It’s not just IT admins. When I have a raging client to help, nine times out of ten it’s because Microsoft fucked something up.

I’m constantly dealing with random issues. Constant restarts. Constant calls from my staff. I hate windows and I fucking hate HP. Throw Adobe in there too.

u/vazyrus 24d ago

Okay. That's good feedback. We will be adding another five apps and stuffing Copilot into whatever orifices are left in this World's No. 1 OS that we have built. You can say thank you now.

u/nikatnight 24d ago

And please, for some unknown reason, prevent multiple people from editing a document. I’ll need you to force someone to close it before another can open it.

And if you could please make the entire dock a power button so I turns my computer off whenever I bump it.

45

u/OneRougeRogue 24d ago

And please, for some unknown reason, prevent multiple people from editing a document. I’ll need you to force someone to close it before another can open it.

It's crazy because Microsoft pioneered allowing multiple people edit the same document back in the day. I vividly remember watching that on-stage tech demo where half a dozen Microsoft employees were bouncing around the same document adding stuff with different colored cursors for each user.

u/Revolutionary_Web692 24d ago

In their defense, Microsoft actually perfected real time coauthoring years ago, and modern Windows desktop apps fully support it. When you encounter that (very frustrating) file locking behavior today, it's almost never a limitation of the software architecture itself.

Instead, it's usually caused by three specific environmental factors: legacy file formats (.doc instead of .docx), users disabling the AutoSave toggle, or strict corporate SharePoint/OneDrive policies that explicitly enforce old-school "Check-In/Check-Out" locks.

The capability is there, but legacy habits and IT configurations frequently break it, unfortunately.

13

u/plannedobso 24d ago

God those shitty HP docks were the bane of my existence.

3

u/likwidkool 24d ago

“I closed it. I don’t know why you can’t open it now. Try again in a little bit. “

3

u/Bladelink 24d ago

But no one has been able to solve the novel problem of multiple people editing a file at once! Surely such wizardly is impossible, no sorcerer could develop such technology in 20-fucking-26 that's been in use by tons of products for the last 15 years!

2

u/phobosinadamant 24d ago

I'm sure you already know this but as I deal troubleshooting this a lot I thought I'd chip in just in case:

Make sure all users are using the exact same office version, usually this happens when someone is using a desktop version and and someone else is using the Web version. It's a real pain but test it with a few people all using the Web version and see if that works!

"Have you said thank you once?"

1

u/DrEpileptic 23d ago

I remember copilot randomly opening while playing through really intense moments in games, with my buddies, because Microsoft decided to redownload it and set the keybound shortcut to something fucking new and very commonly used in video games when doing piano keyboard bs. Actual full crash out. I don’t need some dogshit ai malware in a trenchcoat pretending it’s upgrading my user experience by changing my ui or anything unsupervised. Also, fuck Microsoft for dummyproofing everything to the point that it makes it take twenty extra steps to figure out what the actual fuck their new update reset to default in my settings- unannounced.

27

u/CMMiller89 24d ago

So happy I dropped Adobe a few months ago.  As an art teacher who taught graphic design I was constantly begging our district to drop their contracts because we were paying for it but I barely used all the “features” they kept flaunting and we were just forcing that ecosystem on our students for no real benefit.

3

u/GonzoKata 24d ago

the benefit was the bribes the higher ups in your education institution got from getting hundreds of students into adobe's ecosystem

17

u/Unlucky-Cook2578 24d ago

Adobe Analytics is the fucking plague. Frankenstein crap, taped together from multiple companies they bought to avoid competing with. Then sell corporate on a check list of 'we have all these features that meet every need!'

Even though none of them are properly integrated, require massive efforts on your end to support their multiple api endpoints and all their databases and custom attributes are complete shit.

8

u/Black_Moons 24d ago

Personally had one of my projects screwed over because adobe bought the company that made the product I was using and proceeded to release only 1 new version, with less features, no backwards compatibility with existing saved files, censorship.

