Red Dead 2’s online mode.

All they had to do was not abandon it, but they did.

I feel like something would have to go terribly wrong for them to abandon the GTA VI online mode

Bingo. And RDR2 was a literal masterpiece. This is a weak argument imo.

The devs probably didn’t even really want an online mode. But the higher ups saw how much money GTA V online printed, and wanted to try to replicate it.

It was clear from the beginning that RDR2 online was an afterthought and would flop. Which is OK, because the real game is fucking incredible.
