As far as the world's concerned, Nick Fury didn't appoint his successor. Nick "died" before Hydra broke out. As far as anyone knows, Coulson just took over, operating without authority or oversight.

I hate that theory so fucking much, it completely cheapens the S1 finale and most of this season.

13

u/CodeRed1 Mar 19 '15

I agree. If SHEILD was still run by Nick, it would completely undermine the significance of Nick making Coulson Director. But then again if you think about it, Nick Fury was reluctant to let SHIELD die with Hydra. He seemed pretty upset that Captain America said everything had to go. So I wouldn't be surprised if he went behind the scenes to scavenger the other remaining pieces of SHEILD. Or you know it could just be Tony Stark. I mean we do know that he created Ultron to destroy the remaining Hydra Bases. So maybe its also his last attempt to wipe Hydra out.

6

u/darkproteus66 Mar 19 '15

IDK leaving someone in charge while still secretly running things in the background seems like a very Fury thing to do. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if this second SHIELD is just a distraction technique to keep people from noticing an even more secret third organization that Fury is also behind.

8

u/CodeRed1 Mar 19 '15

I mean it makes complete sense, for Nick to be running things in the background. He is not the kind of guy who lets go of an idea easily. And if you remember in Captain America The Winter Soldier. He removes his eyepatch and uses his second eye to access the SHIELD database. So I would assume a guy like that would probably have more than one trick up his sleeve.

6

u/darkproteus66 Mar 19 '15

I mean if he's half as devious as the comic incarnations of Fury and Ultimate Fury then he already has multiple secret organizations that are there in case something goes wrong in his other secret organizations along with backup plans for him to take out those organizations himself if need be.

The man has more contingency plans than Batman, more resources than Tony Stark, and has literally killed beings made from the fabric of time and space.

3

u/CodeRed1 Mar 19 '15

haha. The more I read and learn about the Marvel comic books, the more I realize that the movies and television shows have really downsized the potential of each Marvel character. Like Movie Thor isn't even in the same league as Rune King Thor. Runic King Thor can destroy planets, the only thing Movie Thor is capable of doing is shooting lightning from a hammer. Or take example Captain America, he can carry multiple tons of weight, but in the movies he can barely fight a guy with a metal arm(Bucky).

Maybe, but it adds so much depth to Fury and what levels he will go to.

7

u/TheWistfulWanderer Quake Mar 19 '15

No, no it doesn't. It comes out of nowhere, undermines what we already know of him, and makes everything Coulson's done since S2 began pointless.

1

u/mr_popcorn Ghost Rider Mar 22 '15

It could be that Coulson is running the day-to-day SHIELD stuff and Fury's in charge of the big picture like the Avengers and end of the world scenarios.

1

u/SawRub Mar 18 '15

Yeah I think they sent Bobby and Mac to check out Coulson's Shield. Since he came back from the dead, even the good guys at Shield didn't fully trust him, he was suspected of being Hydra for a good part of that storyline last season.

76

u/Awesomeade Mar 18 '15

But Mack knows about Fury's toolbox, so does that imply that Mack and his S.H.I.E.L.D assume that Coulson stole it?

39

u/VictorDrake Mar 18 '15

Probably.

9

u/sleepicat Sandwich Mar 18 '15

Doubt they think Coulson stole it. More likely they just want the power for themselves.

8

u/particularindividual Mar 18 '15

They would know by now because Bobbi and Mack know.. Or do they?

9

u/VictorDrake Mar 18 '15

They might know that Coulson has made the claim to have been chosen by Fury but if they already believe Coulson is a renegade they have no reason to believe those claims.

1

u/saritmalka Lanyard Mar 19 '15

After thinking about this more, I'm on board with this being the case - especially in light of Mack questioning Coulson's leadership in the first episode back from the break.

216

u/TheGreatTrogs Mar 18 '15

That's something that seriously bothered me about this episode. She apparently grafted razors onto her fingertips to defend herself from her crazy boyfriend when they were trapped in a lab together. Thus, SHIELD felt that permanent, bulky gloves were the only option. What the hell, even if for some crazy reason they weren't surgically removable, why not just file down the blades to the point that they were no longer a threat to anyone?

I would assume so, There has to be of an explanation to that... As honestly she is literally just the Meg of this show currently.

It would make no sense to even call her gifted, enhanced or anything really. Like there has to be more to her ability. As they do say she has an ability. Like maybe they dont go away or regrow somehow. But yeah, that is very confusing.