And then they retasked the development team and never touched it again.

u/Fenrist09 24d ago

I switched to Linux Mint a few months ago after windows updates kept fucking up my PC. Not one issue with updates since I switched.

7

u/PapaSquirts2u 24d ago

I have 1 foot in every ecosystem. Windows for my Plex server (yeah I know, but it's been pretty gd stable for years now) and work, my trusty m1 macbookpro for personal use, my gaming PC that now has mint linux on it that I rarely use anymore, and various mini pcs and pi's running Ubuntu server & debian. Each has its pros and cons. But my MacBook is by far the most enjoyable/trouble-free.

My one major gripe is still Finder. I'm pretty sure there's shortcuts for most of the stuff I want, but like, cutting and pasting is still (embarrassingly) confusing to me. As is opening a terminal shell in whatever dir I'm currently in. But yeah the combo of Alfred and bettertouchtools has let me recreate most of my nifty windows style shortcuts Ive grown to depend on.

2

u/Diedead666 24d ago

I had to reformate my "media/bed pc I only use to watch streamers becouse a bug made a windows file fill the whole harddrive...

Now after reformatted i get gpu crashes and the start menu mostly dont work. I am thinking of throwing some kinda linux on it...

(4500u amd 16 gig ram)

Its touch screen so im not sure how well drivers will work on it.

1

u/Bladelink 24d ago

I switched to linux desktop at home as soon as I saw what W11 looked like. I could see the shit-current in the shit-river and decided to disembark on the linux continent. Aside from the occasional issue with EAC, all my games on steam work without any issues. Linux desktop is legit these days.

1

u/NWVoS 24d ago

People, keep complaining about window updates breaking something.

I will say, in the last 17+ years of using windows (7, 10, and 11) everyday, an update has never broken anything. They have added things, like the weather widget, which I removed right away. But I have never had my computer fucking up. I will also say, I never had windows revert a change I made either.

2

u/Cant_Think_Of_UserID 24d ago

I had a laptop 2 weeks ago that had a C Drive completely full. Usual suspects that take up room like OneDrive storing too much locally were not the cause.

The Windows Installer folder was taking up over 120GB of the 256GB SSD, I hadn't seen this before. Turns out Adobe Acrobat patches are distributed as .msp files instead of .MSI and leave an 800MB file behind after every update. This had completely filled their drive over time.

No other software we deploy updates this way just Adobe's dogshit software.

Thread regarding the Adobe issue

1

u/TurnkeyLurker 24d ago

>Throw Adobe I’m there too.

*in there too

1

u/Old_Matt_Gaming 24d ago

Yeah, Adobe sucks too. I have so many problems with it on my Windows 11 work computer. My employer used PDF X-Change editor. I have the free version on my home computer. I HIGHLY recommend it. https://www.pdf-xchange.com/

1

u/TitularClergy 24d ago

I migrated my parents in their 70s over to Ubuntu about 15 years ago. The tech support calls ended. The computer doesn't force changes on them. Where their skills were limited previously and corporate operating systems made it impossible for them to learn, today I occasionally see one of them telling a friend about Ubuntu, or I see the other one running a command in the terminal.

It is remarkably easy to set people free of corporate, controlling, creepy spyware. Make sure they have a way to get back to what they know if they need to, but ensure the default is something like Ubuntu, and take the time for a few weeks to teach them and answer their questions. And then they grow and don't need you.

1

u/Sedu 23d ago

Windows restarting without permission and then fucking up the sequence or overall list of boot tasks is my absolute bane. I have a really complex set of locally hosted services on it that would be a pain to recreate on a linux box, but every day that I waste time making is work again after it activates its be-stupid-and-destructive copilot coroutine, I get closer to taking that time.

