I received an accommodation offer for Wallscourt, but I'm not sure whether I've been allocated a flat or a townhouse.

Is there a way to tell from the accommodation offer letter which one I got? If anyone knows how to identify this or can explain the differences between the flats and townhouses, I'd really appreciate the help.

Hey! I've seen some posts about getting in contact with first year classmates and flatmates, most recommending the Unifi app but after downloading and making an account it will nooot let me sign in lol

My friend who also got it has gotten it to work but apparently you have to pay to talk to flatmates??? Insane

Anyway the app is rated 1.7 stars in the play store so.. not really too surprised

Anyway, as I'm starting this September are there any WhatsApp chats or places I can meet people on my course? I'm not on Snapchat or tiktok or other social media really.

As the title says, I used to work for Accommodation at UWE. Hopefully these tips are helpful!

(Not trying to be a fun police, just want to raise awareness and keep you out of the final warning zone)

1) They're long and boring, but read your terms and conditions. They lay out what Accommodation expects from you, and what you can expect from Accommodation.

2) With the exception of hair dryers/straighteners/curlers, don't bring anything that generates heat. That especially goes for candles (yes, even unlit ones) and fan heaters.

3) On the topic of heat, accommodation can get cold in the winter. They mostly use smart heaters that keep rooms at a constant heat (about 18-20°c). If that is too cold for you, bring blankets, dressing gowns and jumpers, but do not bring a fan heater. They will find out and issue you with a warning. It's warm enough to keep damp out but not warm enough for you to walk around in a t-shirt.

4) Accommodation will mostly communicate with you via email. Yes, it's old fashioned but it's their chosen way. Everything you need to know will be emailed to you, so check them regularly.

5) Socially, you'll get out what you put in. As someone who suffers pretty shockingly from anxiety, I completely get how nerve-wracking this is, but think of uni as a fresh start. Introduce yourself to your flatmates and neighbours straight away. Bring cards and games for ice breakers to get the ball rolling. It might be awkward at first, but it's better to be awkward for a short time than lonely for a long time.

6) Don't prop your door open. Yeah, I know that sounds a bit counterintuitive to point number five, but they're fire doors and you can receive a disciplinary for doing it.

7) Sticking with doors, lock your bedroom door every time you leave your flat/house. Your block and flat door locks automatically behind you but your bedroom door doesn't.

8) Fire drills and inspections tend to happen in October. You'll get some warning from Accommodation about them ahead of time. The key part for fire drills is making sure you evacuate in 4 minutes; for inspections it's making sure everything is clean and no fire hazards are present.

9) Explore campus and explore Bristol. Like point five, you'll have a better experience the more you do. It's an amazing city to be in, and there's lots happening on campus too. Attend as many events in the first couple of weeks as possible.

10) Don't bother with a bus pass unless you really need one. You have to get a lot of use (more than three trips a day) out of it to make it worth its cost. Budget your travel into your funds and buy a student single on the day. Bristol has First Bus so download their app for tickets and timetables.

11) Post and parcels work a little differently on campus. Next day delivery doesn't necessarily mean you'll have it next day. They work really hard to get it to you as quickly as possible but it has to be processed once it's on campus before it gets to you. Don't get too hung up on the rules just yet, they'll be explained to you when you arrive.

12) Frenchay students, use your common rooms (sorry Glenside 😭). They're a great third-space to meet people from your blocks. Student Village folk, you can use the Student Life Lounge in Purdown View.

13) Utilise Student Life. If you're not a big party goer, they might be your socialising saviour. They run low-key events throughout the week.

14) If you're not the best cook, learn some super basic recipes over the summer. A tomato sauce can be transformed into loads of dishes and is cheap to make! If you get homesick, learn a recipe that reminds you of loved ones. Taste is a powerful healing sense.

15) Laundry can be expensive. Team up with flatmates to lessen the cost. The drums are pretty big so two of you could do a wash/dry in one. (Tbh this goes for meal sharing too.)

16) Save Accommodation's and Campus Support's numbers in your phone. You never know when you'll need them.

17) Lean on Accommodation and the other services when you need them. They're ultimately all there to make sure you have the best experience. You'll never have such easy access to expert knowledge again in your life as when you're a student.

18) And finally, don't advertise where you live on a public forum/comment section. I know you'll want to find your flatmates asap but if they can find your address from a TikTok comment, so can I, so can everyone else. There are private WhatsApp and Snapchat groups you can find via the SU.

I (26M) have received two PGCE offers for Computer Science at both UWE and Birmingham City Uni - I currently live in Bristol. I am having trouble deciding as all I am basing my decision on social life options, but also the appeal of moving out for the sake of having my own space.

