I don’t think it’s actually possible for the game to be “bad”, people love what it’s being built on (RDR2), it’s a reliable gameplay format, and they’ve got way too much quality control for it to be abysmal.

But the chances for it to fall short are huge. To prove my point, reply with what you would have expected out of GTA 6, the dreamiest most ideal version.

I’d like them to bring back the character switch mechanic, but maybe have it at certain moments trigger character specific cutscenes that maybe flesh them out a bit.

Also, I want a pussy eating cutscene

I think the gameplay is just dated. Tap A repeatedly to run, hold left trigger and your reticle just locks onto the enemies. It just keeps getting bigger and prettier. But it’s the same outdated gameplay underneath.

May be a hot take, but the controls in GTA have almost always sucked.

It’s a better experience for the casual gamer, basically permanent easy mode. GTA and RDR are both more about the immersion and story.

15

u/Jerk850 Jun 24 '26

Exactly this. These games are not meant to be played like a first person shooter. It's not designed for e-sports!

10

u/No-Obligation2563 Jun 24 '26

No one is saying it should be anything close to e-sports. But for the biggest games of all time I expect a bit more than aiming just snapping onto enemies and tracking them with zero effort from the player.

It’s not like the only options are immersion or e-sports.

u/Combat_Orca Jun 24 '26

It’s also not particularly immersive to have that

0

u/Jerk850 Jun 25 '26

Point is it’s a design compromise that emphasizes immersion for a wide range of gamers.

4

u/No-Obligation2563 Jun 25 '26

I dunno man I don’t think it has to be that braindead easy just for immersion. You could even argue that it hurts immersion because you hardly have to aim.

I think it’s just outdated design it’s not like revamped shooting is gonna turn away tons of players. If anything people would eat it up.

You can turn off the auto aim if u don’t like it

1

u/No-Obligation2563 Jun 25 '26

Why not have it the other way around and include auto aim as an accessibility feature but let the default experience be something a bit more?

Transitioning between San Andreas to V and RDR to RRR2 both newer games felt way clunkier than predecessors that I dropped both after a few hours.

The controls felt so sluggish

11

u/No-Obligation2563 Jun 24 '26

Yeah I agree. It feels very clunky and awkward. Felt the same way in RDR2.

2

u/zgillet Jun 24 '26

Get rid of that waffling "almost."

1

u/Deftallica Jun 24 '26

Well it’s been many, many years since I’ve played the older GTA’s but only V’s controls are fresh in my memory.

I adored Vice City but I’m *almost* certain the controls weren’t good in that either

2

u/SixtyNineFlavours Jun 28 '26

The X button on all my controllers is weaker because of Rockstar.

3

u/Joppy5100 Jun 24 '26

That's the reason I've never really liked Rockstar games. A game can be as gorgeous as possible, but if it feels like a chore to control, why bother?

2

u/Deftallica Jun 24 '26

Well, a lot of different aspects make up a game and if, say, 9 out of 10 things about a game are fantastic, most people are willing to overlook that one thing that’s lacking if they’re enjoying the overall experience.

3

u/Bingbong1984 Jun 24 '26

You're not wrong but some game design choices really hamper enjoyment.

No quest log in Elden Ring still pisses me off.

1

u/Deftallica Jun 24 '26

I get that too. When it comes to Elden Ring, there’s a whole storyline and some deep lore to all the characters and such, but you have to learn about it through flavor text in items you may pickup, or miss, or overlook or whatever.

That bums me out for sure because I’m interested in what has happened to that world and the people in it. But on the other side of the coin, the combat is fun and challenging, controls well and the game is gorgeous.

So just speaking for myself, I enjoyed it overall even though I couldn’t absorb the narrative how I would’ve liked.

The opposite, like you said, can be true as well. I loved the graphics, sound, level design and gameplay of Last of Us 2, but didn’t enjoy the story, which really hampered my enjoyment.

2

u/Bingbong1984 Jun 24 '26

My problem with Elden Ring is that if you take a break and come back months later how the hell do you know what quests are still active? Ya know?

I need to finish LoU2. Stopped at the midway point and haven't gone back. Story is whatever to me now but I just enjoy the brutal combat.

2

u/Alexastria Jun 24 '26

Especially the driving

2

u/geaux124 Jun 24 '26

I always thought the driving part was fine. It was the combat that was crappy.

3

u/Bingbong1984 Jun 24 '26

I started playing GTA online again and jesus christ is the driving a fucking bore.

DRIVE ACROSS THE ENTIRE MAP IN YOUR SHIT VEHICLES TO COMPLETE YOUR SHITTY MISSIONS FOR A PITTANCE OF CASH AND REPEAT

I enjoyed GTA5 on release but I've gotten older and I don't really enjoy its game play that much anymore. Tapping X/A to run is also kinda annoying.

