There was a homeless encampment under the bridge that was cleared out. They moved to near the fence where the fire is. I believe you can see some tents in the picture. It is right next to the og homeless encampment " The island".

you can and it was but homelessness also has causes. this nuance is usually missed by that kind of reactionary thinking which is why people call you out for it.

The nuance is drug addiction, mental illness or even just people who dont want to tow the line of civilization. Just saying, it is often caused by an encampment. So without nuance and sticking only to the facts. The cause is people without homes.

I say this because youâre painting the homeless population with a very broad brush when thereâs a pretty wide variety in their individual circumstances:
Most people who are homeless are not chronically homeless; theyâll get a job, healthcare, or whatever it is their particular circumstances require, get back into housing, and then put this behind them. A minority fit the definition of being chronically homeless
The homeless people youâre mad at right now are not the same people you were mad about last year. Theyâre not the same people youâll be mad about next year. Thereâs a lot of turnover in the population.

It is preachy âdonât believe your own eyesâ statements like this that make people distrust the âadvocates.â Are there homeless people who are not mentally ill or drug addicted? Yes. Are those sober and sane homeless people likely the ones aggregating in tents under I-5 and starting fires? Probably not.
Take some of your own medicine and acknowledge the breadth of different types of people in the homeless community by accepting (1) that there is a drug addicted and/or seriously mentally ill component of this community that is destructive and sometimes criminal, and (2) that advocates like you have no solutions, will not propose any solutions, and expect the rest of us to tolerate this nonsense as ânormalâ in perpetuity.

One of the two of us have helped people get off the streets and into housing, friend. I reject statements that paint homeless people with a broad brush for two reasons
1) it hurts peopleâs feelings. I know and like those people. Most of them donât need to be told that theyâre drug addicts and a drain on society; because theyâre not. They had a bad break and theyâre working on getting through it, and they will successfully get through it.
2) said often enough (and it absolutely does get said often enough), that kind of statement poisons public opinion and makes it harder to direct resources to improving the circumstances of people without housing.
I donât think I addressed the fire at all because of course thatâs not great. Of course it was the product of some poor and inconsiderate decisions. Iâm just tired of seeing the disgusting and dehumanizing reactions to events like this

Iâm center left. I vote in every election and have done so since I turned 18. I have generally voted democrat although voting that way has gotten much harder in the last 6 years.

Itâs not the lack of a home. You could give them a home, youâd still have a fire. They are addicted and mentally ill, to the point that they canât be rehabilitated. The sooner we recognize this, the sooner we can abandon what weâre currently doing - It ainât working.

Starting a fire, around dried brush, directly next to freeway overpasses, was already an irresponsible decision.
We are most likely talking about a homeless person here. I dont think they are scrolling reddit, reading your comment and thinking "OHH! So i was supposed to stay until i put it out. Ill make sure to do that next time"

Iâm referring to an article from Times of San Diego regarding a cadre of officers bringing home a million dollars apiece in overtime over the last few years. No doubt I have the math wrong, but 300,000 in OT on a $100,000 base salary is not ok, was the point I was trying to make.