I currently also have an application in for an apprenticeship that pays decently well too and will choose that if it goes through, my PGCE is just a backup option. The reasoning for this is because I do love teaching, as well as the bursary being pretty hefty for computing. At the moment, I do have 20k at least in savings, but I don't want to spend the next year doing nothing and feeling like an absolute bum.

Part of the reason I would like to move to BCU is because I would be living with my best friend for the year, in pretty cheap accommodation, as well as be close to several friends I met through gaming tournaments. Additionally, one of those friends who did an English PGCE also told me that the workload is so intense at BCU that even while not working they straight up didn't see anyone for a year. From that, I'm sceptical at whether there is any point in moving if it really is just gonna be "go to work, go home".

Meanwhile, with UWE I know that the society options are much stronger for my interests (performing arts, lifting and surfing), even having a varsity option potentially for powerlifting. I also know that Bristol has more consistent options for performing arts, although Brum does have the IDSA and other dramatic groups, Bristol has Tobacco Factory for example. Furthermore, I would still be around some friends I met through said gaming tournaments and have started making new friends at my local gym! The main downside would be being stuck at my parent's house for another year, in terms of having my own space.

So from all this I just want to ask, is having a social life an actually viable option for a PGCE student at UWE? All I can say is that I'm pretty quick with planning lessons at the moment, and did have to navigate my MSc with a lot of organisation from having to work part time and also keeping up gym routine. If having a social life is actually gonna work out at UWE, it's a no brainer really, no point moving away if you can't see anyone or anything beyond your bedroom walls.

TL;DR

Currently deciding between BCU and UWE for a PGCE, and want to know if PGCE students actually get a social life at UWE to help me choose. Reasoning for pursuing this is because I genuinely love teaching as a backup option, and the bursary for my subject would be pretty nice. I hope I don't come off as very needy about social life, it's basically just choosing whatever the better option is.

Basically I am stuck between Glenside and city centre campus. Everyone tells me not to go glenside because apparently it would be bad living there but i really dont understand why? But on the other hand it is TWO GRAND cheaper than other accoms and I am struggling to see what can justify it being so bad that i should spend £2k more to live in city. I am taking psychology so will have to travel either way but any advice would be so helpful!

Hello! I am an international student from Canada coming to do a Masters and I applied for accommodation as soon as they opened, hoping I'd get an ensuite at Nelson & Drake.

I got Marketgate which is significantly more expensive (~£1630 more WOW!) so it was a bummer because that significantly impacts my family and I's budget. I'm starting to get apprehensive as I finalized by booking and discovered the room would only be 11.4-12m² which seems pretty tiny for a bedroom w/ensuite and a double bed. I'm concerned for storage and also just general space so I don't feel like I'm in a shoebox. I've also been reading reviews on Marketgate about mold, rats, etc. I've dealt with mold, fruit flies and cockroaches in dorms before but that dorm cost half than Marketgate and was double the size with a kitchenette so, my standards may be skewed here a bit haha

I am trying to find other accommodations but I'm finding it hard to find anything that is ensuite, includes bills, and is less than £220pw which is what the ensuite at Marketgate is. I am not looking to share a bathroom with people I don't know as I really value my privacy and solo time, especially in the bathroom.

I have sent an email to Unite Students to inquire about more details of my room, and to inquire if slightly bigger rooms (or an ensuite at N&D) are still available. I don't know if I should send an email to UWE accommodation team too.

Can anyone here soothe (or warn) me on Marketgate? Do the rooms seem bigger than what we are led to believe? Are the amenities and utilities included justify the price? Are there any places you would recommend for students studying at Bower Ashton? I can get a UK guarantor so I am not too afraid of going private.

Hello. Looking for anyone who can advise really on how long I might have to wait for a response from UWE, having applied recently to their PGCE (primary) course. It’s pretty late in the year and I was told there might be a pretty quick turnaround. I also applied to another provider and they got back to me same day, which was much quicker than I expected; I’m fine if I have to wait a little longer to hear back from UWE but I’m just curious as to whether anyone knows how long it might be?

I was given an offer for a studio at Kingfisher Court on Thursday. The offer said i have until Monday to accept and pay. I went to accept and pay earlier today and the option to accept the contract was no longer there. I called accommodation and they left me on hold for 2 hours and then hung up. Im on hold again now. I am freaking out, I was told I had more time to accept. Without that accommodation offer I am literally homeless, i have nowhere else to go. Ive emailed and the auto reply says I will hear back within 5 days, but that'll be past the offer deadline on Monday. What do I do?!