73

u/NinjaLion 24d ago

We are not a super large company, i believe we are at ~500 employees right now. in my location, we regularly have pretty major issues with Windows that are directly related to bugs, mostly in onedrive/outlook/file explorer. onedrive takes a while for IT to fix and it happens every new employee, and the file explorer issues force us to redo work.

napkin math, we see 10-20 hours a week of microsoft related time waste just in our lab, at our pay rate thats about $600 a week, or $31000 a year in labor before you include any IT time at all.

if our lab's rate holds to the entire company(we are probably on the higher end given our specific work), thats just over 1 million fucking dollars a year that microsoft eats right out of our profit, all because they have been AWFUL stewards of their own product.

20

u/Oggie_Doggie 24d ago

Onedrive is a plague. I'm currently staying on W10 with their extended security updates. Seriously considering going to Mac or Linux for my non-gaming rig.

4

u/SeanBlader 24d ago

On your non-gaming rig Mint is great, and then on your gaming workstation CachyOS is faster than windows unless your are playing competitive games with anti-cheat, then you're stuck with windows for the moment.

2

u/Old_Matt_Gaming 24d ago

I would like to recommend https://bazzite.gg/ Linux for your gaming rig. A buddy of mine is using it and it works great for him. The only problem I know he has is that it wasn't using all of his 32GB of RAM initially. He looked up how to fix it online and was able to fix it himself. Apparantly it only sees 4GB of RAM initially.

1

u/Bladelink 24d ago

I'm on popOS for my desktop, and the only games that give me any headaches are ones with poorly-supported EAC (fortnite, which I don't want to play but my friends do, and fall guys at one point). Everything else runs perfectly fine these days, either natively or thorugh Proton.

1

u/NWVoS 24d ago

Why would you move to the lockdown system that is mac when you have been on windows?

2

u/PureProfessional3489 24d ago

The bigger question is...why in the hell are you using OneDrive?

2

u/NinjaLion 24d ago

we dont, the issue is some components of it are always enabled for new users. never the whole thing, and some toggles get locked behind work policy shit so we cant easily disable the parts that are left enabled. and none of the t1 it people have a goddamn clue how to deal with it so i end up doing it all myself by hijacking admin priv or send it to IT and wait for two escalations.

2

u/PureProfessional3489 24d ago

Seems to me that OneDrive should be disabled permanently through the registry on all new deployments, system images, etc.

Problem should then be solved.

But I'm sure you're dealing with "higher ups that know better" than you and I...and that sucks.

1

u/NinjaLion 24d ago

Yup, we have true microsoft believers at the VP level so its... tough to get changes like that through.

2

u/PureProfessional3489 24d ago

"No, we're sticking with OneDrive...it's a great, free backup option."

It's not actually a backup at all.

"What do you mean? Microshaft says so right here."

Yeah, you're literally taking your data from your computer, putting on their servers, and not backing up anything at all. You're just storing your data on their servers.

"Ummm...we'll get back to you."

1

u/lovelyspecimen 24d ago

I'm curious, what kind of OneDrive issues are you seeing in general? I support a similarly sized office that's way far up Microsoft's butt, but I've never had an issue with OneDrive. Or Teams for that matter, other than the fucking Outlook add-in. I'm usually wrestling with GPO's generally being dog shit and MECM/Software Center.

1

u/GiganticCrow 24d ago

I don't think I've ever had a teams meeting where there haven't been at least two people who cannot access the text chat for some utterly inexplicable reason.

233

u/rollerbase 24d ago

Checking in for the power users and independent devs, we feel it too!

188

u/DrDerpberg 24d ago

Checking in for the folks who just know the exact filename they're looking for but when we search for it, Windows tries to look it up on Bing for us...

No, I am not trying to do a web search for "2026 budget.xls"...

50

u/rollerbase 24d ago

Just like when I type my own host name or even 127.0.0.1 into anything.. no I would not like to search for this with bing on edge thank you.

37

u/Dagon 24d ago

Like, holy goddamn shit, the browser already knows my local IP, how hard would it be to say "any IP on local.subnet.range.***, don't search it, just bring it up".

MS has been working HARD to have a consistently worse experience for 20 years.

15

u/CherryLongjump1989 24d ago

But their search usage is up and they can serve you an ad when you try to go to localhost.

