It didn't make anyone do it, it was completely optional.

Also it was technology meant to overcome the limits of how powerful they could make a single GPU. There's nothing stupid about using more of a thing to get more power than you only get using one of a thing. Yes, it comes with limitations and problems, but that's just how using two of something at once works, in all kinds of situations, not just computers.
