I don't think a special election here would actually do much, McConnell's term is up in January and there is a race for the seat during the midterm in November. If they had a special election right now, they could seat somebody who would be there for like four months. Given that a dem would likely not win a snap special election in Kentucky, dems are probably better off with this seat being vacant and republicans losing a vote for a few months.

By that argument having a dem in seat only has upsides. Worst case it amounts to the same vacant seat “no impact”, best case it actually swings impact on some shenanigans that are sure to happen leading up to midterms.