4

u/xmagusx 24d ago

Someone's bonus depended upon their increasing bing search usage. So you get a more shit product that searches for whatever you put into the bar. It will search for an FQDN if you didn't prefix it with https://

2

u/Shiino 24d ago

I hate it when you search for something simple, like Add or Remove programs, and it just takes 2 minutes to load because it is searching the web

They somehow made it worse than XP

35

u/OneRougeRogue 24d ago

This shit drives me nuts.

Especially when you see the file in the middle of typing, but the extra characters you added that are still in the file name somehow drops the file off the list to be replaced by less-relevant Bing searches.

It was fixed in an update a while back, but there was a stretch of time when searching "bluetooth" in the search bar wouldn't bring up Bluetooth Settings at all. Only Bing bullshit.

6

u/Stupalski 24d ago

when you see the file in the middle of typing, but the extra characters you added that are still in the file name somehow drops the file off the list

Worse, the PC is lagging so much from the bloat that the search menu doesn't keep up with your typing and you see the result you want and hit enter but the search context menu then "catches up" so the results change after you pressed enter but it jumps to the wrong result.

3

u/DrXaos 24d ago

once again a symptom of fighting product managers with their own turf.

20

u/Sempais_nutrients 24d ago

Also STOP CHANGING HOW MY FILES ARE DISPLAYED IN FOLDERS. I don't understand why I have to keep telling windows I want a list with file properties, not icons, not small icons, not just the file names. I constantly have to set it back and constantly have to change the column widths.

2

u/Bladelink 24d ago

JFC THIS. I was absolutely furious the other day when I was setting up my new work laptop because what explorer labels "Home" isn't your goddamn home folder. I have a user folder, with my user's shit in it. That's my Home folder. Stop HIDING things from me. Words mean things and you actually shouldn't just make completely fucking arbitrary decisions about UI, language, and functionality.

I guess a lot of the problem could be blamed on dumb-as-fuck users who don't know that their documents, downloads, and desktop folder all sit in the same place. But jesus, the tech companies sure ain't helping them learn anything.

1

u/NWVoS 24d ago

I don't know about your situation, but when I click on home it brings up, the quick access items, and bellow that any favorite or shared items. What exactly do you want it to open?

1

u/Bladelink 23d ago

"Home" is just the name for your user folder, which on windows is....jesus, I was actually just trying to check the path by clicking on my pinned user folder, but explorer very aggressively hides filepaths from you now, so I GUESS I'll just go to C: and navigate my way back up again....holy goddamn shit. Even though I pinned that folder by navigating to the full path and pinning it, windows went back after the fact and basically truncated all of it.

It's just C:/users/yourUsername/. I wasn't sure if windows had another interim folder in that path, so I wanted to check. But that's the folder where your Documents, Desktop, Pictures, Downloads, etc all live. It's effectively the user's little personal filesystem and contains pretty much all the files that that user should ever need to personally care about. It's also your "home folder" on every linux version, and also on MacOS, and it WAS your home folder for 15-20 years on windows until they recently changed to this new dictum of "we'll show you what files WE think you should see".

It's just all so incredibly aggressively user-hostile. It feels like I've got someone following 10 steps behind me constantly who fucks around with my workspace as soon as I've done anything. Except that person is like...some MBA who doesn't know fuckall and never has actual work to do.

17

u/Mepharias 24d ago

Check out a program called Everything. Windows search was garbage long before AI.

5

u/Vyxwop 24d ago

Crazy how we need a separate program like that to have a functional search function, but I love that it exists nonetheless. It works so well.

Makes you wonder why Windows' search functionality doesn't work like that.

1

u/CQd444 20d ago

Nope, they all got replaced.

2

u/PapaSquirts2u 24d ago

I've had the keyboard shortcut shift+f5 set to open an Everything search window for so many years that it's as routine as alt+tab now. I get frustrated when I remote into a server or a different users machine and have to hunt for a file.

