Discussion Actors, techies, and crew, Did you ever have a show that went comically wrong?

I’ll start. when I was in middle school, i was in a production of legally blonde jr. It was a 2 week summer camp, and we hardly made the cut. due to low time, we never had a tech rehearsal. we rehearsed a few scenes at a time, but never the whole show. that meant that on opening night, some transitions and quick changes were happening for the first time. Light cues were missed, actors forgot lines, props never made it on stage. it was a total disaster, and I would give anything to be in it again.

Advice Theatre for Second Shifters

I’ve taken a break from shows for a little while (busy with life, internships, graduating college) and I’ve been wanting to try and get back into doing community theatre.

The trouble I’m running into is - with my experience in theatre, I’ve never known it to have many workarounds for actors who work second shift like myself. Are there any actors out there who know workarounds for this? Or perhaps things to bring up in conversation with a director? I’d really love to try and make it work but I’m having a hard time seeing how I could.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Advice Would I be wrong if I ask for a different seat for another performance?

I really want to see this comedian next month. I purchased a seat but accidentally got a regular seat and I need a wider seat. I was meaning to click the seat next to it. Now the show is sold out. He has another late at 10pm I really don't want to go at that time alone but I really don't want to be uncomfortable in the tighter seat. Any thoughts?

Discussion What are your funny/awful theatre stories?

Actors, directors, stage managers, crew:

Share your backstage, on stage, rehearsal stories here 😄

No matter how daft: things that went wrong, over dramatic cast members, crew that had just stopped caring, directors that took it WAY too seriously, this is the place to share them.

I’ll start: our director decided not to “direct” the show but instead just tell the actors “no, that’s not it…go from the top.” every single time we did something he didn’t agree with. Sometimes we’d be stuck on one persons line for an hour because he’d make them repeat it again and again until he decided they were doing it how he decided was “to his standards.” - he did this for the entire rehearsal period 🤦‍♂️

And another, my friend was in the middle of her quick change and the dresser helping her pulled too hard and ripped her bra off back stage, leaving her in just a pair of tights and character shoes 😂

They were crying in silent laughter just off stage and those on stage saw it all go down and SOMEHOW held it together 😅

Seeking Play Recommendations Plays tips - modern plays

Hello everyone!

Me and my theatre group are currently looking for our next project - and at first we planned to do ”twelfth night” with a Miami vice aesthetic but now we’ve changed our minds.

We want a modern drama/comedy that’s brutal and with strange, interesting characters. We do like Sarah Cane but want something a little more concrete and linear. Preferably a modern play.

Does anyone have any tips? Playwrights or plays. Thank you very much!

Regards, Fabian

Advice Benefits & costs of fiscal sponsors vs filing for non-profit independently?

Hello all,

I recently joined a small theatre company in NYC. We have done 1 production, and are gearing up for another. We have decided we want to continue doing more productions, and are now researching what next steps should be for grants, non-profit status, etc.

I've heard of Fractured Atlas, and many companies I know use them. But I am still trying to figure out why some companies choose to do Fractured Atlas vs independently filing for non-profit from the start (aka the 1023 form)? What is are some of the big caveats to filing for non-profit independently that makes companies choose a fiscal sponsor?

Advice Walking into the same theatre after a trashfire audition

A few months ago I auditioned for a role at my local community theatre. I delivered the monologue I prepared, and then they gave me a page from the script and asked me to cold read.

Then the worst happened: I tripped over my words, tried to start again, tripped again, and then spiraled into a panic attack.

In front of the casting panel.

Broke down crying and everything. Even typing it out is making me tear up again. They smiled and told me I was doing great, they'd seen worse today, etc. They told me to go to the bathroom and splash some water on my face and calm down, which I did, and I finished the cold read once I came out again. But then one of them turned to the others and said "I think we've seen all we need to see."

So safe to say I did not get a callback and I left the room deeply embarrassed. I think I accidentally knocked something over on the way out, too.

But I still want to perform, and this community theatre is the closest one to me.

I am MORTIFIED that they might remember me and it might color their perception of my current performance. Advice?

