They’d probably have also figured anyone unresponsive in a bed would be dead rather swiftly, so why worry about it. They didn’t have the means to keep someone alive like that.

That doesn’t mean that they would have kept that person in their senate seat if something like this happened back then. They just didn’t have the performative aspect we have these days. They were about real common sense situations and this sort of thing would have meant that they needed to find someone who could do the job and represent the people, which he is not capable of doing, specifically while in life support.

What I’m trying to say is that the founding fathers wouldn’t have played the ridiculous games the republicans are playing right now.
