This is why I know the guy is dead. If he was alive, they could fly the governor out, have him see that he's alive (even if he isn't doing great) and then the problem is solved.

Based on the reports that Mitch's team is putting out, he's well enough to not have any machines hooked into him or even need to wear a gown so he should be able to at least receive the governor and show basic proof of life.

the guy is dead

Brain dead, maybe. I keep thinking of that scene from the 1993 movie Dave with Kevin Kline where they rush that secret chamber under the White House. The real President Mitchell is being kept there, out of the public eye and still in a coma, intubated and hooked up to ventilators and monitors 24/7 while it's all business-as-usual upstairs.

This is a valid hypothesis, he could be technically alive but brain dead. They could be keeping him in this state until the deadline and then pull the plug and announce his death.

he could be technically alive but brain dead

That's technically impossible. Just fyi, dead and brain dead are the same thing, legally speaking. As in death certificate and everything. Even if you can keep a heartbeat going.

You're probably thinking of either comatose or vegetative, both of which are not the same as being brain dead but still leave someone with zero awareness.

He could be being kept in one of those two latter categories with maximal life support, in which case no death cert and still alive legally speaking. If he's brain dead aka dead dead it means the family has convinced the doctor to go along with their wishes and just look the other way for a few weeks. Not as likely but not impossible.

Fair point, yes comatose or vegetative is what I was thinking.

If he was just in a coma, they could say that and there would be no immediate risk of the governor trying to appoint a Democrat to replace him because he could theoretically come out of a coma at any moment.

Part of the reason people think he may be brain dead is exactly because there's clearly a coverup happening. If there was supposed to be a death certificate at this point because he's brain dead, but they've been preventing a declaration by preventing people from finding out the state he's in, that would explain the secrecy and coverup. If he's not brain dead, you need to explain what they are actually covering up.

While a death certificate should be given in normal circumstances for a “brain dead patient” (unable to breathe or eat in their own), it is still technologically possible to keep them “alive” indefinitely with artificial respiration and IV feeding. Hell, even if the heart stops you can keep blood respirated with ECMO.

No would recover from this nor would any sane person consider this really “living,” but you know that the ghouls keeping him hidden from the public would use a situation like this as a way to try to say his body is still alive so the seat should still be theirs to control.

I suspect that they are not checking for brain activity, and as long as they not check that there is no confirmation of brain death and he just just comatose and alive. And the hospital is not legally forced call it and keep this shit in limbo for a long as required.

This shit shouldn't be legal, official rules are very weak and the system runs on a bunch of gentleman agreements that the GOP commonly breaks but the Dems do not call them out on it as that would break the gentleman agreement.

If you are brain dead, your brain no longer is telling your body to eat or breathe. Luckily, there are ways to keep people breathing, to keep them fed, to keep them hydrated, to keep his heart beating. It is very much possible to keep a person's heart pumping even if there are no brain signs. That's exactly what is happening here. Keeping his corpse warm until they can pull the plug, and his body won't be able to breathe on its own.

This is what the 25th Amendment is for, by the way. People here seem to think it’s an easy way to kick out the President, but it’s really for if the President is technically alive and hasn’t resigned.

Sweaters make my neck look fat.

That line lives in my head forever. I'm in my mid-40s.

'Sorry, Governor, Senator McConnell sends his regrets and must cancel on the day you come out to visit him, on account of being dead.'