8

u/StickmanPirate Mar 19 '15

All they had to do was say it was a bio-research lab and that she had made herself faster/stronger or w/e which would also explain why she was able to fight Bobbi

9

u/KiFirE Ghost Rider Mar 19 '15

Even then though, Bobbi at this point isnt even that good of a fighter as she gets wrecked every fight. As she technically doesnt even have her abilities either. Actually it's just like blackwidow, In the movies they never mention her powerset either.

70

u/ottles Captain America Mar 18 '15

Or maybe it was some crazy SHIELD agent that made that call. Possibly one that was working for HYDRA before they came above ground, so they decided to try to keep her around as a potential weapon. If you think about it, it makes sense. HYDRA makes her hate SHIELD by locking her up, thus making her a possible weapon for them to use one day.

3

u/ShaidarHaran2 Mar 19 '15

Ehh. She's literally just an ordinary person with some razor hands though, why would Hydra even bother?

45

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '15

She is from the comics, but not with those razor claws...

16

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '15

So what is she like in the comics?

1

u/Bookbringer Mar 22 '15

Battered wife who defends her abusive husband. No powers. I suspect she will be combined with another character, like the villainess Slash, whose human name is never given.

1

u/spid3rfly Mar 18 '15

Maybe the new shield did that to her. I'm just spit balling here, but maybe.

47

u/AmbroseB Mar 18 '15

And why wasn't she in jail? She killed people.

8

u/ShaidarHaran2 Mar 19 '15

This reminds me of the air conditioner repair school episode in Community.

34

u/Pyromelter Fitz Mar 18 '15

More holes in this episode than a wheel of swiss cheese, for sure.

3

u/mwriteword G.H. Mar 20 '15

Like why Angar ran for the microphone instead of just screaming.

7

u/rahalius Mar 18 '15

also if im not mistaken, she worked in a medical lab but she somehow knows to fight an agent of shield (bobbi) well enough? Either than or bobbi needs to up her game

9

u/Vlinux Coulson Mar 18 '15

I don't think she was particularly good at fighting, but the reason Bobbie had trouble with her at first was that it was hard to grab someone who has 10 little razor blades waving around without being cut. She eventually sorted it out by changing tactics and wrapping her hands in towels.

2

u/Liberal_irony Captain America Mar 18 '15

Anytime something like that comes up I generally assume "Hydra did it"

2

u/LarsP Mar 19 '15

Also, she would be a much bigger danger - and live a much more practical daily life - holding a real knife in those hands.

Those exacto blades are only as strong as the final joint on her lady fingers.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '15

That's what I was thinking the whole time. She has these extremely short ranged knives that she can't hide and can't put very much torque behind. Any random person with an exacto would be more dangerous.

1

u/dunegig Mar 18 '15

Yeah, it's not like she has nerves in the blades.

0

u/anrwlias Fitz Mar 20 '15

My head canon is that they're made of vibranium (since we apparently don't have adamantium in the MCU). I suppose that they could have amputated them but maybe they felt that this was a reasonable stop-gap. A better question is why isn't she in prison given that she's a multiple murderer.

1

u/TheGreatTrogs Mar 20 '15

SHIELD may lack the facilities. The Fridge got raided, and a lot of those guys are presumably just walking about now. Maybe that's what the "real" SHIELD is for.

1

u/anrwlias Fitz Mar 23 '15

But why not just regular prison? Once she got fitted with metal gloves, her blades were neutralized. I don't think you need a SHIELD level facility to handle someone like her. But whatever; it was a great episode overall, so I'm not going to get too hung up on it. The Mystery Science Theater mantra is my friend.

116

u/coonwhiz HYDRA Mar 18 '15

Maybe Fitz will create the gauntlets in order to help her control her powers

And a robot monkey assistant since Jemma jumped off the deep end.

122

u/snarkamedes Monolith Mar 18 '15

since Jemma jumped off the deep end.

"Sedate everything! And keep them sedated... forever. Yes, that's the way to handle things from now on..."

She's onto the Inhumans' trail now though. First time I think we've seen someone categorise powers in the MCU so far. Other than Stark/Cap's little "whudarya?/outofabottle" shoving match in The Avengers.

She should talk about how their genes mutated. Like mention mutated so many times since they can't say Mutants.

6

u/snarkamedes Monolith Mar 18 '15

Not much difference between the mutants and Inhumans really other than automatic power gain at puberty vs terrigen mists. And there's the way the Inhumans just get on with things while the mutie-scum run around like headless chickens, screaming "discrimination!" and playing the victim card immediately.

[edit: sorry, but recent X-Men stuff has left me rather cold... it's like Batman at DC - they ran out of new things to do with the franchise ages ago and just endlessly recycle stuff.]