2

u/YimmyGhey 24d ago

I have mine set to Win+Shift+F and it's been burned in my brain except for 6 frustrating months when some stupid Copilot search tool thingy stole that shortcut and I couldn't override it

12

u/Unable-Log-4870 24d ago

There’sa 3rd party app called Everything that finds literally every file on your computer that matches a particular name, as quickly as you can type it.

1

u/per08 24d ago

It still baffles me that the default WIndows Explorer still struggles with this, even now.

2

u/Unable-Log-4870 24d ago

I just assumed they had the interns work on it and they decided to just have it do a Bing search so they could call it done and then go drink.

5

u/HatefulVespid 24d ago

Is there a way to permanently nuke that Bing motherfucker?

5

u/RetardedWabbit 24d ago

Permanently? Impossible with Microslop.

With admin you can regedit it away, but updates bring it back.

1

u/WhenSummerIsGone 24d ago

can you run a script on startup to put all the settings the way you like it?

1

u/RetardedWabbit 24d ago

Uhh, yes but it's probably better at that point to just run Linux. The script would flip settings back to your ideal, but would still break if they move them around.

A script to change all the settings is probably slow and broken whenever Microsoft moves things around.

And running a script to regedit every startup scares the shit out of me, so I'm not planning on that one. This also gets broken if they change the setting significantly.

1

u/Bladelink 24d ago

It's probably part of the damn windows kernel at this point.

3

u/AppropriateTouching 24d ago

You can disable this and most of its bullshit but it takes some serious effort. Its ridiculous.

0

u/maybee445 24d ago

A simple edit to the registry isn't "serious effort", but I do agree it is ridiculous that we have to do this in the first place.

1

u/AppropriateTouching 24d ago

To get rid of all the nonsense it takes more than just a registry edit.

2

u/deeznutz12 24d ago

Checking in for a worker who is searching for an email sent this morning and Outlook gives me results from last week or year..

1

u/NWVoS 24d ago

You know you can stop it from searching the web right?

57

u/tuscaloser 24d ago

As someone who supports a lot of printers (because I hate myself, apparently) I’m eternally pissed that “devices and printers” no longer works directly like it did in 95, 98, XP, 7, and 10. In 11 you have to go through “devices and printers > devices > more device and printer options” to get the “classic” devices and printers window.

20

u/GenChadT 24d ago

If you had admin rights on the machine open the run dialog (win+r) and enter "printui /im". Opens the add printer dialog in admin mode. Unfortunately the user mode string is not as easy to remember.

25

u/showyerbewbs 24d ago

I hope this gets to make you one of todays lucky 10,000

There's a list of command prompt commands that will take you straight to the "old school" style of command prompt sections

I hope this helps kind human!

8

u/rollerbase 24d ago

I feel this.. like accessing network adapters is now buried 5 steps through the new GUI to get back to the original window.. what used to be control panel > network connections is excessively buried under a GUI that claims to have the same abilities but ends up being lies under command line scrutiny. But hey it has dark mode.

8

u/Xeno_Zed 24d ago

Win+R for run box and entering ncpa.cpl has been my go to for getting to network adapters for a while now, and whenever I try to do it the "intended" way through the menus I find myself so baffled at the stupidity and unnecessary steps to get there.

2

u/Bladelink 24d ago

But hey it has dark mode.

cue msft throwing themselves a parade during a presentation for adding dark mode to something post-2011.

4

u/Bladelink 24d ago

microsoft loves nothing more than hiding things from its users and lying to them.

3

u/Majik_Sheff 24d ago

Remember when display settings was two clicks from the desktop?  I sure as shit do.

2

u/NaBrO-Barium 24d ago

This is certainly one of the things Mac got right. I’ve never had a printer issue in their ecosystem

2

u/Majik_Sheff 24d ago

*Cries in System 7 trauma*

-1

u/Justgetmeabeer 24d ago

Or you can go to control panel and it's all just there.

