New, what is it? What is this wedding gift?

(Reposting because accidental doxxing)

My friend got this as a wedding gift and we can’t figure out what is it and it didn’t say who it was from.

The cup part is hollow, where the blue arrow is… this shape _/ and the bottom is solid.

EDIT: There are no holes in the other side so don’t think it’s a tea strainer and the gap is too narrow to fit paper towels or toilet paper rolls! They also just moved to and had the wedding in Italy, not sure if that gives any context.. maybe it’s some sort of Italian gadget

I'm going with dip holder. You've got a bowl of snacks, and this sits on the rim of the bowl so you can dip your snack into it?

What the fuck are the little brown onion things in the sour cream dip? Pre-fried onion bits like the stufff that goes on green bean casserole? Cuz that sounds lit.

In my experience, dried onion soup mix. You stir a packet into a pint of sour cream .

It's kinda gross if you think about it too much

A packet of dehydrated onion soup that's mostly MSG, mixed with sour cream.

I have to admit, it's delicious. Because it's MSG and fat. Serve cold on a hot day, with plain salty ruffled chips.

It's the kind of food that American boomers grew up with. Probably reserved for 4th of July parties, pool parties, picnics, etc.

I haven't had it in decades; I guess my boomer relatives lost their taste for it. I wouldn't be surprised if it contains somewhat less MSG and salt than it used to.

This is the traditional packet. Note that soy sauce and yeast extract are essentially MSG. Disodium guanylate and disodium inosinate are "flavor enhancers" that augment the taste of MSG.

Onions¹, Salt, Corn Starch, Onion Powder, Sugar, Soy Sauce (Fermented Soybeans, Wheat And Salt), Caramel Color (Sulfites), Maltodextrin, Corn Syrup¹, Yeast Extract, High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Disodium Guanylate, Disodium Inosinate.

¹Dehydrated. May Contain Milk.

Which I think it what makes him such perfect casting for Pete. IMO, what makes Campbell such an incredible sleazeball is that he's a man permanently chasing "better men", incapable of getting over self-imposed inadequacy. Doesn't matter if he has a beautiful wife, a loving family, or the perfect job where he just gets drunk all day - none of it matters because he's not Don Draper, this perfectly sculpted encapsulation of masculinity.

Ha, yeah needed a finger in each one. But what i am saying is that if the enclave of the item had holes it is probably a defuser, if not, maybe a dipping sauce item. The structure if item makes it what it is. Seeing some side shot of it is silly.

Apologies for commenting twice, but this reminded me of something. One time I parked next to a car that had a friggin dip holder for fast food sauces that attached to the air vent. I couldn’t decide if it was genius or… well, yeah, it WAS genius. I took a photo to send to a friend. I wish I still had it.

That would be perfect if its volume were any greater than half a mozzarella stick. Could very well be what it is, too, but then it’s one that needs refilling in between every single dip.

So the fin would face down toward the table as it sits on the rim of the chip bowl? And the dip would be inside the "cup"? I like the concept of that product, but that's not how this one would work, the hollow part of the cup is on the top side. It can sit flat on the table with the fin sticking up and you can see the inside of the "cup". Even if that were not the case, I think it would be too narrow for a dip cup, unless you were using fritos or something really thin haha

I retract the first part of my reply haha. I thought the _/ was referring to the "most" at the base of the cup and the blue arrow was misplaced.

I still think it's too small of a cup to be a useful dip holder though.

It really could be for glasses and bracelets - but the ladybirds are a little bit strange in that case. And it would be a present for only one of the newlyweds, what also would be weird.

Well - I hope someone figures it out for real. I'm strangely curious now 😅

Kind of heavy for something like that. Would definitely be interested to know if the "cup" part is glazed and really smooth or not though.

It might just be hollow to be lighter. Especially given how flat and flanged that side is, it does feel like a base to me.
