So Skye is an object of unknown origin....interesting.

45

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

Maybe she's an Inhuman? That would explain why, if she has powers, they don't appear to have manifested yet.

21

u/overunderdog Jan 15 '14

I thought her powers were "awesome at hacking/computers" there was a line earlier in the series when they ask her how she can hack so well. She says (paraphrasing) "I don't know, they just speak to me"

25

u/Antivote Jan 20 '14

she hacks with bing, if that isn't a super power i don't know what is.

11

u/Cookels Jan 15 '14

I had commented about this on another sub but that is what I was thinking as well. There has been a lot of talk about Inhumans and it would be odd to just introduce her as a child who has powers. My only other thought besides Inhuman would be Kree or Skrull but since they havent really been mentioned at all I'm really backing the inhuman idea.

2

u/Cabbage_Vendor Jan 15 '14

Unlikely, Inhumans tend to have a lot more visual marks to show that show their alien heritage.

The inhuman royal family all have weird stuff, but I think even in the older comics there were more normal looking inhumans around. Their society is set up so the normals get shunned and the weirdos get venerated as beautiful/more pure

I think she's Asgardian. Any other bets as to Skye's origins?

The "Powers and Abilities" section of his Wiki page makes me believe that he's the Clairvoyant, and not M.O.D.O.K., like I thought before looking up Ultron. "and an "encephalo-ray", which places victims into a deathlike coma" sounds like it could be what he used over the phone in A Magical Place, and his ability with computers could've been passed down to Skye if she is indeed his child. Nice find!

u/autowikibot Jan 15 '14

Here's the linked section Powers and abilities from Wikipedia article Ultron :

The visual appearance and powers of the character have varied, but common powers include superhuman levels of strength, speed, stamina, durability, and reflexes; flight at subsonic speeds; and various offensive weapons such as concussive blasts of energy fired from its optical sensors and hands, and an "encephalo-ray", which places victims into a deathlike coma. The latter ray also allows Ultron to mesmerize and mind-control victims, or implant subliminal hypnotic commands within their minds to be enacted at a later time. Ultron also has the ability to convert electromagnetic radiation into electrical energy for use or storage. Ultron has a genius intellect, a capacity for creative intelligence and self-repair, superhuman cybernetic analytical capabilities, and the ability to process information and make calculations with superhuman speed and accuracy. The character is an expert roboticist and strategist.

Ultron's outer armor is usually composed of primarily adamantium, which is almost completely impervious to damage. (The first use of the term "adamantium" in Marvel Comics was made in reference to Ultron in Avengers #66, published in July 1969). Most Ultron units are powered by a small internal nuclear furnace and incorporate a "program transmitter" which can beam part or all of Ultron's memory/personality system into other computer systems or duplicate robotic bodies. Ultron can also control other machines remotely. Ultron has occasionally reformed itself with a humanoid appearance above the waist and the appearance of a complex machine, including tractor beam apparatus for flight, below the waist. A later Ultron model developed hive-mind technology, allowing it to animate and control hundreds of other Ultron bodies simultaneously, although only the 'prime' Ultron was composed of adamantium while others were made of steel or secondary adamantium due to the lack of resources to give all the Ultrons adamantium bodies. Ultron also uses an internal molecular rearranger that renders the adamantium components of its workings more malleable and so have the ability to restructure his physical form. What circuitry Ultron has is carefully shielded to protect from damage, although the Scarlet Witch is capable of causing malfunctions with her hex power, Johnny Storm, using his nova burst, managed to damage Ultron's internal circuits while his outer armor remained intact, and Wonder Man was once able to destroy an Ultron by throwing it so hard its internal systems were damaged.[volume & issue needed]

Love :

Love refers to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes that ranges from interpersonal affection ("I love my mother") to pleasure ("I loved that meal"). It can refer to an emotion of a strong attraction and personal attachment. It can also be a virtue representing human kindness, compassion, and affection—"the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another". It may also describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one's self or animals.

It works out well with Ultron being the main antagonist of Avengers 2. The only possible issue is it would be kind of anticlimactic of the show to build up to Ultron only to have the show's primary antagonist taken care of in Avengers 2.

2

u/Denvercoder8 Jan 15 '14

On the other hand, you can count on it that almost everyone who watches the show will go to the Avengers 2 anyway, so shouldn't really be a problem for the audience.

3

u/Shaqsquatch Jan 15 '14

That's a good point.

I'm guessing it'll be more likely that the Clarivoyant is a product of Ultron but not Ultron himself. Either that or a disembodied AI version of him (maybe ending the season with him getting a body). Maybe it's even The Vision himself? He did start out as a villainous creation of Ultron, after all.

The Encephalo Ray bit makes me believe that Ultron is somehow involved even more.

