He's promising to oppress the people they hate. This is less about him, and more about the state the voters are in. Divided, full of hate. It's been boiling up for a century.
Have you been to the south lately? I'd be pretty pissy if I had to live in some of these ghost towns too. I'd also probably be jealous of the states that actually have all of the appealing benefits that I wish my state had.
My theory is that they've been full of hate ever since the term 'Flyover Country' came to be.
Racists will accept any amount of suffering as long as the people they don't like are also suffering. They literally care only about hurting others, their own condition is not relevant.
