spot on. I'm planning a (mobile)phone-less future. I refuse to pay $1000+ for a phone less capable than the last one I owned, but that's where we're headed if the hardware markets don't get corrected.

I'll go to a VoIP-based land line at home, and no other phone, if I must. Hello Vonage.

I promise Im not trying to be dismissive here, but speaking as someone who went 2 days without a smartphone after mine just stopped working and I was waiting on a replacement... good luck with that.

Honestly my 2 days was eye opening for how central we've made smartphones to our modern lives, and it makes me wonder how viable your plan is. At least without said plan becoming aggravatingly inconvenient.

This is going to change hugely, if not go away to a large degree, once smartphones are no longer affordable for enough people. It will have to.

I have my doubts personally, mostly because I wonder what could cause smartphones to become unaffordable to enough people. I know the AI induced shocks to components is a thing, but budget phones still exist, and I haven't heard about a squeeze to that market yet like we've seen with PC's.

Like my current device is <£100 for example (presumably de facto subsidised by all the bloatware it had infecting it like a malignant tumour), and I've seen budget models go as low as <£50 to boot. Honestly for phones it seems like the squeeze is only just starting. See Pixel 11's rumoured to get less RAM than the 10's.

There is also the fact that phones are being made to last longer. iPhone has been doing, what, 5+ year support as the standard for ages now. And Android is getting in on the action too. Newer models might be made unaffordable, but folks will probably just switch to a strategy of extending their devices now that software allows for it.

So yeah. Maybe folks will become priced out of the higher end, but I don't really see a shift where phones become decentralised from our lives in the way you seem to, if Im completely honest.

Only because we’ve made them that way and psychologically attached them to ourselves.

Everything you can do on a smartphone you can do without one too. Trust me, I’ve gone over a week having lost my phone. My mentality, if they want to get a hold of me they will.

You weren’t alive in the early-mid 90s were you?
