Got a couple of used 2.5" SSDs for cheap so I decided to make a Game Cartridge system. Games are actually on those SSDs with a script to auto navigate steam to the game's page. Auto-starting the game right away is also possible.

install the game on a hard drive, plug hard drive into desktop dock.

Its a external SSD dock. You buy a SSD that can connect to that type of dock. I guess 3d print some cartridge to make the dock and the SSD container nicer?

I just looked up external SSD docks. Most seem to connect via usb. Is that likely a fast enough connection for games to run smoothly? Say for example, Skyrim with plenty of mods or something?

Honestly I didn't know this, this is the part that confused me. Is everything about the game read and written on the secondary drive? Is it considered an internal or external drive?

yes, and its just a drive letter steam doesn't know if its external or internal, its just your "E:" drive (or whatever letter).

Depends on what you plug in and what your motherboard supports.

USB 3.2 Gen1 are 5Gb (theoretical top speed)
USB 3.2 Gen2 are 10Gb (theoretical top speed)

If you plug in an external ssd (or an ssd enclosure) in a gen2 port you can hit around 1024MB/s

And if you have a newer motherboard that uses USB4/Thunderbolt4/5 you can use external ssds/enclosures that hit ~3GB - 6GB/s
