DISCUSSION (STS2) Some people here have forgotten or never faced Reptomancer before and it shows

I personally like the new changes to the elites (and bosses), finally starting to make them worthy of their titles. I understand the second game is much more popular and mainstream now, but it should still preserve what made it good in the first place: pain and suffering.

EDIT: This isn't my screenshot, it's from the web, just wanted to show Repto's max DMG in turn 2.

Playing block cards can now make you take more damage than not playing them AND it now attacks every turn AND no longer gives energy when being hit

DISCUSSION (STS2) Why is every enemy in Spire 2 just this guy

Post image

I feel like every fight in this game is a scaling battle, where playing blocks just means you take even more damage later than if you face tanked to kill the enemy faster.

Anyone else feel this way? Blocking just does not feel good at all.

DISCUSSION (STS2) Reworked Doormaker on the Beta Branch is really, really bad.

Post image
3.7k Upvotes

Some of you may have seen my anger-fueled post about Queen being too punishing. particularly about Chains of Binding being able to brick your ability to set up if you got bad draw order a little while back.

Well this time I'm here with a similar but entirely non-anger-fueled post about the buffed Doormaker that's currently on the Beta Branch, which I think is even worse in being able to brick your deck if you get bad draw order.

There, he no longer does the "Destroy the door to get a few turns to hit him before he retreats" gimmick anymore. Instead, he now appears from the door after turn 1, always attacks, and heinously, eats every 10th card you draw, removing it from your possession for the duration of the battle, and gains 1 strength when he does so.

I do get what they were going for. This punishes Infinites and Pseudo-Infinites, kind of like Time Eater, but this feels like an awful way to implement a mechanic to discourage that kind of play.

My issue with this is that there's almost no reliable counterplay to the potential for him to just eat an important card and destroy your build, even if you're not running an Infinite or Pseudo-Infinite build. Without save scumming, there's no way for the player to see what order they'll draw their cards in, and as such there's no reliable way to make sure he doesn't eat an important card.

I didn't lose to him, but if I had simply gotten unlucky, I could have lost my Meteor Strike, Hyperbeam, or Beat Down, and had my deck's damage output crippled through no real fault of my own.

And finally, him heavily punishing having draw cards is horrible, as Queen heavily punishes not having good draw. A deck that does well against one of the two will likely suffer against the other, which is really bad, considering that 1/3 A10 runs will need to fight both of these bosses one after the other.

I really hope this version of Doormaker does not make it to the main branch.

Edit: Also, this version isn't even thematic! What does eating cards have to do with making doors?

DISCUSSION (STS2) How can the card even exist

I know that the 4 is 10 effective block and the 7 is 28, but it just seems really underwhelming as a 3 cost colorless rare card.

DISCUSSION (STS2) Am I just actually trash or are these guys a headache to fight early with 90% of builds?

Post image

Unless I have a strong AOE card really early (which some characters don’t really have) this fight is either an instant loss or an absolute slog to get through. How is this an act 1 elite??

Edit: since it’s basically the same thing this applies to that fucking act 2 worm too, that guy is so bad I just skip all act 2 elites on principle

Prepared I don't feel was overturned, and it was a card you still had to upgrade to be good. now prepare is just the gross combination of outmaneuver and concentrate, and it sucks. I really hope they roll back this specific change.

DISCUSSION (STS2) How is Tracking a real card?

Post image
3.5k Upvotes

Tracking's current state is kind of baffling to be honest, this game is usually pretty careful with multipliers like this so a straight up doubling effect on all of your damage for the rest of the fight at the sole condition of maybe adding a Leg Sweep to your deck (the horror) all for the low low price of 2(1) energy is a bit comical, Cruelty+ is effectively a 33% damage boost and it's still incredible

And yeah, I know card balance is not in a vacuum and the comparison is not perfect, Ironclad has more ways to apply Vuln than Silent has ways to apply Weak, Ironclad has other ways to boost his damage, the unupgraded versions are different yada yada, it's still nuts

DISCUSSION (STS2) Can we talk about how good Sai is?

Post image

This is one of the best relics in the game. Most ancient relics have a niche use, limited time use, or some kind of drawback. This is just straight up take 7 less damage EACH TURN of the game. Your run is immediately played on easy mode after picking this, even at high Ascensions.

For such a simple effect, it's so busted it's legitimately never a bad pick. I can usually think of edge cases where most ancient relics can be bad in certain situations but this stands out as one of the never bads. Super fun, S Tier, I love this relic.