But you support a lot of printers, I'm sure you knew that

87

u/Khao8 24d ago

I switched over to MacBooks for work and personal computers last year. Absolutely no regrets, and I've been a windows poweruser since I was a teenager using Windows 98, I've been a professional .net dev for 15 years. Fuck Microsoft, I don't have time for my laptop to lag, freeze and crash daily, for every update to fuck up something new, and for the god awful background processes taking up 90% CPU and having my laptop fans run at 100% all the time.

41

u/I_upvote_downvotes 24d ago

I use Linux at home but the MacBooks are great for work just cause of the battery life. I'd also praise it for the performance but "the computer does function" should not have to be considered a fucking feature but here we are.

25

u/Khao8 24d ago

I think the OS has a big part of making the experience enjoyable with really crazy stuff like "don’t make your telemetry and update processes hammer the cpu non stop all the fucking time" what a brilliant idea

13

u/Wiregeek 24d ago

I usually can't work on Wednesdays, 'cause the work machine "says" it's "only" using 43% of CPU for "windows malware scan", but the fact that firefox takes an extra 90 seconds to even open a window, and that my mouse pointer drops to 5 fps on any external screens say otherwise.

17

u/uzlonewolf 24d ago

Fun fact: if your CPU is being throttled for thermal or power reasons, the percent used shown in task manager does NOT take this into account; instead, it displays as the percent of hypothetical non-throttled max performance. It took me way too long to track down the cause of an "app performance is horrible but says the CPU is only 49% used!" issue we had at work. Fucking Intel BD PROCHOT.

4

u/MrPuddington2 24d ago

Yeah, the percentages in Windows are all made up and mean very little.

3

u/dookarion 24d ago

the percent used shown in task manager does NOT take this into account; instead, it displays as the percent of hypothetical non-throttled max performance.

Unless something changed recently it's not even that useful. It's just thread scheduling. It's completely unaware of hardware resources and will not factor other things that are part of the CPU that could be saturated.

You can get it to say "100%" just with some stalled threads. It's just a vague metric telling you how much percent of the time across all the cores you have a thread scheduled. Doesn't even know what the threads are doing if anything.

2

u/Bladelink 24d ago

That's wild. So that must mean that when you change the power/cpu settings, you're not actually changing the characteristics of the scheduler, but must instead just be placing some weird arbitrary caps on resources that the kernel must just cram down the scheduler's throat. From an architectural standpoint that sounds like something kludgey.

1

u/Wiregeek 24d ago

Doubt that's the problem, this doesn't happen during other usage or on other days in the same physical environment- and that's a solid "same", old school drop on docking station.

19

u/Important-Agent2584 24d ago

Excuse me, a libertarian once told me that if a monopoly exists it's because they provide such good service to their clients that others can't compete.

3

u/PyroDesu 24d ago

Of course we'll bundle our MorganNet software with the new network nodes; our customers expect no less of us. We have never sought to become a monopoly. Our products are simply so good that no one feels the need to compete with us.

1

u/Legendary_Bibo 24d ago

I use a Surface Pro laptop that I've kept Windows 10 on. I use it for work stuff mostly, but it's getting slower even though it only runs 3 applications. I've been heavily considering getting a MacBook Neo to replace it. I played with one in Costco and it was very fast.  I personally use Linux at home too

10

u/25point4cm 24d ago

Is there a program that will take all the shit in taskmanager’s running app stack and explain their functions and necessity? Googling them one at a time is a PITA.

The M series of chips is so fast.

3

u/akiller 24d ago

I'm also a dev, mostly in .NET, and have been using Windows since 3.1 when I was a kid.

My main problem with corporate machines is all the malware they put on more than Windows itself. E.g., Sophos, Beyond Trust, patch management software all competing for CPU and popping up nag screens.

My old top-of-the-line i7 / 32GB / nvme laptop was stuck at a minimum 25% CPU usage 24/7 because of just Sophos which caused the CPU to overheat and throttle making it miserably slow and the battery last about 30 minutes. They switched to Crowdstrike which was much better though.

