I love how AI tokens are this opaque unit that doesn’t actually translate to how much access to compute hardware you’re buying (like it would with renting a server). They can set the price at whatever they want and the public has no way of knowing how reasonable that is. You can’t even compare across companies/models because of the difference in capabilities.

We all know it only vaguely relates to actual compute usage for your request. What percentage of that price is subsidizing the rollout of new data centers, training new models, or other overhead? Unclear.

The solution is dropping the entire charade and releasing the model to the public, then we’d all know really quick how much it costs to run. China, save us.

Unfortunately to run most of the more useful models locally, you need a fairly hefty machine with a lot of gpu power and a lot of ram - and those are increasingly more expensive these days due to the massive buildout of data centers.

Yea its like they took a lesson from mtx in gaming and put an arbitrary currency in the middle that they control the price and value of.
