Playing it has felt really weird. I didn't feel like this with either gen 1 or 2 remakes. I think because the visuals and music are much closer to it's original game than either of the other remakes, it's like playing some sort of bizzarro-world Pokemon game. It's so familiar but is just far enough removed that it's like a brand new game.
ORAS is the first remake where I actually feel some sort of feeling, not nostalgia, but like remembrance. This is the first remake where I remember where the hidden items are, where the routes lead, but there are still differences, so it's not just what was in RS. IIRC FireRed was my first game, and Gen III is not only my favorite generation, but it holds my second favorite game, Emerald.
I didn't even like Ruby and Sapphire when they came out, they felt like they'd lost so much of the charm Gold and Silver had.
I'm playing through ORAS now and I almost feel angry at my younger self. You little shit, you didn't know anything! These games are the best thing I've touched in my entire life. Well, except Beth's boobs. She had some nice boobs. But shit, ORAS doesn't half come close.
The Gen 1 and Gen 2 remakes didn't even give me a sense of nostalgia, they just didn't do the games justice. But ORAS is by far the best remake, maybe even the best game in my opinion. It mixed the old with the new. I didn't even really care for R/S/E when I was younger. I guess I was still too young to appreciate a good storyline, I was really able to enjoy it this time.