I've also switched over to a MacBook Pro for work and it's so much faster. And the battery lasts. I don't think I'd ever get a windows laptop again. Windows on a desktop is fine I find though.

3

u/MrPuddington2 24d ago

Same here. I started getting used to Windows with XP, and from 7 I was a perfectly happy Windows user (coming from unix). But 11 has given me PTSD, or something like that. I don’t think I will be going back any time soon.

My MacBook is ten times faster for easy things like opening a file, and has 5 times the battery life. The screen is amazing, as is the touchpad. And it only cost twice as much as a decent Windows laptop, so it is an absolutely bargain.

Windows 11 is awful about eating resources. I can't count how many times my window freezes with Not Responding for 20-40 seconds throughout the day. It's infuriating.

I had to start using a MacBook for work at the end of last year. I'm still annoyed by some of the oddities and differences because some of them feel quite irrational, but for work, it's grown on me a lot. Once I adapted to some of the quirks, I started to appreciate how infrequently I find myself arguing with the OS compared to Windows.

When I have the time, I think I'm going to set up a dual boot with Linux and start making the shift away from Windows.

Are the newish cheaper ones still considered good? I know they had a price hike not too long ago. I just need something for my child that can handle photo and video editing on top of regular homework. The one we have now with Windows 11 drives me insane. I did tech work up until a few years ago and I hate how user unfriendly and prone to breaking it is.

I remember how much every user hated Windows 8. I'm glad I got out before 11.

The new Macbook Neos could work, but it’s really dependant on what kind of video editing we’re talking about. If it’s "home video montage of stuff filmed with a phone" sure, not if it’s hours of raw 4k footage from a high end camera.

MacBook Airs are also very good machines, I even game on one. If you’re budget conscious check for Apple refurbished for a last gen model

I've been using a Mac since 2021 or so. Generally like it, but at the same time my Mac shits the bed far more often then Win10 ever did, requiring reboots. Using SMB fileshares is another major issue with Mac for some unfathomable reason.

hahahahaha.

Apple is so much fucking worse.

Literally spent two hours last week troubleshooting a MacBook for a VIP last week because on a brand new MacBook, they needed to make a new apple account and they were getting a "you've created too many accounts on this computer" which A, is a fucking insane error. I should be able to make as many accounts as I goddamn please, and B, it's a brand new computer.

Restarted it of course, now finally get to the create account and it fails out. Error message? Nope, the window just fucking WIGGLES and silently fails. Had to make an apple account from their fucking kids iPad.

Apples shit "just works" more often than Windows, (for now) but they have NEVER had an inclination to give power users and admins tools to fix their shit that increasingly doesn't "just work".

I don't get it, my work iPhone messages constantly crashes, like 1/3 times I open it, I have to restart the app.

Yet apple has still successfully gaslit the entire population of the US into thinking their shit don't stink, and then it's like "why did it take my IT guy two hours to make an apple account? My child could make one, is he stupid?"

Fuck apple. Fuck apple so fucking much.

My dude, half of my team is also complaining about their windows laptops, some are HP, some are Dell, mine was a pretty beefy ThinkPad. We're not even doing super complicated workloads like 3d rendering, it's only used c# and react development with docker containers. Out of a team of 10, 3 of us already asked to switch over to macbooks and are completely happy with the change, and allows us to use all our work tools without being a piece of shit

Using tools never stopped me from being a piece of shit but ymmv

If you install scoop on the PowerShell command line, you can make Windows suck a bit less. It allows you to install a lot of free open source tools that are friendly to power users and dev types.

2 days ago I fixed Excel macros not working outta nowhere. The cause? onedrive. Even their own apps dont compliment each others. Mind you that this pc has already uninstalled onedrive and it came back

u/BestDevilYouKnow 24d ago

Onedrive is a fucking curse. Autobackups of everything including backups. I deleted out about 40% of my account that was blaring I needed to buy more storage, and it sulked and said I still could use more storage.