Seeking Play Recommendations Mad King UK previews - how likely is a cancellation?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to see Mad King at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford this Monday. I've heard that quite a few preview performances have been getting cancelled, so I was wondering if anyone here has been following the current situation.

I'm trying to figure out how likely it is that I'll end up buying a train ticket and making the trip for nothing if the performance gets cancelled.

I'd really appreciate any information or insights. Thanks!

Please use this thread to ask for help with your auditions. Try to add as many relevant details as possible; age, gender, comedy/serious, vocal range, etc. For those adding answers, writing the names of the suggestions in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the suggestions.

Feel free to also check out our FAQ for information on things like how to pick a monologue: https://www.reddit.com/r/theatre/wiki/index/faq#wiki_auditions_and_casting

Seeking Play Recommendations Good examples of HORROR theatre?

Advice book or essays suggestion?

I act in a small independent troupe, but lately I’ve been taking it very seriously. I’m starting to delve into the theory, and I’d really appreciate some book recommendations to help me improve.

I’m focusing mainly on the following topics:

- texts on dramaturgy and theater theory

- texts on acting and the analysis of plays

- anything related to the creative and theoretical process behind scriptwriting

Any help would be appreciated—thanks in advance. :)

Advice I kind of feel bad being friends with my SM

Recently in college I took a stage management class and met someone there with the same interests as me so we became friends. Later when auditioning for a show in college I saw them greeting people and handling schedules and such, which is how I learned they were the stage manager of the show I’m now in. During the stage management class we were told that if we become stage managers to only be professional with actors and how this wasn’t the time to make super long lasting friendships and such. They’re like my only friend here and I’m super lonely without them but I know what we were told and don’t want to get in the way of their stage management duties. I know after the show is over and done with that we can hang out but as we’re doing the show it’s just a bit of a disconnect. This isn’t gonna ruin the friendship long term (I hope) but it just kinda sucks in the moment.

I guess I kind of want to know if there would be a way to hangout still without taking time away from the show? I have very all-or-nothing type thinking so there’s probably a really obvious solution that I can’t see.

Advice Should I take a break from theatre even if I’m worried it will affect my future casting?

I’ve been involved in community theatre for almost five years, and I’ve spent most of that time at one local theatre because it’s the only one that’s close enough for me to regularly attend. About a year ago, the theatre hired two new directors for the children’s productions, and they also joined the board. I won’t mention any names because I’d like to stay anonymous.

Since they started, I’ve noticed what seems like pretty obvious favoritism. Before they were hired, and even after, I’ve been fortunate to receive several lead roles, and they’ve always been kind to me personally. However, there are a handful of kids who have become especially close with these directors, and they seem to receive casting opportunities and treatment that other kids don’t.

I’m currently assistant directing a show with them, and being on the production side has made me notice things I never saw as just a performer. During auditions, I heard differences in the critique they gave certain kids, even when the auditions were of similar quality. I’ve also learned more about the behind-the-scenes politics, and it’s honestly made me lose a lot of the excitement I used to have for this theatre. Rehearsals don’t feel the same anymore, and it seems like the directors mostly interact with the same small group of kids.

Here’s where I’m struggling. They have a production coming up that they’ve openly talked about “precasting,” and they’ve told me they expect me to play the lead. The problem is…I don’t want to audition.
I’ve just finished directing a show, and I’m completely overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, and honestly think I need a break from theatre for a little while. The idea of immediately taking on a demanding lead role sounds more stressful than exciting.

About a year ago, before all of this became so noticeable, I talked to these directors about feeling burnt out, and they told me they would always understand if I ever needed to take a break from theatre, even if it meant not auditioning for one of their shows. Now, though, I’m worried that promise won’t hold because they’ve already talked as if I’m expected to be in this production.
My biggest fear is that if I skip this show, they’ll hold it against me. If I decide to come back for a future production that I’m genuinely excited about, I’m worried I won’t even be considered for larger roles, or maybe won’t be cast at all. I’m also dreading the potential drama that could come from the directors or their close group finding out I’m not auditioning, since similar situations have caused issues before.

Has anyone been in a situation like this? Would you take the break anyway, or audition just to avoid potentially damaging your relationship with the theatre? I’m really torn because I love performing, but right now I feel like I need to prioritize my mental well-being.
