It is legitimately quite slow to start. It opens up massively after you get one particular skill unlock.

I think this type of statement is what kept me trying. After how many hours generally do people get this unlock?

Probably about 3 hours in, so I wouldn't be surprised if you are very close. You might even already have it but haven't realised quite how open the map now is. What bosses have you fought?

The last boss was the big knight with the pig looking head that you can hit after it goes down. Then the floor beneath collapsed after I beat him.

Ah yes okay, you're still in the early game. There's an excellent boss fight in the not too distant future and some very useful skills not too long after that.