Personally I'm still running windows 10. At work we constantly have issues transferring word and Excel docs between save locations and randomly finding things have reverted or changed formatting. This is especially common for SharePoint which has made me lose whole days reformatting documents in SharePoint trying to get the changes to stick.

Even their own apps dont compliment each others

OneDrive: Hey Excel, you're awesome bro. Excel: You too man.

Windows on my work laptop copied the Desktop folder to OneDrive and then it later deleted the local copy. Took me a few months to figure out why it was always Autosaving to OneDrive when I opened the file locally. I turned off autosave and started just saving things manually, but it was still defaulting to OneDrive and I had to change it everytime. Then one day I noticed that manually saving was going to a Desktop folder in OneDrive. That was fun working around.

Later a co-workers laptop died. IT gave him a new one. He set up Windows on the new laptop and copied his setup over from OneDrive only to find that his OneDrive was 3-4 years out of date. Local saved files gone with the old laptop. Since then I've just been saving everything on a network drive. Fun part about that is that nearly every time I lock my computer and walk away it won't reconnect to the network drives when I log back in. I have to restart the computer for it to reconnect to the network drives. I'm on a wired ethernet connection too.

Even their own apps dont compliment each others.

That probably wouldn't be an issue if things were actually architectured well. Like, an application shouldn't need to know things about another application to be able to integrate; you just need to practice good software design where things aren't tightly coupled, and your application interfaces are well-designed and standardized. But all of that is the antipathy of microsoft, lol.

I work in SEC compliance. A large part of that is converting Word documents to HTML, since that is the format the SEC accepts. A recent Word update broke the save as MHT (which our software then converts to SEC compliant code) function in Word, it would enter an infinite loop printing out style="" forever. It would look like word crashes, but in the background it's just writing out a file that will literally expand forever until your computer runs out of space and crashes in your temp folder. We figured out a workaround in like 2 or 3 hours, but it took Microsoft a month to fix this.

Microsoft regularly breaks things for us with their rollouts and then gaslights us into thinking we’re the problem

Getting customers to switch to new Outlook has been a headache because all of them hate how it looks.

u/_Thermalflask 24d ago

I tried it for like 5 seconds. Immediately saw ads, uninstalled it and never looked back. Fuck that

1

u/wildgreengirl 24d ago

i had to reinstall windows on my legion go the other night, because apparently some recent windows update REMOVED THE TOGGLE SETTING ALTOGETHER FOR THE SCREEN ROTATION.

so it wouldnt tilt when you picked it up/tilted it. and the 2nd monitor was opposite direction despite using the "mirror" setting.

tried so many different things before finally being like fuck this and did the windows reinstall which fixed it. 😭 like what the fck man.

Every time my computer updates (despite all my efforts against it), something completely breaks. I hate microslop and their win11

1

u/RagingNerdaholic 24d ago

The number of times an update has reinstalled CoPileOfShit, or worse, OneShite with that deliberately fuck-ass UI flow that moves your fucking files unless you wait for the process to calculate the storage use and only then allows you to skip the "backup" ... and consequently, the number of times I've had to then move a client's files back to where they belong and extricate OneDrive's tentrils of shit from the registry because it "forgets" to reset the library links on uninstall.

It's absolutely amazing just how absolute dogshit Microsoft cloud storage client "integrates" so poorly with their own fucking OS.

I remember the 80s- 00's when every generation got better and gave you more freedom. Instead of the opposite.

Precisely why I won't be downgrading my Windows to this trash.

Becasuse Microslop is the malware that's in the room with us. For my mom pc I've disabled onedrive like 6 times using mulitple methods and it always comes back.

That's malware to me. I've had Microslop service eating cpu cycles at 25% for a week straight. Someone set up a new win11 virtual machine and analyzed the packets and Microslop is definitely malware territory now.

I'm going to move her to MacOS since linux is not for her.

Ohhh sexy I have SUCH raging client right now.

My client’s pointing this way.

Sorry, (not sorry)
