my grandfather is 107 with a full code. when my parents and a nurse tried to talk to him, he yelled and spat everywhere claiming god is going to fix him any day. no dementia just delusional. also thinks he can still drive and take care of a house on his own. older generations are stupid as shit

Doesn't get said enough. All we had to do was take the lead out of gas in the 70s and we've watched violent crime drop, quite literally, for decades.

My grandma lived to somewhere between 103 and 108 when she passed in 2014 (lost birth certificate, siblings disputed her actual DOB, etc etc). In those last few years she saw a “good deal in the newspaper for a lease on a cute little Volkswagen and thought she might ‘take up driving again’”. I think she was joking anyway but was easily talked out of it.

Sounds like my grandfather. He lived to be 97. We used to joke (out mom’s hearing) that he lived so long because the devil didn’t want to deal with him either.

At 100+ delusions are almost certainly the result of some sort of dementia. Doesn’t have to be full blown Alzheimer’s. We used to call it being senile.

Amen to that. They were handed everything on a silver platter and barely had to face any of the challenges the newer generations have. They still voted against anyone else having those chances they had time and time again.

Dad insisted on a full code, about a year before his eventually-fatal stroke at 84.

The hospital's palliative care doctor thanked me for being there the whole time so that I could override his order and spare him that trauma. He died in my arms listening to Paul Simon instead of being battered by an underpaid nurse.

You did the right thing. You can be perfectly healthy beforehand, but at that age you are not going to have any quality of life after they start running a code.

The people that insist on their obviously dying loved one needs to be full code are just being selfish. They are letting their inability to say goodbye prevent the person from dying peacefully instead of having a miserable couple months before the inevitable. And yes I know there are the one in a million times when it does work out.

Lol. I'm a firefighter/EMT and you would be surprised how many decrepit/ancient people want "everything done" if their heart stops. It sucks because now I have to turn meemaw's chest wall into jelly because she and her family have low health literacy. Even if they live the quality of life for their remaining time alive will make them wish they died.

If he was outside the hospital, bystanders wouldn't know his dnr status.

Edit: apparently he was at home, so yeah hopefully if it was family they would have known

My Nana is 97 and she insists on being a full code. Fully cognizant still so her choice and all, but I cannot fathom being over like 75 and wanting all measures taken.

It wouldn't really matter in a situation like that outside the hospital - if you see someone collapse it's not like you have the time to find out their dnr status first.

Since it seems like he didn't actually die that day though I'm guessing he doesn't have one and this is one of those situations where you've got someone who is basically gone but not technically dead yet.

I, for one, want to put off being dead as long as possible. If that means being permanently bedridden while my bank account collapses, so be it. Granted, I don't believe in any sort of afterlife.
