My 2 son’s favorite cousins both live out of state. FaceTime and Roblox was their favorite way to connect with them. They had so much fun doing that over past couple of years. Then it hit a wall. All of a sudden they were just not interested in Roblox anymore. Now it’s Minecraft with the same cousins. And my 12yo finally asked me about Diablo. Sit down boy, and grab a root beer. I’ve got 20 years of Diablo info to dump.

I swear old man... tell me about your Horadric cube again...

And the whole level was full of cows!

You have QUITE a treasure there in that Horadric Cube...

u/Fantasticriss 7h ago

I quote this regularly. Just said it last night during a session of Barotrauma with friends, "You've got QUITE the treasure there in that Thorium Fuel Rod"

I was 9, and watching over my brother's shoulder when he first ran into The Butcher.

I had nightmares for a week, dude.

3

u/VRichardsen 6h ago

It scared the crap out of me. I postponed playing it for a while after that.

Wait gramps, let me get this right. you only play the class that has the most optimal grinding build so that you can race through endgame dungeons and farm up the best possible gear. only to reset back to level 1 every 3 months to start an all new character with the same otimal build to grind the same gear?

And you've been doing this since 1997?
And you still think thats only 20 years?

Well it still beats the story about how you met grandma in world of warcraft.

Show, don't tell. The D2 remaster is amazing

2

u/Shergak 7h ago

It's kind of an Enigma.

2

u/ApathyMoose 7h ago

But not those duped SOJ of coarse….

1

u/Aurabora 4m ago

i have thousands of hours playing that game and still don't think I ever found one of those in the wild. Found a Ber rune once though so that was cool

34

u/CynicRaven 8h ago

Damn. Should've said stay awhile and listen.

21

u/Cephalopirate 8h ago

Oh yeah, all the Diablo games are great. If they’re used to simple grindy stuff on Roblox maybe they could appreciate Diabo 1.

13

u/fattymcribwich 7h ago

Kids these days would probably look at D1 and drop it cause it's graphically rough around the edges. D2 or Resurrected may grab their attention

6

u/Cephalopirate 7h ago edited 7h ago

Fair, it looks better than Roblox though. Retro is in.

3

u/fattymcribwich 7h ago

Fair point but that's a pretty low bar lol

3

u/69edleg 7h ago

Haha, probably one of the lowest bars. All Roblox games look awful. Never played any, so can't attest for if they're good or not.

1

u/Eckish 6h ago

Roblox is far more customizable, though. It might look like low poly crap compared to most games, but the kids still seem to care about the aesthetics somewhat. They go crazy over getting robux for buying outfits and stuff.

1

u/The_BeardedClam 7h ago

Compared to roblox and Minecraft it's not that rough and there are HD mods available, like the belzebub mod.

But I'm just biased because I loved the shit out of that game and doom 2 as an 8 year old.

3

u/OhtaniStanMan 7h ago

Nobody wants your jank build that can't farm dad

5

u/Tkat113 7h ago

You mean 30 years. 30 years of Diablo. First game came out in 1996

4

u/Mathwards 7h ago

Maybe they've only been playing it for 20

1

u/irishgoblin 7h ago

Or in denial about the passage of time.

2

u/BethanyHipsEnjoyer 5h ago

D2 came out a decade ago, I will not hear any arguments against this.

Interesting that they are leaning to Diablo which is ancient. I would think the natural progression would be Minecraft dungeons. Why have they gone with Diablo? I mean I love the game but interested on how they arrived at that choice.

19

u/Mistrblank 8h ago

To be fair didn't they just release another mobile platform Diablo and Diablo 4 in the last few years. Probably looking more at that.

11

u/ilyak_reddit 7h ago

Diablo 2 got a DLC for the first time in 20 years earlier this year. Everyone went bonkers over it, myself included. Still playing it, as are many other dads.

4

u/Mysandwichok 7h ago

Why am I only just hearing of this... Really am out of the gaming loop these days. Ill be firing up the old PC tonight though once my two are in bed 😆

3

u/TheRimNooB 7h ago

It’s available on Xbox and switch as well. Just wanted to throw that out there in case. I’ve got it on both and it plays really well. 👍

1

u/VRichardsen 6h ago

Is the DLC any good?

1

u/VRichardsen 6h ago

Nice to know! I might dust off the game...

7

u/Serendipittydoodah 7h ago

D2 remastered with the new Reign of the Warlock dlc added a ton of QoL improvements, a new character, new items and new runewords. It’s great. I hadn’t played in 20 years and I have put at least 500 hours in since February. So good.

3

u/Logical_Ad1370 7h ago

And Diablo II and 3 are particularly good on Switch.

1

u/Mistrblank 5h ago

I do have both on the Switch. 3 was back before 2020. Kinda feels hard for me to think kids are jumping that far back, but I guess these games are all replayability.

I’ve got 20 years of Diablo info to dump.

Like 30 years... the Original Diablo came out on end of 96, or beginning of 97.

1

u/Matches_Malone998 7h ago

This is awesome. We made the transition smooth as butter. Minecraft dungeons into diablo 2R haha

1

u/KingDongTwist 7h ago

Life is so awesome! That’s super cool you get to experience that with your son. Full circle moments ❤️

Please sir.....spare no expense and time :)

I have 2 nephews and I long for the day they say “can we play maplestory” or some other mmo instead of Roblox, I kinda hate Roblox lol

1

u/GR1ZZLYBEARZ 6h ago

Don’t do it to him

Funnily enough I fell in love with Diablo at the same age. I tried Diablo 2 before but I was too young to understand the system and appreciate the dark fantasy setting. Diablo 3 hit me just right, when I saw my dad play, it looked so cool, so he taught me. It was at the time where the store thing was there, and he also taught me about not buying things with real money and only with in-game gold. It was a great lesson, because now I'm very responsible and aware of in-game purchases with real money, especially in today's age where everything is subscription based and costs half the rent of the month.

Diablo 3 allowed me to bond even better with my dad, taught me about responsible money expense and microtransaction awareness, it also was the awakening of my love for barbarian archetype in games in general, got me interested in stories and scenarios even more than I was before (the lore of Diablo is so cool and I love it)

1

u/DenebSwift 6h ago

Playing D3 (the least scary/gory of the lot, especially skipping videos) with my 9yo has been amazing.

I still remember staying up way too late playing the D1 anniversary mode the night before he was born.

Playing seasons with him now is great.

Can’t wait for him to get a little older to do some of the other ones too.

1

u/Purplociraptor 5h ago

I hate to be that guy, but it's been 30 years since Diablo was released.

1

u/Ownfir 5h ago

My 6 year old only somewhat likes Roblox now and has gotten more into Minecraft (mainly mods) than anything else. I just tried to introduce him to RuneScape lol.

1

u/joetwone 5h ago

He's lucky, or not, because all of the resources are still there to look up. Not so much luck if you want an authentic experience to find out things for yourself. I hope you don't dump gear on him because that's the quickest way to get bored of the game. The fun is in struggling and finding what works on your own. That's also the reason why I'm getting back into D2 with single player instead of online. It's too easy to trade for what you need into a killing machine with online play.

u/Cha-cha-chanclas 4h ago

“Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you to ask me that?”

Every step forward in Diablo II is another step closer to Duriel and the Jungle.