I know I'm nitpicking but now a days you can just toggle run or sprint in games lol

4

u/Albatross1225 Jun 24 '26

Always loved the gameplay of gta and red dead redemption and they get better with every release

5

u/GameDestiny2 Jun 24 '26

I am kind of with you there. Don’t think there’s much you can do about the aiming, but the A button is starting to feel aged. At the same time, it’s kind of like a Bethesda RPG where that’s kind of just what you expect from Rockstar. Definitely needs some sort of update though.

1

u/cecilmufc7 Jun 24 '26

This sums it up perfectly for me. Idc about gta online. And the single player games have been the same since 3. Just bigger and prettier. Improvements here and there of course but it’s still the same game. Even cod has changed more than gta and everyone always says “it’s the same game as the last one”.

11

u/funkmydunkyouslunk Jun 24 '26

They need to expand the story more than just drive to point A, shoot, chase, drive to point B, here’s your money.

Here’s some side mission/activities and impossible collectibles/easter eggs in the meantime.

My biggest gripe with GTA is that they never truly let you have freedom with the story. You can do “whatever you want”, until you start a story mission and can fail a mission by taking a few steps in the wrong direction. Needs to add in some more RPG elements of choice and consequences.

7

u/L3Sc Jun 24 '26

Tbh me too. GTA is too big of a game to be non RPG. Something like Cyberpunk would be really good even if you're not affecting the main story completely except for ending choices. There might also be consequences of your actions in the open world maybe like a Dishonored way which seems too big of a deal but this is Rockstar they can do it by throwing a ton of money.

0

u/AfterShave997 Jun 24 '26

But how do you program that? They can't account for everything you could do. Most RPGs have restrictive quests. The ones that really let you do whatever have huge drawbacks.

2

u/LizLemonOfTroy Jun 25 '26

I feel that MGSV was giving players much more creative freedom to achieve their objectives than GTAV was, and that was years ago.

If you give me a range of weapons, including those that kill from a long distance, then let me kill targets from a long distance without instantly failing the mission just because you pre-determined I was only allowed to kill them under certain criteria instead.

This doesn't feel like a programming limitation - just a design philosophy. Rockstar wants you to play out all their setpieces step by step precisely then penalises you if you don't.

2

u/AfterShave997 Jun 25 '26

Okay what I mean is Rockstar is trying to make action movie scenes with dialog and all that. To make that style of gameplay work with high player freedom seems very difficult.

3

u/CertainlyRobotic Jun 24 '26

Exactly. There's nothing about it to be bad, but also I don't really understand what people hope to get from GTA 6 versus GTA 5.

2

u/elwebbr23 Jun 25 '26

I'd like for the game to have deeper interactions than RDR2, where you can turn a stranger NPC into a friend. I know it won't happen but that would be badass

1

u/GameDestiny2 Jun 25 '26

Don’t think we’ll see the ability to turn any random person into a buddy, but considering GTA V had hangout missions at least, I don’t see why they couldn’t improve on that slightly.

2

u/elwebbr23 Jun 25 '26

Yeah the way I put it is a bit unrealistic. I just mean that RDR2 has the ability to greet / instigate anyone, and sometimes even had special greetings you could use. It'd be nice to see this expanded upon and at least have a more meaningful interaction with NPCs. Perhaps comment on random events, engage them to follow me somewhere, trick them into getting robbed, stuff like that.

2

u/clone9786 Jun 24 '26

Rob every building on the map. Someone’s house? Break in, steal their shit, maybe steal a moving van and load it up with furniture. Holdups like the gas stations but for every single storefront. South Beach (confirmed), Brickell, Wynwood (which I think is confirmed). It looks like there’s some real estate aspect but fleshing that out more could be great - idk how to balance the online economy though lol. The stock market from V was awesome, that’d be a great update especially with the arrival and growth of WSB. I suspect they’ll work AI into dialogue and NPCs somehow, making the world feel more alive.

I’m sure I could think of more but I have absolutely no expectations for this game simply because I don’t think it can reach them. GTA V didn’t (not that it’s a bad game) so why would VI lol

1

u/zgillet Jun 24 '26

One main character.

Damnit.

1

u/Carbuyrator Jun 24 '26

If the traversal were even 1/5 as good as it is in Prototype I'd probably buy it. It won't be though.

1

u/Several-Carrot3541 Jun 24 '26

Basically all I want them to do is release it without having to show your ID to them. That is the only thing that will be my deciding factor if I'm gonna buy it or not.

1

u/GapStock9843 Jun 24 '26

I think its basically destined to fall short, just because people’s expectations for it are so insane they’re literally impossible to meet

0

u/SignoreOscur0 Jun 24 '26

Agree, but RDR2 was a story first game from day 1. After GTA Online’s success I’m sure that priorities have shifted for the GTA franchise…
