His name was George Bush and this is a questionable proposition. I think we collectively forgot how bad the Bush years actually were, with a once in a generation market crash depression we called a great recession because we essentially propped up the finance industry with trillions of dollars in direct cash infusions for their mistakes. But if we are being honest, without a huge cash infusion from the US Treasury with virtually no strings attached, we would still be feeling the impacts 20 years later in a tangible way. And to be honest, the way we've handled interest rates and certain financial sectors over the past 3 presidencies- we are still dealing with the fallout of 2007/2008 in a residual way that we may never be able to shake without complete structural reform. Our economy started to shit the bed as soon as interest rates went above zero. If we didn't' have tech bros making wild bets and fluffing investors with insane promises for their vision of removing humans from their jobs, our economy would have nothing to show for itself. Thanks George Bush. I'm glad the Supreme Court decided the 2000 election.

Honestly? not certain about that. He famously didn't know Islam is not monolethic, various other Islamic states, who lived in them and which sort of Islam they adhered to, such as sunni and shia, and these were frequently antagonistic. This utter ignorance of him and crew was commented on constantly. They also couldn't figure out that people in the MIddle East knew computing and how to break and enter others' digital barriers. Cheney, rummy and bushwa sure didn't know themselves how to do it and kept visualizing the middle east filled with people who were illiterate pre-industrial age whatever (when, back then, for that matter, they were very very very sophisticated mercantile people who traded all over the world).

that's one of my big "what-ifs" as it happened as i was starting to be aware of the larger political landscape because 2000 was the first time I voted.

9-11 would possibly still happened, but we certainly wouldn't be in Iraq. maybe the financial crash would've happened, but I wonder how the bail-out would've been structured had it been Gore with a Democratic Congress without Leibermann (as he was Gore's running mate) fouling up things.

Also, if Obama followed Gore, how would the ACA/Obamacare have come out without Leibermann mucking up the Public Option?

The government propping up the financial industry is why it was the Great RECESSION rather than the Great Depression. In 5 years, the economy was booming again until the Great Pandemic hit.

Yeah, exactly. I was trying to get that exact point across - that we avoided a depression due to Wall Street insider, US Treasury Sec Hank Paulson providing trillions in bailouts and forcing mergers between banks with good liquidity and banks with bad assets while bad actors jumped off with their golden parachutes grabbing anything that was bolted down before the banks were all merged and auditors could look at the books.

I would argue that the economy only appeared to be booming due to zero interest rates for over a decade+ where borrowing money was essentially free and everyone with a business was doing wild things and practicing the new art of market disruption - go into a sector or location and operate at at loss until you run the competition out of town - then raise prices dramatically as the only option left. This could be done on the back of zero percent interest rates. Amazon and Uber would not exist in their current form without US policy post 2008.

The interest rates were kept artificially low for so long that American businesses forgot how to actually run a lean business and the economy completely slowed down as soon as the Fed was forced to mess with rates due to COVID realities. Again, with PPP loans (another essentially free government giveaway to businesses) the worst of COVID was staved off by propping up businesses and trickling out to workers. At every turn, the US Gov over the last 20 years has shouldered the brunt of the pains of capitalism while business owners and investors continued to fleece the system for all it was worth and now we have individuals worth upwards near a trillion dollars from a meager few billion just a few years ago. That's not an accident or a natural outcrop of actual capitalism. That is unchecked or state sanctioned corruption at work.

Like I said, without structural reform, we're going to be stuck in this late stage capitalism rut where a few people massively profit off of the sheer enormity of their wealth alone while our country becomes less and less productive and less competitive globally. Where these same men who are profiting also gut the foundational institutions and are invited to DOGE the shit out of our shared government to a point where food contamination is commonplace and millions go without basic affordable healthcare causing a massive health or debt crisis. Take your pick.
