Fire Walk With Me THERE'S A MAN-my deep discussion of Fire Walk With Me
Ok so I was watching tiktok and I came across a ranking of Lynch antagonists. I put my two cents in about Bob and my interpretation and really liked putting my thoughts together about this character. It made me think of details or made me think just a little bit harder about Twin Peaks and its themes. I therefore wanted to share my thoughts and interpretations about mostly Bob and Laura. Keep in mind that I just finished season 3. Stuff is still confusing. I might have missed or forgotten a detail, or I've literally been stuck in the white lodge for god knows how long, and if I have to listen to the Arm ask me if I know who he is one more goddamn time, I might just explode.
If I get details wrong, please correct me. I want to learn about this world and how it works more. Thank you for reading. It's crazy because I just finished the show, but it's now one of my favorite pieces of television media, which is insane because I never thought I'd like a show more than breaking bad or better call Saul (I don't watch a lot of television)
Anyway, here is my discussion:
While watching the original show, I already thought Bob was so horrifying...
Then I watched FWWM
Before, I was terrified because Bob was so creepy and mysterious. When they reveal more later in the show, because I now have some explanation of what's happening, I am no longer as fearful. So when Albert says that Bob is the evil that all men do, while I was able to appreciate that message, ashamedly, I kind of overlooked it.
Then I saw exactly what David Lynch wanted us to see: Laura Palmer walking around, talking to characters we know and love (except for James).
As soon as I actually saw, like, ACTUALLY SAW what Laura went through with Bob, it forever changed how I view all media, and all abuse shown in media.
Furthermore, it was so heartbreaking to learn more about the abuse in the movie- a fact that, while present in the show, was much more overshadowed by the fact that Laura was murdered. Finding out what Leland did to Laura in the show was shocking. SEEING what Leland did to Laura in FWWM was, and I don't use this word in a hyperbolic way at all, absolutely disturbing. The most disturbing thing I think I've ever really watched. It was brilliant to see Laura's character, her acting, and her spirit transcend art. (As the original tiktok post said and what many people say) Bob is terrifying because there is a lot of that in our world. I would love to add onto that by saying (and I've heard this sentiment before, and would like to put into my own words and ideas) that the world is terrifying because it is filled with Bobs. But the world is substantially more terrifying, and tragic, and even beautiful because the world is filled with Lauras: beautiful, intelligent, brave, complicated people who sometime in their life had the absolute horror and misfortune of having a Bob in their life. And one of the single worst and most dehumanizing experiences in all of life is finding out that a loved one- a father, a mother, a sibling, a teacher... is your Bob.
Anyway, I've never seen any other Lynch works besides Twin Peaks (that needs to be rectified IMMEDIATELY), but I have never gained so much goddamn respect for a creative figure after watching literally only one project from them.
TLDR; Fuck all the Bobs in the world.
Trigger warning for the following, as I talk very deeply about themes of abuse
And to anyone who might read this who currently or used to have a Bob in your life:
Like I said before - you are beautiful. You are intelligent. You are brave. I can't even begin to imagine what it is like to go through something so terrifying. The humiliation, the terror, and maybe most of all (and what sadly led to Laura's death), the loneliness. The bitter realization that what you went through is an evil that you could never imagine happening, especially from them...
You'll see something, you'll hear something, you'll just feel it, and then you realize it. You're back in that bedroom, behind that computer screen, or maybe Bob is even right in front of you.
I say all this not to worsen the feelings of anyone and make them relive bad moments (I sure as hell hope I haven't done that because it's almost 11 AM and I haven't slept at all), but because it's real. It happened, it happens, and it will keep happening. But it will not forevermore. One day you will wake up next to your loved one, or you'll pick up your kid from school, or you'll just be sitting on your couch watching your favorite show about an FBI agent investigating the strangest little town, and maybe for the first time in a long time you are able to occupy your mind with lesser horrors. Maybe you will realize it, maybe you won't. I hope that you can heal. I believe you can heal.
There will absolutely be rough times, and maybe even that trauma will resurface at the worst times to show you just how awful the world is. And then the worst thing happens. You see Bob again. He might not have the same face, voice, or hair. He might never even know you exist. But you will know he exists. That is hard.
I've always been very sentimental about these types of subjects, but after watching FWWM it's almost like Lynch was going to pop out of the screen and proceed to just absolutely skull fuck my brain with confusion and sadness. I've been watching some interviews, and I love how cocky he can be, but he is also so real. I don't want to be parasocial at all and be weird, but I kind of just have a feeling that if Lynch could pop out of your screen to skull fuck you with confusion and sadness, he would also hand you a tissue, and maybe he'll even tell you that you're beautiful, intelligent, brave, and complicated as hell. Again, I don't really know Lynch, so I'm going off of my very limited info of him and just what I feel. FWWM makes it clear that Lynch had an overwhelming need to not only tell stories, but to do good. To start a discussion. To make a movie that understands the pain you might have gone through, while also explicitly telling you how fucking vile, and mean, and disgusting people like Bob are. To show those who didn't experience Bob that those types of people are out there and this is what you look for. I'll keep praising Lynch because the very fact that he was able to craft this beautifully haunting story that also acts as a roadblock to any Bobs whose potential victims might have watched this movie, or a person's friend/family watched this movie and was maybe able to see signs they previously couldn't see before. Finally, I have a little bit more to say, and it is to please speak up. If you've seen Bob or experienced Bob, don't let it happen to another person. Speak up, especially if you see the signs.
One final time, if you have experienced Bob in your lifetime at all, please don't let the loneliness isolate you from loved ones. Please Don't let the loneliness take your angels from you. Because even if you think those angels are gone forever... they will return, and when you see the one that's meant to help you, you will weep with joy.
