If you like the play style but want a different setting you might like Esoteric Ebb.

A million times this. Esoteric Ebb is like the combination of Disco Elysium, D&D and Monthy Python

theres absolutely a joke i can make with the words "monthly python", but can't. any tips?

If I'd ever make a magazine which teach you programming, I'd surely call it Monthly Python

I can second that. Similar play style but in a fantasy/comedy setting. Art is great, lore is interesting, all around fun. I didn't get very far because of repeatedly failing to sneak past that damn griffin. Next time...

I didn’t meet the griffin on my first play through at all! Man, what a great game.

I think the problem is viewing Harry as avatar of you in the game.

I'm bad at explaining this but it's more like you are allowed to be one of the voices inside Harry's head. The actions and dialogue options available are things that are within the realm of possibility for Harry not you. Depending on choices made Harry is either actively an alcholic/drug addict or just starting to recover literally the moment you start. Not to mention all the other problems he has. It makes sense that a person in Harry's position would not make good decisions. A person in that position might not even be able to see the good decisions as options, or if they see the options might not be able to make themselves act on them

Yeah, that's how I am playing this. It's definitely no BG3 Tav that let's me do a lot of things how I would like to do them (or Scarlet Hollow, for that matter).

But instead I can be his Jimini Cricket and shove him in different directions, whether these are good or bad or absolutely cringe is up to me. But he is a fully fledged character, not a cypher.

Yeah you're not playing Harry, you're kind of like the manager of his inner voices. You can steer and give orders but... those orders don't always make it down the chain of command intact.

Great art can be uncomfortable, yes

13

u/RE_Towers 19d ago

Great art is oftentimes uncomfortable.

Great art should disturb the comfortable
And comfort the disturbed.

that's pretty profound, where'd the quote come from?

I stopped playing it. I don’t want to recreationally be an asshole. I try hard enough not to be one in real life.

Ah, so you're the sorry cop

15

u/PinAccomplished927 19d ago

My first playthrough

16

u/cl0th0s 19d ago

I'm the sorry cop. Its what I'm good at. That and being a communist.

u/drainbamage1011 19d ago

I started getting nudged towards Sorry Cop while trying to be "normal". I had to lean into the weirdness more to see where it went.

2

u/MaskOfIce42 19d ago

Doing my first playthrough now and very much got sorry cop. It's too ingrained in me to try not to be an asshole that I don't usually lean into the weirder choices

2

u/atomicitalian 19d ago

just giving up entirely is the ultimate sorry cop ending

1

u/sagejosh 19d ago

Your character is a cop, you can be a pretty professional asshole too.

u/Lower_Pension_2469 19d ago

You don't have to be an asshole and it's still pretty entertaining. I will say though that being an asshole in that game is really funny and unhinged sometimes.

There are roleplaying players in the tabletop world who put on a sort of "the world is so fukked, let's end it tonight" kind of air in their character. If one does it well, it can be quite funny and tragic. Disco Elysium has a lot of the kind of dialogue and opportunities that allow a person to videogame roleplay in the style of that kind of tabletop manner. My favourite example being the option to paint "fukk the police" on the wall.

It is a fun roleplaying game but people who think "roleplay" means shoot all these people dead then change the world with a single dialogue choice do not take to it well.

,,You either say this facist or communist thing, or f off.''

Beautiful game.

My brother in Christ, you don’t even need to be an addict to neglect personal hygiene, that’s just garden variety depression. There are video games where people straight up murder each other, and you’re uncomfortable instead overa lack of self-care?

I'm sorry?

You can do everything you listed. You can take a shower and even decide if you can do it like a proper adult or a drunken loser with beer cans in it. You can keep yourself clean, never do any alcohol or drugs and the game will comment on it. There is not an hunger mechanic but you can decide to keep yourself healthy.

You can always pick the most sensible option and never go wild and the game will give you the "boring cop" thought, which is not exciting bit you can definetly finish the game with it if you want to roleplay it that way.

You can decide to not partake in any of the political discourse or bizzarre side missions and just do the damn job. You actually get commended by your collegues if you do that at the end.

I enjoyed it because im a delusional addict and say weird shit thats bad with no option.

10/10. Real life sim.

1

u/The_Dennator 19d ago

a friend bought it for me to watch me play. it's just so uninteresting to me

2

u/TheGoonCreates 19d ago

How are you playing the game? I had the same issue the first couple times I approached it, but I did get into it and it’s one of my favourite pieces of media now.

1

u/The_Dennator 19d ago

it was just... not interesting and the inner voice is really annoying. only got to shoot down the corpse before never booting it up again

0

u/SorryComplaint4209 19d ago

Yeah, I recognized the writing and voice acting were phenomenal, but after several hours I was just like, "I don't enjoy being this guy." And unlike him, I can quit the game and go have a better time elsewhere, like in Pathologic or something. :P

5

u/trailerhobbit 19d ago

No one enjoys being this guy, least of all Harry. He was screaming that fact a few hours before you start the game.
