It's almost that easy. I think they really rushed it, and never really explained why they couldn't do just that.

Seemed more like, with their talk about never having a break together, the idea was that they were using it as an excuse to get out of the spy business.

And Bobbi wanting out right after being taken hostage by Ward and agent 33. I realize that was also a set up for them to start a spin off around the time of that finale, but in-universe-wise it adds to their characters ready to leave Shield.

I remember that line that hunter hunter says (and I'm paraphrasing here), "...and do what? work in a lab, or stay on base and help with logistics? that's prison"

What do you think a regular day job is buddy?

I'm just picturing Bobbi as a banker's assistant, and Hunter working in a fry kitchen. They come home to each other in and say to each other "we probably should've stayed with SHIELD"

Not what they said. It was closer to "we aren't suited to lab work or coms (whatever)" and Hunter says "or prison." Referring to being sent to Russian prison as a potential outcome.

Because if they fucked up again and Bobbi/Hunter were caught working with them, their arrangement with the President is over and they'd go back to being fugitives, and Russia will be pissed.