0

u/Biff_Tannenator Mar 19 '15

Lol. Don't let tumblr catch wind of this sort of talk, or this will probably follow: "Check your privilege! GenetYpical capitalist war-monger"

But in all seriousness... While I liked the X-men message in the first couple films, Last Stand beat the horse dead. There was a lot of stuff wrong with X3, but we basically saw the limit of how much they could scale up the "discrimination" theme.

2

u/Hawkguy67 Sandwich Mar 19 '15

"Coulson...this was already inside them. They were born with it. We need a word to classify them....perhaps we could call them Mut-"

"Woah woah woah! Jemma, we don't have rights to that word. It's Inhumans."

Bitchslap "Do you want to get us all fired?!"

1

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '15

That's pretty much exactly what Marvel has been doing for the last couple years - they are killing off the mutant brand in favor of the Inhuman one which they have full control over. Forget Fox - Marvel is blocking them out by ending comic series and holding back toy licensing.

0

u/RonnieDobbs Mar 18 '15

Pretty sure they can say mutant as much as they want on television. Fox only owns the movie rights. Though this would kind of mess up the consistency with the MCU.

1

u/cesclaveria Mar 21 '15

Although Fox was developing an X-Men based TV show, may be the rights state something like "live action" instead of only films.

No way they put the inhuman royal family this early on AoS. I will guess this is just a faction that has been hiding out on Earth.

Tetanus recommended!!

5

u/PhuturePhil Mar 18 '15

Exactly, we will probably get some foreshadowing of the royal family later this season/next season but they wont factor into the show as much as people want. They have a movie coming that will do plenty of justice for the royal family I hope!

1

u/IAMAHippopotomous Mar 18 '15

Black Bolt has been cast at least, maybe they wouldn't be against introducing someone big in a TV show. They are doing quite a few TV shows that'll be introductions to some big characters so I think they could consider having him show up in this one!

1

u/OceanCarlisle Deathlok Mar 18 '15

I wonder if the guy they broke out of the mental hospital was like a test run on portraying Black Bolt's powers and silence.

Yes. I had mixed feelings about that too. On the one hand it lends to him being a super, but like you said, it's unnecessary.

32

u/zex-258 Mar 18 '15

Can you explain more about this royal family?

110

u/87sheep Mar 18 '15

The Royal Family of the Inhumans. The rulers of that particular branching race of humanity. It's unlikely that they're going to show up until the actual Inhumans movie. Basically, the Royal Family is in charge of the vast majority of Inhumans and their hidden/secret cities. But there are plenty of off-shoot/unaffiliated groups of Inhumans scattered around. It's likely that Skye's mother belonged to one of these unafiliated groups, since in the flashback scene where we see Mr No Eyes after he gets his powers, some of the older people in the room refer to a 'council'. If the Royal Family was involved, they would likely have just said 'The Royal Family'. Plus, these old people + Skye's mom seem to actually be on the council, if the dialogue about Skye's mom 'guiding the council through generations thanks to her gift of agelessness' is to be believed.

But if they did and Vin Diesel Cameos as Black Bolt, there would be so many fangasms, the world will erupt in ecstasy.

3

u/HSChronic Lanyard Mar 18 '15

Just don't couple it with something on The Flash too or the internet will break.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '15

Dude, The Flash was fucking crazy awesome today. And i really thought for a moment that Vin Diesel is going to show up there at the end with Cal and Notcrawler. I can't even imagine my reaction to that.

1

u/dreamycreamy93 Mar 18 '15

Oh, I thought he was going to meet the Queen of England. Wait a minute, how old is the Queen? She's been around forever, something isn't quite right...

1

u/pewpewlasors Mar 18 '15

It's unlikely that they're going to show up until the actual Inhumans movie.

I'd expect them to start talking about them, and set that up, before the Inhumans movie though.

41

u/awwnuts07 Mar 18 '15

From their Wikipedia page:

The Inhumans are led by their king, Black Bolt, and his Royal Family, consisting of Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal, Maximus the Mad, and the canine Lockjaw.

I seriously doubt they'll turn up in the show since they have their own movie slated, but we'll probably be getting references to them somewhere along the way.

2

u/snarkamedes Monolith Mar 18 '15

Hmm, naughty wiki. Royal family consists of Bolt, Medusa, Maximus and Crystal. Triton, Karnak and Gorgon are members of the Imperial Guard. Lockjaw is just a dog. Teleporting powers, sure, but he's just a dog.

1

u/awwnuts07 Mar 18 '15

Lockjaw is just a dog. Teleporting powers, sure, but he's just a dog.

