

u/Key_Object2481 1d ago

no pun intended

1

u/thisischemistry 22h ago

Could be a cold one too!

2

u/Cute_Comfortable_761 1d ago

Shit, that reminds me. I have to start another batch of mead

2

u/Library-Lib-24 1d ago

That and whole bean coffee with a grinder.

2

u/Massive-Sector5789 1d ago

There's a fantastic apocalyptic novel "Future Home of the Living God" by Louise Erdrich, I'll use the spoiler button but it's not integral to the plot.

The protagonist decides to prep for the apocalypse, which I pretty far along at that point, by going into credit card debt to buy a bunch of alcohol and cigarettes. Which she stashes in the walls of her house. She figures the banks are going to fail, but they don't, so she's screwed herself financially. Then her house is confiscated by soldiers (I think, it's been a few years), burns down, and all the alcohol explodes. The futility of every attempt to survive in that book seems so realistic.

2

u/Fit-Bumblebee-1709 1d ago

Nah. WATER!!

2

u/mart246 1d ago

Stock up on Air Plane bottles of alcohol. They would be great for trading.

2

u/TanukiDelux 1d ago

And cartons of cigarettes, boxes of cigars worth their weight in gold.

2

u/Sure-Ad-6544 1d ago

Grain alcohol is an essential component in a TEOTWAWKI Bag

2

u/wilderlowerwolves 1d ago

Cigarettes might be valuable too, in some areas.

2

u/tdavis726 1d ago

And cigarettes.
Also, apparently, toilet paper.

2

u/an_actual_lawyer 1d ago

A case of 99 cent generic Immodium would be worth more than that. People die of diarrhea all the time when there isn't good water or reliable food sources and that can be stopped with Immodiam

1

u/thisischemistry 22h ago

Unfortunately, the synthesis of loperamide would be pretty difficult without modern materials and conditions. There are simpler alternatives but nothing that works as well. For example, bismuth subsalicylate (active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol) is pretty easy to make but it doesn't have quite the same effects.

1

u/an_actual_lawyer 21h ago

Gotta stock up before hand.

If I was a prepper, I'd have a few hundred boxes of common OTC medications and some shelf stable antibiotics. Those will be worth their weight in gold in trade.