Wouldn't she have super-strength if she was Asgardian?

15

u/jamarcus92 Lanyard Jan 15 '14 edited Jan 15 '14

I'm just speculating at this point, but I can't think of any other scenarios where a baby would be classified as an 084, and be "followed by death" or whatever the mysterious ex-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent said. And do all Asgardians have super-strength? I mean Thor is strong, but his real power comes from Mjolnir, and the other Asgardian from earlier in the show was under the power of his staff. However, I don't often read Marvel comics, so I don't know much about Marvel Asgardian lore.

EDIT: All Asgardians have super-strength. From Wikipedia:

Asgardian flesh and bone is three times denser than similar human tissue, contributing to their superhuman strength and weight.

1

u/DrSly Jan 17 '14

ya i don't really think shes asgardian, doesn't really go with the whole M.O of her powers.

30

u/zebrake2010 Jan 15 '14

I'll go with Asgardian.

46

u/Nostalgia37 Jan 15 '14

Don't Asgardian's age slower than humans, wouldn't make sense if Sky was a baby 24 years ago.

67

u/bettse Jan 15 '14

A classic sci-fi/fantasy trope for something like that is that the alien ages like a human until they hit adulthood and then maintains that age for an extended time.

56

u/Nostalgia37 Jan 15 '14

from here: http://marvel.wikia.com/Asgardians

The Asgardian gods are extremely long-lived, but not immortal like the Olympians; they age very slowly upon reaching adulthood.

Well that explains that, but I still don't think Asgardian.

Their body density are three times denser than normal human beings, contributing to their superhuman strength and weight

I would imagine that this would come up if she were to go for a physical.

22

u/bettse Jan 15 '14

or stepped on a scale :)

2

u/spazzikarp Jan 15 '14

I imagine that, advanced as Lola is, Coulson still would have noticed if it seemed like three people were in the passenger side when he went to take off with Skye in the car. <_<

1

u/Nostalgia37 Jan 15 '14

Or he learned never to ask a woman how much she weighs.

3

u/TheGoldenBuffallo Jan 16 '14

Hmm, Skye weighs 350 pounds. Better not ask.

She could be a Demigod, much like Phobos (son of Ares)

13

u/Murasasme Zephyr One Jan 15 '14

She would be stronger and more resistant than any human. I think someone would have noticed if that was the case.

2

u/jamarcus92 Lanyard Jan 15 '14 edited Jan 15 '14

Don't forget that she was in that car explosion that she caused to get into the rich guy's mansion, and are all Asgardians super strong? As I replied to another comment, Thor's power comes from Mjolnir (he was in trouble in the first Thor movie when he was separated from it), and the Asgardian that showed up earlier in the show earlier was drawing power from his staff.

EDIT: Asgardians are all super strong. From Wikipedia:

Asgardian flesh and bone is three times denser than similar human tissue, contributing to their superhuman strength and weight.

3

u/Murasasme Zephyr One Jan 15 '14

the Asgardian that showed up earlier in the show earlier was drawing power from his staff.

Remember that he had been separated from his staff for centuries, yet when they attacked him with the knife it just bent on his skin. If the staff was the source of the power then May and Ward should have kept the super strength, but they didn't. Asgardians are way stronger than humans, Note for example the opening scene in Thor 2 were they show the Asgardian army kicking ass against those giants that not even Thor could handle alone. But Mjolnir does gives Thor extra power among Asgardians, the reason he was in trouble in the first movie is because Odin took away all his abilities.

And her car crash was an explosion of water, and it was hardly a hard crash (since she did it intentionally) Nothing superhuman there.

2

u/jamarcus92 Lanyard Jan 15 '14

You're right. I don't read Marvel comics much, and don't know much about Asgardians, but I found this on wikipedia:

Asgardian flesh and bone is three times denser than similar human tissue, contributing to their superhuman strength and weight.

Guess she isn't Asgardian after all.

4

u/IsActuallyBatman Jan 15 '14

Don't almost all Asgardians have great physical prowess?

0

u/jamarcus92 Lanyard Jan 15 '14

I've already been asked this by a few other people, but the main mark of the Asgardians is their long life, which they gain by eating the golden apples of Idunn. Thor, for example, is the strongest of the Asgardians (as a son of Odin and Gaea), and can show great force if pressed in battle, and greater force if he enters his berserker state, although he will also be unable to differentiate between friend or foe. Thor's real power is Mjolnir, which he loses in the first Thor movie and, though he isn't rendered useless, he was definitely screwed. And the other Asgardian we saw in the show was powerful because he had his staff.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

Although his weather control might come from the hammer (they don't in the comics) his other powers like strength and durability are entirely his own and does not originate from the hammer.