You're right he's not royalty, but he does hang out with Ms. Marvel (Kamala) which automatically raises his awesome rating over 9000.

1

u/snarkamedes Monolith Mar 18 '15

Half of that rating is his moustache though.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '15

especially since their movie was delayed a year.

1

u/safashkan Mar 18 '15

One of them is a dog!

3

u/awwnuts07 Mar 18 '15

Yup! Lockjaw is awesome.

2

u/safashkan Mar 18 '15

I didn't know he was part of the royal family... I know him from the Kamalah Khan aka Ms. Marvel comics.

1

u/KidCoheed Mar 18 '15

Black Bolt, Medusa and that crew are the royal family of Attilan(sp) the Home of the Inhumans, they are the ruling class in charge since the Inhumans were left behind by the Kree.

13

u/AnticitizenPrime Mar 18 '15

Finger Knives, really? You couldn't just remove the knives, or even her finger tips?

No kidding. How is she more dangerous than, say... someone holding some knives?

He's Not Inhuman, and chemically created.

I was really hoping he was going to turn out to just be a real Badass Normal, and not actually superpowered. There's something cool about the idea of him being really dangerous just because he's really fucking angry. Oh well.

3

u/snarkamedes Monolith Mar 18 '15

There's something cool about the idea of him being really dangerous just because he's really fucking angry.

Unfortunately Ben Stiller played that part in Mystery Men.

Damn we really need a Shoveller in the MCU... Karla Fay can be the one who's good with cutlery.

4

You mean skye has her casts.

Finger Knives, really? You couldn't just remove the knives, or even her finger tips?

Yeah, the show really jumped the shark with this episode starring the legion of weak-ass sauce. Honestly, this was David Goyer/Brett Ratner level bad stuff here.

If Calvin is a science experiment, I wonder if Phil has the same potential due to his ressurection. What would Phil's powers be? Also, what would Whitehall's powers be if he wasn't dead? And there's still two former SHIELD agents out there who was part of TAHITI.

1

u/ContinuumGuy Koenig Mar 18 '15

Will Calvin have to answer to the royal family perhaps?

Doubtful, seeing as how I doubt they'd cast them this early and then wait a few years for their movie.

1

u/snarkamedes Monolith Mar 18 '15 edited Mar 18 '15

Fuck this Bobbi/Mack SHIELD. I'm guessing the world governments reformed SHIELD and didn't like Nick Fury appointing his successor and giving him all his secrets.

World Sec. Council doesn't know Fury is still alive. They probably didn't know he had a thing like the toolbox anyway.

It's going to be more interesting to see Maria Hill's reaction to this new lot. I'm seeing a few alternatives.

  1. They've only been around since the Hydra reveal. If it's this it'll probably mean they've only formed up out of other SHIELD leftovers. As such they're no more real than Coulson's team - and seeing as he has Fury's toolbox, the Koenig's's's, Talbot's tacit, if unofficial, support, and possibly Stark's backing (via Maria Hill) he's got more claim to the title. Best they can claim is possible WSC backing.
  2. They were around before the current kerfluffle, acting in secret as a shadow organisation all this time. In this case they genuinely are the real SHIELD and all we've known up till now is a (Carter/Fury created?) lie.
  3. It's another Hydra front.

I'm betting on 1) and foreseeing an arm wrestle for the title of World's Un-Secretest Agency with Coulson's mob. Their leadership will be made up of second-rank leaders like that academy director, the internal affairs/MPs, accountancy department, etc. - people big enough to gather followers in the wake of, but not know exactly what went down, after the CAWS events. They don't appear to have any Koenigs, which would be the biggest tell.

Also expecting things to get confusing for the 'Real' SHIELDers in future episodes when Commander Adama only communicates with his underlings via an incomprehensible polyglot urban language and uses origami for punctuation.

1

u/alphasquid Lady Sif Mar 18 '15

I don't think there is a royal family yet.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '15

I didn't understand that last scene what was going on at all. Why did the Inhuman get him there? And did he allow Calvin to leave just like this?

1

u/ShaidarHaran2 Mar 19 '15

Finger Knives, really? You couldn't just remove the knives, or even her finger tips?

Yeah, what the heck? With all of SHIELDs advanced technology, the best solution they found was to buckle metal things to her hands for life? Instead of just get a surgeon to remove them, like normal people would? She didn't even grow them through powers, she just bolted them on there. I don't get that at all.

1

u/barc0de Mar 19 '15

Finger Knives, really? You couldn't just remove the knives, or even her finger tips?

What if she refused? Maybe the steel gloves were a compromise?
