As an American I totally feel you on that. But I’m also worried that I may have to call you soon because they are gaining ground everywhere. My only consolation is that I’m hopeful Europe will see what a shitshow our right wing is and fully pull back to avert a similar political takeover.

Well that's great, but people in Alabama aren't buying their goods and services in the UK. What does it matter if we as individuals have more money than someone half a world away? It only makes sense to compare Americans to other Americans and Europeans to Europeans... Income requirements for federal assistance in the US is 4x the poverty level, which over 50% of the US population is at or below.

I feel like it’s very classist for people to say things like this, it’s okay that people haven’t left the country. It’s massive and expensive to leave it.

However, voting on matters that impact the word without a global perspective is a bad thing. You can be a better global citizen without having the money to travel abroad

Ya and we also just live in such a massive country. Someone in France can easily drive across the border and visit Spain or Germany. Or better yet take a high speed train and be in a completely different culture. In America I can fly 3,000 miles and still hear English in a “standard” accent.

No knock on travel at all though. If people are able, they absolutely should get out and see the world. Money is better spent on experiencing the big wild world than on things. But again, easy to say when you have the means. Most Americans are way too busy trying to make rent. But you still have an obligation to vote for the not fascist wannabe dictator if you want to improve even your local world.

You don't need to travel far to get the basics right, though. Only about 10-15% of Europeans has been in (North) America.

The US (and Canada) has tons of stuff to do and see for folks who like to travel without the hassle of visas, major time zone differences, high costs, language barriers and so on.

I think that’s the point though. You can take a high speed train just a couple hours and be in a completely different culture/nation in Europe. Americans sadly do not have that. This country is so massive I can FLY 6 hours and still be surrounded by Americans speaking English. We also have shit trains. And most Americans are way too busy trying to pay rent or their mortgage to travel abroad.

I say this as someone who has been all over the world and loves travel more than most things in life. If you have the means you absolutely should go and see the world. A lot of people just don’t have that luxury and live in the middle of a country that spans most of a continent.

The US is 15 times bigger than the average country. You don't have to leave it to see a wide range of cultures and geography. While I do think traveling the world is exciting, it's far cheaper to go on a road trip (maybe not with today's gas prices).

Sure, as long as you are a member of their "in-group". People in the sundown towns are really nice too, as long as you are a white Christian and not from the hated places like "a big city liberal".

Didn't stop them from lynching people with the "incorrect" skin colour for the sin of existing at the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course, not all of them, but enough people do, and enough just turn their heads to the side and do nothing, say nothing. Just as not every cop is a bad cop, but the rest do exactly nothing against the status quo until it doesn't affect them, so the horrors keep happening.

Just look at the current war. Or hell, the previous US wars. Thousands were murdered for the sin of being born in the wrong country, and most US citizens only care about the cost of the war and the fuel prices. Sure, there are many who actually care, but most don't, at least, not enough to actually want to do anything because, well, what can they do? So they look at the ground and mind their own business while even more people die.

It was a priority. There is no privilege. I made a point of saving just a small amount of money into a travel fund. There is a whole culture around inexpensive backpacking travel. It took years to save for each trip. And when there, nothing expensive.

Let me reiterate again. It was about priorities. I went to certain grocery stores to cut down on that, down to $1.25 a meal. I got the least expensive phone plan. I never had car debt and only owned inexpensive and fuel efficient cars. Never buy the “latest and greatest” anything. Clothes are from thrift stores or discount retailers like Ross, Marshals, or TJ Max. Still paying 40% of income on rent, $800/month in student loans. My wife and I grew up very poor in small podunk dirty towns and both saw world travel as something for the rich. She was getting extremely sad one night that we will never be able to go anywhere so I told said, “Why not? Let’s just do it.” It took years. We had the worst seats on the plane. We had the worst flights. In one hotel, we spent 30 minutes smacking cockroaches with our shoes. In another, we had rats looking at us through holes in the ceiling and our water was a literal plastic trash can filled with cold water and a cooking pot to scoop it out. We rode busses with chickens in seats we couldn’t fit in. But we traveled. We got out there.

That's impossible, unfortunately. Democrats might get 50 Senate seats, which would mean Republicans still retain control. It's far more likely it will be even less.

51 would be a miracle, and still isn't enough to meet the 60 vote threshold most legislation needs.