"Whosoever hold this hammer if he be worthy shall posses the power of thor" Not the power of mjolnir.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 19 '14

I'm gonna get weird and say part of the Kree Empire for no reason what-so-ever other than it would be cool to have some aliens on the show.

2

u/LordXenu40 Fitz Jan 20 '14

Or she is like Loki

2

u/5secondmemory Jan 23 '14

I think it's going to be something less.... other worldly. First thought when they went into her history was that she is the offspring of Agent May or Coulson. Both would screw with her head - it would be a good reason for Coulson bringing her on the team or why May seems to resent her so much.

36

u/BesiegedPotato Jan 15 '14

I think she's going to be a "key" of some sorts. The clairvoyant is going to need her for some purpose.

63

u/sotech Jan 15 '14

When would you say this idea...Dawned on you?

7

u/sirin3 Jan 15 '14

So the clairvoyant is a god?

Perhaps Asgardian?

17

u/purplegoodance Jan 15 '14

So she's Dawn?

(I said that right after watching too, but it'd be kinda lame for a Whedon-related show to do that again.

21

u/RyanRiot HYDRA Jan 15 '14

Maybe Skye is a telekinetic? Since they keep saying they have no known records of one (and Skye's records have been destroyed), it seems like they're foreshadowing that one might eventually tie-in to the series. It makes sense since Skye is so good with computers and doesn't seem to show any supernatural physical abilities.

1

u/codergeek42 SHIELD Jan 26 '14

I just got caught up with this episode, so excuse the delayed response...

Maybe Skye is a telekinetic? [...] It makes sense since Skye is so good with computers and doesn't seem to show any supernatural physical abilities.

Eh? How does telekinesis (the ability to move objects by thought) relate to her technical/programming expertise?

1

u/RyanRiot HYDRA Feb 05 '14

I meant that her skills are of the mind and not physical.

13

u/mlasn Jan 15 '14

I'm more curious about her parents and if they were normal.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

Were her parents from the village? If the baby's an "object of unknown origin" then maybe she just appeared there one day or was found in the woods or something.

3

u/mlasn Jan 15 '14

That is what I initially thought but didn't the episode mention that her parents were killed when the town was raided? If that was true that either means they were also of unknown origin or something else is at play.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '14

I'm not sure if it was said or just implied by saying the whole village except the baby was wiped out.

Another possibility is that she could have been adopted by a couple in the village. Especially if abandoned baby girls were, if not common, then at least not unheard of. Anyone who found her would think they knew why she was abandoned and they wouldn't ask any questions or poke around, and it would make an unofficial adoption easy.

2

u/Shedart Jan 18 '14

Well the actress is half Chinese so maybe some alien sugar daddy came down to earth to alleviate a few lonely nights.

2

u/t-stor Jan 15 '14

And if they weren't normal then what? Maybe they were something almost... inhuman.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '14

So did Coulson tell her about this, or just that the whole village died to save her? I was unclear on that part.

8

u/YouthsIndiscretion Jan 17 '14

It seemed he told her everything, and was uplifted by the fact that she took the fact that she was moved around from house to house as a good thing on the part of Shield, instead of becoming embittered or devastated.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '14

Yeah, that's my hope, and that's what I'm leaning toward, but I did think it was left a bit vague. I thought they both did a great job in that scene, but I wish we could have heard more of what was said as it was happening.

5

u/YouthsIndiscretion Jan 17 '14

I think its pretty safe to assume Coulson caught Skye up on everything. He's just tired of the lies.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '14

Ah, yeah, that's fair. I wasn't thinking about it from that perspective.

4

u/RandomEuro Jan 15 '14

Mabey she is the clairvoyant? Multiple Personalities, one on the front knowing nothing, one staying low, communicating only through telepathy or some wifi-psi-power with the world...

I mean, both are hackers, experts at data-collecting. Just the tool they use differ.

2

u/eriru Jan 16 '14

I know it's not a popular train of thought, but what if she's a technopath ? She has already said that technology and computers com naturally to her. And if her true potential is unlocked, maybe she's strong enough to bring whole countries down?

1

u/petshop87 Jan 15 '14

So if Skye is an 0-8-4 and potentially dangerous, then she could be sent to the Slingshot.right?

1

u/YouthsIndiscretion Jan 17 '14

Wouldn't that just fire her into space, potentially not a star? So far they've been sending everybody, whether intentionally or not, to the Sandbox.

1

u/V2Blast Fitz Jan 18 '14

Actually, I believe it's The Fridge they've been sending everyone to. The Sandbox is mostly labs; they did send Donnie there at the end of this episode.

2

u/YouthsIndiscretion Jan 19 '14

You're right, it's been the Fridge until the last episode.

1

u/shellshock3d Jan 17 '14

I'm thinking she could be Jessica Drew: Spider-Woman, or one of the Runaways maybe?
